Mai's Cell

User Image

Pillows- Thus far she has been unsuccessful in finding a bed, so she opts to use pillows as her bedding. Though even if she came across a bed, she probably wouldn't make a move to claim it; her guilt tends to prevent her from giving herself things she feels that she doesn't deserve, seeing her squalor as a sort of penance.
Utensils- She has managed to find a chipped plate and a leaky cup, but since she seldom eats, it is more for decoration that anything else; a sad, feeble attempt to make the damp, chilly sell more homelike.
Toys- Convinced somehow that her dead son Georgie is hiding abroad in the asylum, she has attempted to call him to her with a few toys she has managed to find, cleaning them up as best she could and leaving them out in the hopes that her little boy will come and play with the toys and thus they will be reunited.
Pictures- As with the plate and cup, the pictures are little more than faded clippings from magazines and newspapers fitted into makeshift frames, and serve as another attempt to make the cell look more like the cozy home that is lost to her forever.

Everything's Lost

--Tape extracted from the file of one Mai Candell--

I know we don't generally do this sort of thing, gathering a patient's life story in an actual humane way, but with a subject this docile and eager, I see no need to extract it by any of the usual methods. It's always good to have as much information as possible on each patient for various reasons, though I think this one will cause very little trouble. She is young, not more than 25 I'm certain, and all that she has is her dress, which in the few days of her being here she hasn't even bothered to find water to clean the spatters of mud off of it. Her hands are still grimy, and it's even caking on the ends of her hair. She'd be a knockout if she'd just clean herself up. Her eyes are especially captivating, but so vacant and lost that I wonder if she would even notice if I lapse in my act as a concerned health care professional. Even now as she sits across the table from me, she seems to stare past me, her hands clasped neatly as though she's at a social gathering instead of an interrogation room. Weirdo.

Tell us about your life before, Miss Candell.

Well, up until I was married, there was never much to tell. I was a typical girl living a typical life. I had friends and a family who loved me, and I did well in school, but nothing to brag about. I was so average, but that was alright. Right now I would give anything to be average again.

And why is that?

Because all of this...... (she gestures vaguely) doesn't happen to average people. They don't lose everything they have and end up in a strange place with nobody they know.......sir please, can you bring my son in here? This place is sure to frighten him.

(Ignoring the question) Was yours a happy marriage?
