Mawu had to tell him. After the brief talk with her queen, she knew it was her place as a slave and a mother, to tell the father. She headed straight to where she knew he was, her lilac eyes half lidded in her fear. She was afraid of many things. Of losing her closest friend in her new home. Being abandoned by him... like her former mate had. She felt a surge of anxiety flow up her spine, and she stopped to pant and to look frankly freaked out.
She stood up, sighing and lifted her head proudly. She padded towards where he should be and called to him. "Uli!" Her voice was slightly shaking.

Ulivuma had had a very upsetting conversation with his father and he was in complete denial. His parents had jobs to do but they were also very observant and used the opportunities offered by being available to the whole pride to keep up with what was going on .. probably an old habit of his father's, actually..
Denial or not, he was anxious. He was pacing, he didn't know what else to do. It wouldn't do to go ask such strange and possibly random questions to Mawu. His heart skipped a bear when he heard her shaky voice calling out to him.
Did that mean his father was right?
He stopped pacing, looked around and once he spotted her, he headed towards her. Immediately noticing she didn't look pregnant to him- but was that the denial? Maybe he just didn't know what it looked like. What had Indu looked like? Much larger than that, definitely.
"Mawu," he said, putting valiant effort into smiling.

Mawu spotted him and went straight to him, her eyes watering. "Uli!" She practically sobbed, hot tears running down her cheeks. She was so sorry... She went to him and stopped, not sure if a proper greeting was in order. No... this wasn't a proper meeting. She opened her mouth, shut it. Opened it. "Uli... I am sure you have heard the rumors..." She said, looking down at the ground.
"They aren't rumors..." She added, looking up at him. "I talked to the queen... She told me what to do... and I am doing it..." She paused. "You're the father... I am sure of it..."
That was a lot to just come out with...

Seeing Mawu so distressed did something to him, he felt a different rush of panic. She was so upset, he couldn't be upset, that would make her more upset- he didn't want that. Before he could think of anything reassuring to say, she spit everything out-- and it didn't make it any easier to think of what to say. But he had to say something, he needed to reassure her.
"What- what did she tell you that has you this upset? Mawu, it's OK, it'll be just fine!"
It was a start.

Mawu sniffled and shook her head. "She was... very kind to me... she didn't make me upset..." She looked at him quietly for a moment, before saying softly. "Onalim's father left me... after I had his children. I am afraid that-" She choked.
"-That you will too..." She lowered her head and sniffled lightly, her gloved paws tucking under her chest as she lay down, nose too the ground. "I just don't want you to hate me... because now we have to get married..." She said softly.

Uli had an uncertain opinion of Alcmene, she seemed to be a perfectly find queen by all accounts but it was tainted by the fact that she was his sister and she refused to acknowledge them. Her speaking to Mawu about this was the most acknowledgment he'd ever gotten from her, so he figured anyway.
He opened his mouth to speak when she explained about Onalim's father. He hadn't known the details, it hadn't seemed appropriate to ask about it. It certainly would make this that much scarier.
"I don't hate you, Mawu, this isn't your fault," he said seriously. When she laid down, he sat down before her, put a paw on hers and nudged her gently with his nose.
"We don't have to do anything," he said, "I want to marry you. If- if you want to marry me, I mean."

Mawu looked down at her paws sadly, for certain that his words would be so like Vestips, full of excuses and lies... but what came from the male surprised her and she looked up at him. "What?"
She looked a bit taken back, her eyes wide. "Uli... really? You WANT to marry me?" She asked, looking at his paw with a small smile. "You really mean it? I mean.. of course I do... I really do like you uli.... " She said with a soft look in her lilac eyes.

"Of course! This didn't happen because I don't like you," he said, smiling at her, though not perfectly calm himself- this was a lot to deal with, however certain he was about what he wanted to do about it.
"So that's that," he said after a moment's pause where he gazed back at her, "We'll get married and everything will be just fine. We're going to be parents!"
It was such a strange statement, now he said it. So strange..
"Well, maybe not the first time for you but you know, it's still exciting, right?"
He was going to be a father. This was why his dad looked so smug when Uli had been trying to comprehend the rumors being passed along to him.

Mawu felt a bit of uneasy at first, memories of her past litter fluttering through her mind but his words reassured her. She smiled softly, looking up at him with her lilac eyes soft and serene. "Oh Uli... really?" She said with such happiness in her voice. She bobbed her head lightly, looking at her paw touching hers.. and it made her smile.
"I would really love to be married... and I am happy.. that you are not upset with me... I just-felt... like... I was going to make you hate me... because of what happened with your parents... So I wasn't sure. " She said, looking a bit sad now. "I just.. don't want to loose my best friend in this new pride of mine... I just care for you..."

Uli kept smiling at her, not taking his eyes away though his mind was stumbling through all of the information he was trying to process at that exact moment.
"Ah, right," he said, realizing for the first time the parallel between him and his father now and he could just imagine how one of his brother's would react.. but this wasn't about his siblings and he'd obviously have his parents' blessing. Dad hadn't been scolding him, he'd been smiling stupidly while encouraging him to go find Mawu.
"We'll always be best friends," he said confidently.

Mawu smiled widley at him, her heart fluttering. Though deep inside she felt that feeling lingering in the back of her mind.. the feeling she had when Vestip came and told her he was leaving and that he didn't love her anymore. She ignored it though, because the light in Uli's eyes made her smile. He made her smile.
She giggled lightly. "I am excited though. I... I love children. I am very excited... for this... and I am happy they are... yours..." She said softly, putting a paw on her belly and looking at it for a moment. "Oh Onalim is going to be jealous... she hasn't had any luck finding a boy here... she's going to tease me forever..." She said with a laugh.

"I've never really seen many kids but this is still exciting," he said, grinning widely. He really hadn't been around a bunch of cubs since he was one.. but that didn't matter.
"You'll make sure I don't mess them up, right?" he beamed. It would be fine, she had done this before and his parents had done it three times before, surely he'd have no problem finding help if he needed it.
"Does Onalim know yet? Should we go tell her?"

Mawu smiled. To her, this litter was a new life and a new start. Her past children would always mean something to her but... this was a new new start. These cubs meant so many things to her, including the start of a new life with him. She chuckled. "I had a large family back... in my other pride... so I am very used to children.... It isn't hard.. even when they are your own babies."
She wrinkled her nose at him. "Mess them up? Oh you silly. They will never be messed up... even if you tried. There is nothing that can mess this up." She said, leaning against him softly. "This is a blessing..."
She lifted her gaze. "No... I came straight here. Lets go tell her... together?" She stood up and waited for him to come.

Uli was content and quiet for a moment longer, even when Mawu got to her feet and waited for him to join her so they could go and tell Onalim. It was exciting. A bit nerve-wracking but manageable. As long as he and Mawu were together, it would be wonderful.
"OK," he said finally, pushing himself up and over to her side, "Let's go find Onalim."
Fin!
