User ImageUser ImageA warm sunny day, just after noon and not a cloud in the sky. Maybe a little too warm, but the shade of trees and cool breeze off the lake help. Which is just where Spiral and Walks can be found, napping off the early lunch they'd had.

Walks twitches his ear, dislodging the fly that'd landed on it. That slight tickle wakes him enough that the tap tap tapping of a woodpecker penetrates his sleep fogged mind. He opens his eyes, blinks and looks around for the bird. It doesn't take long for Walks to spot it, the woodpecker is hammering away at the same tree he and Spiral are under.

Walks roll onto his belly, but stays put and watches the bird. After the rabbit, he'd never again attempt to tame an animal. But it won't stop him from watching them. Small critters are such fun to observe. Especially on days like today, when all you wanna do is lounge about.

Beside him, Spiral stirs. The same pecking that had woken Walks is working on her. Spiral is slow to come around, though. With much stretching and yawning before she even half opens her eyes. Still laid out, and halfway between sleep and awake, she listens to the noises around her. 'What is it?' she asks, only it comes out as: "Mrmph it?" Spiral doesn't bother trying to speak again, she simply lays there allowing her mind to power up.

((I don't RP 2 characters spectacularly at once, but Imma give it a try.))

The pink and green ponies were not the only ones that heard the blasted woodpecker. Mephe hadn't been napping, no, but did that lessen his irritation when the repetitive tatta-tatta-tat-tat echoed against the tree trunk?

Considering his already fuming state, no.. his irritation was just as bad now as if he had been roused by the bird.

The red, horned pony went charging full-throttle towards the source of the sound. He galloped in between trees (that housed birds who seemed more than capable of behaving themselves!), over roots, around large rocks, until the sound was seemingly right in front of him.

Narrowed eyes stared at the tree and his head lowered. With his curled horns facing forward, Mephe moved much like an angry, battling ram would -- he went head first into the tree, screeching in his anger in between bumps to the trunk with his horns.

"Would. you. STOP. THIS. INFERNAL. RACKET. YOU HORRIBLY UGLY BIRD."

Sounds like a sweetie, don't he?

User ImageUser ImageThe woodpecker wasn't there anymore, in fact had flapped off the minute he saw a charging figure. Now he perched in another tree, watching the red pony. Or maybe just considering what tree to drill more holes in.

Like the bird, Walks heard Mephe before he saw the other pony. In one motion Walks rolls out of the way and pulls himself up. He doesn't say anything until the pony stops screaming. Then he clears his throat. "He's just doing what nature intended." he shrugs, more upset about the yelling and head butting then why Mephe did it. "Woulda been easier just kick the tree, both on your head and the tree."

The racket, much more disturbing then the bird's pecking, isn't lost on Spiral either. Snapping awake she pulls to her feet, glaring at the red pony. "And your making more of a ruckus then a flock of woodpeckers." Spiral overruns Walks' last sentience, making both hard to understand. "Anyway, I'm Spiral and this is Walks." about now is when she notices the red pony's horns. Attention immediately snagged, she can't help but stare. Even knowing it's rude, the addition of atypical bits always fascinates her.

Yes, indeed, to any other pony.. perhaps it would have seemed wise to simply kick at the tree trunk a little. Maybe pick up a branch and tap right back at the pesky woodpecker. Even running in circles around the tree's roots was, obviously, enough to get the little creature's wings to flutter away.

But that was not how Mephe's mind worked. The most insignificant things seemed to tip him off. Perhaps he was overcompensating for his smaller stature with big angry reactions, after all even as a fully grown stallion he appeared more like that of a colt instead, but whatever the reasoning... when Mephe was annoyed, he was sure to make it known.

His head cocked to peer with daggers in his eyes up into the boughs of the tree, making sure the feathered pest was gone. But it was only then that he noticed the other two ponies in close proximity, regarding them with the same disdain as the woodpecker had received.

"It stopped pecking, didn't it?" came his curt reply. A puff of air was exhaled through his nostrils, causing them to flare in a snuffled snort.

Spiral gives a snort of her own, one sounding rather amused. "Yes, but doesn't your head hurt? Or is your skull thicker? To support those lovely horns." Her tone makes two things clear; 1) thick headed, in this case, is not an insult and 2) Spiral has no proof that horns equal thicker skulls, but she's convinced herself that it is a fact.

Walks just sighs, Spiral noticed the horns. Of course she would. Next she'd realize the other pony was full grown but smaller then normal. Even more reason for her to fawn over him. This irritated Walks more then the red pony charging in and messing up a great lazy day. In fact, Walks - though he'd never admit to it - was jealous. Spiral was his best friend, and she was a good friend, but he wouldn't be able to get her to ooze over him because he was normal.

As if... right on cue, in a delayed sort of way, a dull throbbing pounded inside Mephe's skull. In the same spot, wouldn't ya know, where he'd rammed his forehead against the trunk of the tree in anger. It felt like a festering headache, that grew exponentially right behind his eyes, and both green orbs squinted further behind his eyelids.

That was the only indication he gave that he was in pain, however.

Mephe's gaze, though marginally hazed in pain, shifted from peering at both the pink and green ponies to fixating on the green half of the pair instead. Spiral, was that what she said her name was? It didn't matter in the least, honestly, but somewhere in his brain he made note of it.

"Of course it doesn't hurt. Why would I do it if it hurt? Do you think I'm stupid?" he nearly spat at her, even if he was lying. "My horns are not loo~oooo~oooovely either," he mocked. Silly girl, 'lovely' horns! Ffft. "They are deadly." Mephe couldn't exactly substantiate his claim that they were deadly, but ... they could be. Potentially.

This attack on his friend pulls Walks from his thoughts. "They can be both, can't they?" he asks, trying to be the peace keeper. Spiral typically ignores such behavior, but 'abnormal' or not he'd already done enough that Spiral just might take offense. And the last thing Walks wanted to witness was either of the other ponies testing their horns out.

Again Spiral snorts, this one full of irritation. "Of course they can be both, Walks dear. Just because they are lovely, splendid in fact, does not make a pair of horns any less deadly." This is said with more then a touch of pride and arrogance, making it clear she was including both Mephe's and her own horns as pretty but dangerous.

Aha!

Score, Mephe 1 .... Pinky and his green friend, 0.

While it hadn't been his original intent, annoying the dragon-esque pony had been such a lovely side effect. Her arrogant reply elicited a proud and smug smirk from the smaller male, playing to his horned, devilishly red appearance.

"No, they can't be both," he argued, in a matter-of-fact tone of voice. For no other reason than to simply be difficult. "If, for example... I'd stabbed the woodpecker with my horns..." And his still-throbbing head craned, searching for the damned little bird in the trees. "..I doubt very much he'd think I'm lovely."

Seemed logical enough to Mephe. "You're welcome to think your own are, though. They can be pretty if they're just for decoration."

Walks takes up Spiral's thought process, arguing with Mephe. "The bird wouldn't think they're lovely. But it wouldn't change the fact that someone would think that." He tilts his head at Spiral. "I mean Spiral can't be the only one who thinks non-pony additions to one's appearance are lovely." Said with as much political correctness as one can muster when your basically saying someone is abnormal.

Spiral nods at both stallions. "Yes, mine are lovely. And functional." In theory at least, she adds silently. "Very durable and sharp. But even with a bird impaled on them they'd have potential to be pretty. After they were cleaned up again. Anyway.." she looks around, trying to find something to change topics. "Oh. Hungry? The fruit is ripe and there's plenty for a whole herd."

Mephe didn't need to be told, politically correct or not, that he was abnormal. He knew quite well that he was. Just standing, very still, in his own pasture made it painfully clear. Even the most effeminate of the male ponies in his pasture made Mephe look shrimpy. Oh, what a cruel hand he'd been dealt!

Though he wasn't alone in odd adornments, at least. He'd seen two ponies in his own pasture with wings, one with a single horn rather than two, and even a pony who was decked out in living pink roses (poor thing.. to be covered with that).

Still, he knew he was odd. If for no other reason than for his personality alone!

"Non-pony?" he asked of the pink and gold male. "If one were to talk about non-pony additions...." His head purposely pointed right at the green half of the duo, even if the movement caused him to wince slightly. If Mephe had ever seen any creature that could define non-pony, Spiral was it.

But the abrupt change in topic irked him slightly, he wasn't yet finished arguing his point. It was far too amusing trying to frustrate the two of them, especially now that he knew that he could. This mention of food... while he certainly wasn't civil, he would allow this subject. For now.

"Fruit." Then he remembered why he was even amidst the trees to begin with. Anger, again, at the bird bubbled to the surface -- but this time, for interrupting his original train of thought. "I was already on my way to eat," he replied, with clenched teeth. "Until that stupid bird got in the way."

"Why you sheep horned litt-"

Spiral cuts off her friend with a sharp look and a stomp of her hoof. "That enough, Walks. You opened that can of worms all on your own. And anyway, I rather like being different." she states mater of factly. Spiral smiles at his mention of eating, and ignores his comment about the bird. Arguing the bird's intelligence would be a waste, since this pony seemed to be both stubborn and grouchy.

"Well, then, if you wouldn't mind the company we could go together." she offers, not even sure herself which answer she wants. Spiral tries to see the good in everyone, but grouchy ponies do irritate her a bit. But still, even some of the most irritating ponies can become good friends.

Perhaps if Mephe hadn't been so distracted by inwardly damning the woodpecker and it's penchant for.. pecking wood, then he most definitely would have been smirking. Wide and smug and as self-indulgent as he possibly could, just for getting a rise out of the pink and gold male. Interrupted insult or not, it would have actually pleased him to get such a reaction!

Meant he was doing something right.

But as it was, he was still searching through the trees for sight of the little feathered bugger. Unsure of what he'd do if he saw it (maybe another round of head-butting the tree trunk?), he looked for it nevertheless. It might have seemed as if he was ignoring Spiral's statements, for Mephe was purposely silent and looking in the opposite direction for a long moment...

..but eventually, he found the motivation to reply verbally.

"Nnh.." Such a loaded question, if he'd mind the company. Did he really seem the type to want to go together? "There's nothing stopping you from coming with me." Ah, as if it had been his own idea all along! "As long as you don't touch the apples."

"Why? Surely there are enough apples for everyone?" Spiral shrugs and walks off, not curious enough to stay for the answer. She didn't even want apples. Not today, at least. Today she wanted oranges. Or maybe limes. "Or both." She says out loud. "Mmhm, oranges and limes today." She turns and looks back at Mephe. "So, you coming? Walks and I can't tag along if you don't go first." She says in a teasing manner, irritation washed away with the thought of her favorite fruits.

Walks is quiet through all of this. Licking his bruised ego, or some such other bit of pouting. All he wanted to do was defend Spiral, his best friend. Well, okay, maybe insults were not the best way to show his anger. But the other pony didn't seem to mind them. Then again, Walks didn't know that before he started his barrage. And maybe they bothered Spiral more. She's always liked her own oddities, but maybe she'd met others who didn't...

On and on. Around and around. These thoughts swim through his mind. Blocking all else out to the point that Walks doesn't see Spiral head off.

Just as Spiral favored limes (so sour!) and oranges, Mephe preferred apples. Bright, firm red apples. The color appealed to him (wonder why?) and they were just sweet enough to satiate a slight sweet tooth, but not so sugary they threatened to decay his teeth. Plus, they had the most satisfying crunch! What could be better than gnashing apples when one is perturbed?

Looking at Spiral as if she'd questioned some unwritten rule, Mephe cocked his head a bit to one side. Clearly, he'd just staked claim to the apples -- it didn't matter if there was enough for everyone to share! "I want the apples," was all he said in explanation.

But the invitation, if it was indeed an invitation, to go on while they followed was... accepted by Mephe. And even if he would have liked to kick a rock or two at the woodpecker that had so rudely interrupted him in the first place, he stepped around Walks purposely. Putting himself between the pink male and his green friend, before nodding towards the fruit trees.

"No distractions this time," he went on, in a relatively civil tone, but spoke more to himself. And his legs moved in the direction he pointed out, being the one to follow instead, stepping in stride behind Spiral's left flank.

Spirasl nods at Mephe's claim, turning to look back at her friend. "You hear that, Walks? No apples today." she says in a gentle tone, already knowing this would be an upset to her pink friend. Spiral just hopes Walks will at the least be an adult about this. Even if it's childish of Mephe to make such a demand.

Truth be told, Mephe is the first pony outside their own pasture that either has met. That in it's self means Spiral will be more accommodating, you can't learn about others if they don't stick around. And sometimes to get them to stay you need to bend a bit. So long as you aren't the only one bending.

Walks snaps out of his thoughts when Mephe brushes past him. His mind clears just in time to see the other stallion take his, Walks', own normal spot beside Spiral. And to top it off, Spiral is saying something about no apples. It seems this new pony has laid a claim on them.

Grumbling under his breath - it's just not fair! - Walks hurries to catch up. Taking up the spot on Spiral's left, Walks shoots a glare at Mephe, full of irritation as much as dislike for the smaller male. Walks hated to admit it, if even only to himself, but if this was how Mephe always is, maybe Walks doesn't want to be friends.
