When your room was a small island with a good few feet of water, and you had bird like tendencies to go take a bath, (and with Israfel's OCD need to be clean and have all his feathers shimmering), he didn't notice his newest companion until much much later in the day. And by much later in the day, that was after class.
It had been on the inside of his wing, hidden by long blue hair and a mass of fluffy down feathers. When it wiggled it's way to Israfel's shoulder, the Siren let out a very girlish shriek and stumble. Of course, the little thing just slithered up to his cheek and did what the siren could only describe as 'cuddle'. It was cute, in a blood sucking kind of way.
Still, leeches wen't supposed to be wandering about, and Israfel did recall another monster, a kelpi perhaps, down the hall who had such a pet prone to escape. Thinking it was the self same leech, Israfel picked the little guy up and made his way to the Kelpi's room. "Hello? Uh, I think I might have something that belongs to you." The leech seemed to not mind being handled and almost seemed happy to snuggle into Israfel's arms.
Good thing it had already fed.

It wasn't the first person that had come to his door saying they found one of his leeches. It was just the darnest thing. It seemed that the big jar of leeches he brought with him from home had found the campus to be a new and lovely place. Ever the adventurous opportunists, they were slowly slipping out from his room to seek out new friends. Calder didn't know what part of him was offended the most. The fact they were running off to find other company other than him or that they were being better at making friends that he had been.
There was just one leech he would not give up, and that one was currently perched on his head, chewing slowly on his ear while the kelpie worked. Door ajar (which probably didn't help with keeping the leeches inside in the first place), one could take in Calder's room. What furniture he had was water soaked and swollen and now, thanks to some wild school supplies, dotted with staples and scissor marks. A few potted plants were basking in the glow of his small window as the ground dorms didn't get the bigger windows. While he had been placed in the basement dorms to allow water to be filled inside, only half of his room was wet, and this was only because of a large, rusted bathtub sitting against the wall. His bed, and filled with water, the home of the leeches he looked after. He never did mind sharing.
Moss covered the floor, the claws of the tub, and his furniture as it slowly changed to wooden floorboards. Among this were a few heavy chests and weaved baskets where he kept his things. It was the center, however, that Calder sat, sitting on the floor and sewing up a tattered jacket that his sinister scissors had torn up.
The knock caused him to perk, and pulling a needle from between his lips, he called out. "Come in." What he saw was a boy that he instantly knew his father would love. Manicured good looks and, even with Calder's limited knowledge of what was hip, fashionable clothes came walking into his room, looking startling against the dark greens and grays around him. Simply gorgeous, and the shimmering blue wings made him want to light a candle to watch the light play on them. Now why would anyone like him be he-…
He noticed the leech. "Oh! Hhhhiiii there." Calder set his things aide and walked over, smiling and giving a small wave to the little leech. "Look who made a widdle friend." He sang, looking up to the other teen. "I was wondering where he ran off too. Glad to see he's safe and sound. You've been taking really good care of him." He noticed the leech snuggling the bird boy's hand and smiled. "Aww."

Israfel immedietly liked this boy's room. A bit swampy for a siren, but it was more definitely aquatic, and Israfel knew that any monster of the sea was going to a friend indeed. And swamps flowed into seas, so it was close enough. Water was water after all! The only prblem the Siren had was the lack of color. Natural was all well and good but color! Color was how you attracted humans! That or shiny things. Humans and shinnies. he'd never understood that fact. Stepping in The siren paused as the moss let out a light 'squish' from all the moisture. He briefly wondered what it would feel like under his talons. Mossy trees could be very comfy. Maybe moss floors were the same? Quirking his head to the side, Israfel took in the student now, his assessment of the room over and done with. Not large like some, but who was to say the boy's true form wasn't a giant white goat, (that might be a problem. Apparently there was a chupacabra on campus).
"I found him hiding in my feathers and hair just a while ago. Didn't even notice the lil guy." Ear feathers fluffed a bit. "I heard you had a pet leech that sometimes wanders off, so I figured I'd bring him back here. I didn't want to worry about him and some of my companions if I just left him in my room. They might mistake him as a grub. Birds you know. Well, not the Kappa. Cracker only eats the rose bushes." As his shoulders shrugged his back wings fanned Calder's hair, exposing a twig. Israfel removed it without a thought.
"I'd hate for him to get hurt, and I couldn't just let him run loose! You know how some monsters are." The leech had started sucking on his arm. Israfel didn't notice until he looked at it. Ah, the magic of anti-coagulants. It was kind of cute, eating at his arm, no wonder this white haired boy kept a leech for a pet. It certain matched the swampy decor!

His shoulders hitched as the wings flew up and brushed his hair, noting how soft and light the feathers breezed past him, and watched as a stick unraveled from his silken-white hair. It was such a simple little act but he continued to stare at the wings with renewed fascination and awe as Israfel talked, almost loosing Calder entirely for the moment. His mouth was still half open and eyes fixed on the wings, glimmering with a radiate shine, by the time he finished, and he gave a few short nods that he was listening before noticing he stopped talking.
The pressure to respond jerked him to look up. "Oh, leeches are very reliant and smart. I have a stapler that tried to go after Fester just the other day and he just went into the water and swam off." He made a gesture with his hand of little ripples, a invisible version of a leech sailing by.
"OH! That's what you need! A safe place for your friend. Well that's simple enough." He turned about, tapping his finger on his pale lower lip before darting over to his chest. Opening the heavy lid, he started to move books and various junk before pulling out a jar of smoked frog legs. Looking around for a cloth, he poured the legs out on the fabric, wrapped them, and set them on top of his dresser. Darting over, he dunked the jar into his bathtub, the water gurgling before Calder walked over and presented a jar of murky water, the kelpie's hand, sleeve, and the jar completely wet. "Here! He can live in there. The birds won't get in there. If you want, you can put a cap on it with little holes, but he'd like it better if he could move about. Fester's friends really like to go around places."
Not waiting, he took Israfel's hand and set the wet jar of mucky water in it. "I don't have a bigger jar, but that should be a perfect home for ..uh, what did you name him again?" It seemed Calder was missing the point of the boy being here.

Israfel wasn't sure why the boy was staring at him so intensely. He wasn't trying to lure anyone or anything with his 'supposed siren sexiness', (his mother harped on it far far to often for it to be true. It really was just female fantasy and vanity in the end. The real FEAR was in the siren song! Even he knew that!). "Do I have something in my hair?" He did. The little leech had slithered it way to perch on his crown. Israfel ignored it. It was done feeding after all. And it did muss up his hair. He liked un-mussed hair.
"You got a staple-gator too? I had to put mine in the closet. he kept snapping at poor Cracker. If he can't swim nice and share the water he can-go...uh..." Israfel paused. "Well, he's in the closet void thing they gave us. I don't want to know where it leads to be honest."
The change of boy who seemed fixated on his wings to a bubbly helpful little monster was nice. Israfel did so feel awkward under such obvious attentions. The jar was...timidly taken. Doing his best to keep up a smile, the siren got the feeling this boy, for his worn out looks and poorly kept hair, really didn't know how to keep clean. Maybe it was just his race. Still, a small grimace was on Israfel's face as he wiped the jar clean with a small lace handkerchief. So much for that cloth.
"I uh, thought he was your leech. I mean, I don't dislike him, but a name I-" Israfel wasn't sure how you kept a leech as a pet. It was cute. Yes. It didn't mess up his feathers or hair and didn't slime him. Not a very problematic pet really. "Hester." he just blurted the name. "I can call him Hester?" Israfel was unsure. It was his leach now? Not the boy's? So confusing.

Hester, as Israfel dubbed him, was now moving about the boy's hair and perked proudly on it's new owner. Typically Calder would be upset. He loved his friends dearly and usually took offense when one of them left his room. Taking it personally, he usually thought they were angry at him or found him boring and it wasn't unknown for him to crawl on the ground, pleading for the leech to come back home. However, Israfel was not a jerk. He was a pleasant, very stunning teen that was very nice to him and seemed to care for his little friend. If he had been a jerk, Calder would have snatched the leech up and thanked him for returning him. It just showed him that his friend knew how to pick the best. They could see the pure heart of a leech lover where no one else could. For that reason, he could respect Hester's decision to be with this boy.
Smiling, he watched with a sort of 'aw' expression as Hester nestled atop the boy's crown, and slowly touched his hand to his cheek as he thought they were very cute together. "All the leeches here are my friends, but if they make a decision to find someone else, I respect it. It's what friends do after all, and you two look great together. I would be a criminal to separate true friendship as beautiful and precious as this." He gestured to them both, framing them as the poster duo for Leech Lovers everywhere.
As for the name, he wanted to giggle. "Hester is a great name. Don't you think so, Fester?" He asked, but as he glanced up, he noticed his friend was not there chewing on his ear. Looking about, he inspected his hair, pulling out sticks and a piece of sea-grass before touching his neck and pulling off the leech. Cupping him, he gently petted his back, causing the leech to ripple with delight. "Leeches are really easy to take care of. They will tell you when they need fed. Just make sure they don't eat off of any dead things. I think they get confused around the undead. Moving and all. Oh, and the water can't be too cold or too hot. Usually room temperature is fine..unless you live in a frozen lake or with fire. You don't live in a frozen lake or around fire, do you? I don't think you would." Fester curled around on his back, letting Calder rub his slick belly. It's little mouth opened and closed with enjoyment.

Calder was obviously admiring the picture of Israfel and Hester, but all Israfel inferred was 'he is looking at me like I am awesome. Yeah. I'm pretty awesome. With a leech on my head. I'm a pretty cool guy.' BUT! Israfel could cater to his own narcissism later. He was in the middle of a conversation at the moment.
"Oh! I-" Israfel never intended to keep the leech. He could, but...well. Why not? He already had half a dozen other oddities lurking about his island, what was one more. Besides, leeches were good medicine. Got the blood flowing and all that. "I think he can do well in one of the small ponds then. My room is mostly sea water, but, all the pools on the higher ground are freshwater. Nothing frozen or on fire, no. That would ruin my feathers." Not to mention his outfits. One of which had already been smuggled into the tree by a few of his winged friends. "He should be fine there." Plucking the leech from his head, Israfel mimicked Calder's rubbing of the leech's belly, making it wiggle with delight.
"Oh! He won't try to eat my snacks will he? My mom sends me human jerky sometimes and I really...well." He blushed. "It's nothing like a freshly drowned sailor, but, it's a taste of home you know?" Israfel stopped for a second. "Oh Jack, where are my manners, I'm Israfel." He held out a hand, Hestergave a little wiggle, clearly wanting more belly rubs.

It was a match! Hester, newly titled, would go with the boy and start a happy, long lasting friendship that would last until they ripened into old age. They would be there as best man for when either got married, and there when either one got sick. Not to mention that Hester would be entering a new room, a new person who probably dearly needed Hester's unique companionship and would also make friends with new creatures. He could only feel good about seeing his friend go – though he had been attached to all his little friends. Still, this was best.
At the introduction, Calder beamed. "Yeah! Introductions. I'm Calder." He took his hand, shaking it with enthusiasm. His palm was still wet from the water he poured into a jar, but his fingers were slender and pale. "They don't eat jerky. I have plenty of smoked and dried meats that I've packed and none of the leeches here have touched them. They like fresh food, blood mostly, and will seek it out when they need it. Still, it's best to feed them once a day." Calder broke the handshake to lift up a sleeve to show his arm, dotted with little marks. "It's nothing big at all, just a few drops, and you don't have to feed nearly as many as I do." While other people might say he should stop collecting leeches for friends, he could only think about adopting more. This was further reason why it was a good thing that Israfel taking one was beneficial.
Considering they were back to introductions, something that seemed to have been done backwards, Calder bite his lip, petted Fester, and looked back at Israfel's wings. "I'm a kelpie, so I know all about human flesh, though my mother's recipe might be different to your mother's cooking. You said you eat sailors? Does that mean you come from the sea? The big, salty, blue sea? You don't look like you're from the sea and you don't have a pelt around your waist. I thought birds lived on land anyways? Are you a…ah…seagill…monster?" Yeah, that was a seabird, right? Majestic, colorful seagills.
If it wasn't obvious, Calder had never been to the sea.

This was Israfel's expression:
Mortified.
"Seagul? GODS NO." He looked offended. As he was. "I'm a siren. Our race is made of songstresses. Our ancestors Gods and Goddesses! Not sea rats! Bleg! I take it you've never been to the sea." The siren sighed. "To be honest, I've lived in halloweentown my whole life. My family roost if a little offways, out in the ocean yes, we're by the natural portal to the human world. Bermuda Triangle is what the humans call it. It's how my mom and the elders go hunting. My nest mates and I are too young to go to the hunting isles." A small blush. "We attract sailors to their deaths by luring them to swim to our island, where they either drown when they hit water, or, they die when the waves crash them into the rocky shoreline. Mom then drags them back."
Hester wiggled his way to Israfel's shoulder. "Kelpie though? I'm not familiar. Are you from the Greeks or Romans?" Most of Israfel's other monster knowledge came from the lore of his race and the altered lore of the humans about them. Hardly worldly. "You obviously are a water born creature, (which makes you so much better then half the ghouls and boils here), and from your room...Amazonian maybe?" Was his race of all males? Israfel had no idea.

It was rather embarrassing to be called out on your own ignorance of the world, but Calder nodded, being honest that he had never been to the sea. "I haven't been many places." Which was an understatement. His travels hadn't gone a few miles from his birthplace, and the few, rare visits to family hadn't been to any place different to his own home. The geography and people were the same plus or minus a slime-covered toadstool. Gauging from Israfel's reaction, seagulls were bad, disgusting things. He didn't know the sea had rats. Now he did.
"Sorry. I haven’t been too far from my home. This is actually the first time I've been to a school." Okay, so it was out there. He was as new to the city as you could be. Having more than 20 people in his mile radius was still overwhelming for him at times.
As for what Israfel was looking for, Calder had no idea. He looked about, inspecting his room with a degree of self-consciousness and trying to see what the other monster was seeing. Did it look Greek? Roman? Amazonian? He really didn't think it said aside from needing to be organized a bit more. He still had to clean up the shredded jacket in the corner and turn over a few baskets that his stapler and scissors had tried to destroy.
"No, I'm Scottish. From the Devon Clan." He decided to switch his accent, lightly slipping it in as a display that yes, he was Scottish, and yes, he did not speak with the accent to others. It was a slight introduction, as his accent wasn't as thick as his other relatives – partly to blame on his father's part who had dropped his accent once he went to school as a young boy. "My kind hails from Scotland. We live in flooded areas, rivers, and ponds. You'll be hard-pressed to find a body of water without at least one of us. My family originated from the river Devon and claimed it as our own. Well, most of us. I think we migrated a bit." He cleared his throat, deciding that he'd drop his accent again. It only sounded appropriate to use when he was with other people who shared the same accent and was his own kind. He thought that Israfel might find him odd. "My kind also drowns. We attract people to us, and if they ride us, we throw them right into the water and drag them under. My parents are experts at it. They bring home great suppers all the time. I'm too young to go, too." So they shared a few things in common already. Still, from looking at Israfel, who clearly could attract sailors to their deaths, and Calder, who needed combed and given a new set of clothes, it was hard to tell.
"Do you change too? Kelpies can change into two forms. We have a white horse form and a great, black, dark beastly form. I'm working on the last one. Um..and what's a songstress? Do you fix songs?" The name suggested they sewed together songs, but he didn't know what sort of magic that was at all.
