You may or may not know that there used to be quite a few electric cars around, until a few years back when they were all repossessed by their companies and crushed. they basically erased them from our memories. you may have been lucky enough to re-learn about them from a documentary called "Who killed the electric car?" You can find it online if you want to watch it.

Anyways, I JUST saw a commercial for the new Nissan LEAF 100% Electric Car!! http://www.nissanusa.com/leaf-electric-car/index I'm so hyped! Finally, no more stupid hybrids! I wish Nissan great success and hope there will be more models available soon.

Pass on this great news!

Noone forcefully removed any memories from my head.

I do remember that back in the 90s, electric vehicles were significantly less viable, and that the development of the technology was stunted, because there weren't enough investors.

But I've been reading about electric vehicles for years. They never went away.

The range of this vehicle is actually a lot worse than some of the ones on the market, if I remember correctly. Tesla has had multiple vehicles outbut they've generally been super expensive. They have some much more affordable ones coming in the next couple of years.

I don't see any electric car that is practical for people like me, who live out in the boonies, and like to go to town and haul back TONS of stuff. Hydrogen power would make more sense, but there's less profit---and control--with hydrogen power. Wonder why they're not pushing hydrogen powered cars? As far as that goes, there's no reason not to retrofit the cars we have to use natural gas, at least in the plains. The gas is available and there's no pollution problem, unless a drop of water from the exhaust pipe upsets you. Again, no big profit, and no potential government control. If it doesn't make you wonder, it should.

umm not all electric cars are weak, and its power sourse isnt relevant to its horse power. its a machine and heavier machines have run on electricity, as long as its got the parts it shall run.

*it would be prone to use more power like a normal car does. but it does the same for gas.*

Range on a charge is the major problem. If you end up having to use your reserve power, which is usually a regular gasoline-powered engine, what's the point? It's not the speed, Hoshi, it's the distance. And I'm not going to spend enough money on a vehicle to buy a good-sized piece of land, either. The land can feed me----the car can only take me to the store.

well the patents for the best battries GM stole and wont ever use. so im sure theres better battries and whatnot. and this could work if thed allow them to compete freely without big oil giving them a no

I'm not saying that no one should have an electric car, just that for most of us who live in fly-over country they're not a sensible option. If you live where your commuting distance, speeds, and cargo needs will be well provided for with an electric vehicle (and you're providing your own electricity) then an electric car may be a good car for you. It just wouldn't work for me or for anyone that I know at this point.

doesnt mean its impossible. if we allow it devolop it would be able to.
PostPosted: Mon Sep 20, 2010 2:55 pm

Nothing is impossible. If and when there is an electric car that meets my needs and desires, I'll certainly consider it----but if any government intends to force me to buy one by limiting my choices to vehicles that will not work for me, there's always a horse and wagon. I would enjoy the scenery.

@Kegan---although I have to make wise decisions, I have to admit to you that I've been watching the Tesla for a while. That is a wicked gorgeous car, and serious competition for the V-12 Jag I've wanted since I was a kid! Either one of them would be a great ride from KC to Denver! Sadly, there's only room for 1 friend, and that just wouldn't cut it for me.

You know, another thing that irritates me about electric vehicles is that they don't tell you how much it's going to cost to charge one---like an Energy Star rating on major appliances. It's not like they don't know. The electric company here just got a rate increase, and is already (within 2 months) asking for another one. It all seems very fishy to me.

Tesla has a 5-7 seater in development: The Model S.

Also, the price of electricity varies from place to pace, so you can't really stick a price tag on it.

Most appliances can give you their watt hours, which will allow you to figure out the price. But with a battery, it's mostly whatever the battery capacity is, until it's full. Not counting any idling from the outlet when it's fully charged(All things that are plugged in consume a little energy idly.)

The battery sizes on these things vary, and they actually need to be replaced every now and then, because of natural wear, and things like the memory effect. It's not so much that the capacity of these things is hidden, as much as it's just not listed. I'm sure it's written right on the battery. Customer support probably get asked a lot.

I know how it works, and if they can make an "educated guess" for refrigerators, washers, dryers, water heaters, microwave ovens, etc., then they can do the same, per charge, with vehicles.

People here have been having LOTS of trouble with their electric vehicles. The batteries needed are not usually produced in this country (too dangerous, produce them somewhere else!), and some of the service manuals are not readily available even to the dealers who sold the cars!

I do love the Teslas. But farmland in this part of the country goes for $1500 to $3500 an acre, generally, with the higher-priced acreages having year-roung creekfront or riverfront. I'd be SO silly not to buy land!

I agree 100%, land over a car anytime. Whatever waste you produce with a normal car probably won't outweigh what you save by growing your own food instead of relying on stuff that was sent here from halfway around the world. l;us you're doing your families bodies better!

Plus I would like to know how well it would hold up to sub-zero temperatures? I live in an area where that is pretty well known. From what I have heard electric cars don't really hold up well in the cold.
