She had almost started to forget a lot of things.
Like there was a world outside of time spent with Grayson, or she had responsibilities and duties beyond doing her homework and staying in school. Or that she had friends who she still hadn't talked to, people she hadn't seen in... in four months, going on five, even if it seemed like only three weeks to her.
So Elzo's reaction when she called him had been rather... surprising.
It was like he was talking to her in all caps: ELKE? ELKE IS IT REALLY YOU? And for a bit, she'd been confused, worried even. Had something bad happened? Then she'd remembered: of course. The crash. Everyone she knew thought she had died, except for those of the many people who had been in the dreaming coma. Of course, and she hadn't called him, had barely thought of him--caught up in her own personal misery, and then her private joy.
She spent most of the conversation apologizing, and then asked if he'd meet her at a certain ice cream place--she needed her henshin pen back, she said, she was sorry to have burdened him with it.
For some reason, he didn't seem all that bothered, and Elke sat to wait for her friend. She would have to apologize a million more times before things would be right, she thought.

He'd kept it out of fear, and sentimentality. At the hospital, the pen lay untouched in a show box at the dorm, as he'd gotten the news. The horrific, harsh news. Iin his fear, in his sadness, he'd kept it. It had sat hidden away with a few other senshi related items. And for a while, he felt guilty. Chronos would want it. Would she want it? Was it in bad form? She he give it to Astraea? Keep it? She had told him she was done. Done with being Virgo. She was just Elke now. And while it had made him sad, he understood. He'd understood until he'd been told she died. Not from darkness but from human error. From a car crash.
For whatever reason, he felt a need to hang onto it, like a false hope. Hope that Virgo was still going to come back, he smiling filling the darkness that seemed to loom over Destiny City like a cloud. But she never came. She had vanished, like so many others.
So he had thought.
The pen didn't fade with time, as much senshi magic did. So when Elke 'returned from the grave, he wanted to cry. The pen's owner lived. Elke lived, and so, Elzo felt his world brighten a little more. As he waited, he was tempted to just start calling out her name, he was so excited.
He lasted all of 40 seconds.
"ELKEEEEEEEE~"

Grayson was asleep, and she didn't want to wake him, so she sat at the table somewhat impatiently. Her green-eyed gaze continually flicked about, searching for her friend's familiar brunette head. It seemed to take a while, but every time she checked the face of her cell phone barely a minute had passed. And, right when they'd said they were going to meet...
She turned with a bright smile, one of her best smiles, got up from her chair to hold out both hands to Elzo. Not for the pen, but for a hug--and it was a beast of a hug, one of the tightest she'd given to anyone since she woke up.
Elke looked... different. Not bad, although she was worryingly skinny; she just seemed a lot sadder, overall, than she had been previously. Still! She was there, alive--what more could anyone want? "Elzo, I'm so glad you're here," she said, as if he'd been the 'dead' one and she left behind. "I missed you! How has everything been? I'm glad everyone woke up. Did your brother wake up?"

He'd expected her to be the same. The Elke Elzo felt embrace him, hug him, was not the same Elke he'd last seen. This Elke had blond hair for one. But the real change was something internal, a genuine sense of change, something that went beyond basic human speech and expression. A cloud or aura that surrounded her once vivid self was gone, masked, warped. The Elke he knew then was not the same Elke he saw now. It was sobering. It was Elke.
Letting her go from his half of the hug, Elzo sat himself across from her, clearly less agitated now that he'd seen her with his own two eyes. Now that he'd felt her arms around him again. To know she was real again. That his friend was alive again. "Good, good. I-" He sighed and gave her another hug, leaning across the table to do so. "God, I've missed you. But yeah, Marlo woke up. He'd doing loads better, but what happened with you? Everybody thought you died! I mean, just poof. No more Elke! Also, you changed you hair. BUT YOU DIED." He was torn from commenting about her loved her old hair color but blond was very cute but OH MY GOD WASN'T SHE SUPPOSEDLY DEAD? "How did they mess up? Not that I want you dead god no, but just...What happened?"

She didn't want to let him go, and tried to hold on, but eventually she released her grip to sit in her chair again. Her green eyes were bright--with tears? With happiness? Who knew--as she stared at Elzo, a little smile on her lips. It fell when Elzo asked what had happened. "I... there was a car crash," she explained, haltingly. "You remember what it was like back then? Everything was crazy, there were so many people in that weird coma, and then two blue-haired girls come in with head injuries and one dies, but the staff are so busy, they think it was the other girl who died, and then me. Me. They thought my name was... Elanor Ansel. But it wasn't me, because my hair's blonde."
The entire time she'd been fussing with her skirt, and only then she smiled a bit. "I'm really glad he woke up. And... yes. This is my natural color." She ran a hand over her hair, nervously. "I'm back, I didn't die, and... and my..." Brother? Not so much, not since Zue had had words with her, the way she looked at him seemed altered--from a brother of the heart to something else of the heart she didn't want to examine so closely. "My Grayson, he lives too. Almost everything is alright now."

His mouth was oddly dry as Elke explained the situation to Elzo. He didn't what to say. How to say it. How did you comfort, heck, how did you even cope with something like that. Elzo had no idea. Pardon, he had one idea. And that idea was one Elke had always brought out. Hugs. Lots and lots of hugs.
He was going to hug her all day it seemed. You know what? He might as well. Moving the seats around, and sitting closer to Elke, Elzo was happy to just be able to know he hadn't lost a friend that night-- that it was just a mistake. "It's not okay. Not really, but it's close. Things have changed. Changed a lot." He fished out his keys. A small flash of something that belonged to Elke. Something Elzo needed to give back. "...I can give you a ride home, but I expect you'd like to go home on your own." He slid the keys back, flashed her pen again. "I hung onto it. I couldn't let them take it and risk it falling who knew where. It's still your's Elke." A tiny chuckle. "If you're still going to be the virgin that is."

Elke was kind of surprised to be hugged again, and she almost shied away at it; then she remembered it was Elzo, he was like her brother. She smiled then, and helped move the chairs so they could sit closer together. "Is it bad, then? How things are?" The blonde girl tucked the pen into her bag quickly, in the manner of something shameful that had to be concealed.
Her face flamed red at the nickname he'd come up with for her other self. "Daddy and Pop say I can't be otherwise 'til I've been married five years," she said, making a half-hearted attempt to turn the tables on him for once.

For a while Elzo was a bit stunned. Elke, innocent and pure Elke, knowing what he was talking about? Scandalous! Still, the stunned expression didn't last and soon mirth returned to his face. "Sounds like a good plan. I approve." Thumbs up were even given. Her dad and Gramps sounded like the kind of guys he could fully stand behind when it came to Elke. "But, Its...weird. I don't know how to describe it to be honest. I guess you'd have to get back into the game to understand." He sighed. The world waited for no one. Such a bother sometimes.
"Elke."
He looked at the sky. It hadn't changed. Not really.
"Let's get ice cream. I'll even give you a piggy back ride."

Ha! She did it! Elke was beaming, pleased with herself. "I'm almost sixteen," she bragged, "I'm gonna be as old as Serenade soon." Of course, they shared the same birthday. She'd be as old as Serenade never, because Serenade would be seventeen the day Elke was sixteen.
How unfair was that!
"Okay," she said, frowning a bit; she held up her hands, childlike, to be picked up. "But you don't get half my sprinkles. Andeon tried to pull that and it was very, very uncool. Or any of my peanut butter cups!" Andeon was always trying to trick her out of her snacks.
