User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. "This is it." Taking the two steps with Lonan, onto the floor of the gazebo, Elle turned to face the sunset. The open air construction was weathered, stained by salt and bleached by sun, but it still stood. No more than fifty feet away, the pale sand blended into the sea...and the steady rush of the waves upon the shore soothed her. It was the sound of home.

Overhead, the Villa sat perched upon the distant cliffs...the lights of Aki's bedroom glimmering faintly. Against the base of the cliffs, tall pedestals of moss dappled rocks stood erect from the waves....causing the wind to hum in changing pitch.

"Blessed ocean water was a component of Kudzu's spell. I thought perhaps I could gather some, since the moon is full, and share your company as well." Gently, her hand sought his...Elle brought his knuckles upward, and pressed her lips to them. "You can meet him, someday, if you'd like."

They had a while to wait before the moon rose, thankfully. Lonan was quiet, more so it seemed than usual, so she was thankful for a peaceful place to share his silence.

The teen had been silent. Moreso than was usual. It could probably be brushed off as coincidental since he was learning new ground. His steps never faltered but he did take a slower pace. The bottom of the staff hitting the gazebo's floor made a warm, hollow sound.

He took a moment tracing the floor with his staff to learn the surface. It made a soft scraping sound as his other hand sought the frame. He felt the bitter softness of sand and salt worn wood. But it was comforting in a way. Something vaguely familiar.

"I would like to meet him someday, if he as close to you as he seems." There was a trace of warmth in the tone despite the softness of the voice. The corner of his mouth twitched up as he felt Elle's lips on his hand. Gently moving he followed the line of her face to cup her cheek. It was odd feeling so welcomed. But something he would not change for the world.

Something was bothering him. A niggling at the back of his mind. He knew the feeling, knew it was a forewarning, but of what he could not remember. Momentarily distracted he explored the little warning. And was rewarded with a tightening around his heart and a flash of pain in his mind. This could spell disaster in more ways than one.

"Elle, you have a choice at present. One to let me wander away for a time and ... deal... with something, or stay with me and find out what you might just rather not know about me. The choice is your's though I beseech you to keep your empathy clamped tight no matter what you see or hear."

Setting her bag upon the rough wood, scooting it under a bench with one foot, Elle turned and examined Lonan silently. He was serious, that much was obvious...and the glimpse she felt before she respected his words and closed her mind to him worried her greatly.

Stepping forward, barefoot and silent but for her jewelry, Elle let her face rest in his cupped hand. She knew her answer even as he spoke, and likely so did he, but she gave it another round of slow consideration.

Finally, her hand slipped into his...leading Lonan back down the steps.

"Leave behind what you can. It will be safe here. Just a few steps, to the water's edge." Elle's voice was even, an offering, with no trace of pity or pleading. There was something potent about straddling the point where two worlds collided, cleansing water and shifting sand.

She could feel the dark swell rising within him, but kept her heart close...though it pained her to do so. She would be there with him, even if she couldn't share his burden.

He visibly relaxed for a moment when she spoke. Still, the real test was to come. Leaving his staff he let her lead him closer to the water's edge.

The tightening worsened around his chest and his breathing became a bit ragged. His hair seemed to become damp and his wings curled instinctively closer to himself, dampening themselves. Around the tips of the fingers Elle held a trace of red started to outline the digits. Closer now.

As the water caressed the bare soles of their feet and pushed against their ankles, Elle stepped back...one hand raising to brush his cheek. "I will be here, Lonan, even if you cannot feel me. Just reach, and I will find you."

Her other hand strayed to her belt, lifting a twisted piece of lotus root gracefully to her tongue. It would dull her empathy, drive the old shadows back. Even as it touched her tongue, and the tingle already spreading, Elle removed it just as thoughtfully. With a single flick, she sent it spinning into the water...the warm thrum upon her tongue fading.

If Lonan would face this with naught more than his will, so would she.

Elle had no advice, and only the comfort of her warmth to offer...but until she saw what it was that Lonan so dreaded, she would give him space. All she wanted, though, was to hold the shaking young man in her arms and share the pain with him.

The water felt like a balm followed by a sharp n**. Then they were opening again, letting salt touch. Awakening slightly, a bitter gift.

"I know Elle, but do not let me hurt you. I cannot promise that I will be able to control my hands. I do not want to hurt you." Crescent cuts on his palms were not uncommon after these events.

He smelt the faint trace of lotus before it was dropped. A faint sense of guilt came with the realization she wouldn't at least dull her own worry.

THe teen sank to his knees in the gentle waters as scars along his back and chest opened. Breathing hard he clutched his hands to fists, holding them over his heart as the tightening came again. Crimson started to run from the corners of his eyes, faint tear-trails of blood.

"This is what I must carry, Elle. To bleed for the hearts of others." He fell silent as more scars opened and bled. The red on wings and hair became blood stains, turning the seafoam a desperate shade of red.

This felt like a short bout. He sincerely hoped it was.

Elle circled him slowly, calves spotted with sanguine seafoam. Behind him, quietly to one side, she watched the fine trickles of blood wind and twist down his pale skin.

As Lonan turned inwards, bowed with pain, Elle's eyes slowly filled with tears. It was too much, too much for one soul to hold, and it spilled over even as she halfheartedly tried to keep herself walled. She did not cry for Lonan. Silently, she cried with him.

Reaching to span the space between them, Elle slid her hands over his shoulders...fingers closing tightly. With intimate strength, she connected herself to Lonan only by touch, his agony still barely brushing her heart. Even that was enough.

"Don't..." The breif whisper barely made it past his lips. She didn't need to feel this. Shouldn't feel this.

Desperation. Pain. Fear. Terror. And then... reluctant acceptance.

The emotions were violent in their intensity, shaking him to his core. Jaw clenched a small rivulette of red trickled from the corner of his mouth. His wings twitched spasmodically, shedding looser feathers into the foam, creating little clouds of pink around them as they were washed away.

Images of pain, weapons, screaming, terror and a laugh that sounded like the devil's own flashed through his mind. He watched as the figure drew a weapon, aimed it as 'him', and snuffed out the life. The last trickling emotions of the man who'd managed to keep his proud face even facing his end were shunted straight into Lonan. He never even knew if the man really died or if through some miracle he had been found before he bled out. He'd never know.

Sooner that was usual the emotions started to subside. He couldn't tell. It could have been hours since it began for all he knew. Panting for breath the body started to slowly come down from the rush of adrenaline and emotion. His body was covered in almost delicate patterns of crimson. Slowly the scars started to heal again, eyes burning from the blood that he'd cried.

"...I.. am sorry you had to see that, Elle. So sorry..."

Black wings fell to the water, washing away the stains. He was shivering, from cold or the intensity of what he'd just experienced was up for debate. Hands slowly unclenched showing the familiar crescents and a new scar made itself known on his forearm.

Sinking to her knees in the surf, Elle rested gently against him. Her arms slid over her shoulders, hands loosely clasped before his chest as she pressed the side of her face to his hair. Warmth spread slowly through her dress as blood blossomed between them.

"Lonan, look deeper. You know me better than that. We should only be sorry if I can't find a way to help." Running her hands slowly across his shoulders, Elle sighed close to his ear. In that breath, she let her senses open again...heart jumping as the feelings they shared amplified.

"There is a way to heal all suffering."

He shook his head, sadness flowing through the tentative thread. Even with how tired he was Lonan was trying to sheild her from the residual effects. "No, Elle. I was meant to carry this, to be a balance. There's no reason you should have to experience it as well."

Feeling her lean into him he moved back to lean on her, forgetting about the blood on his freshly sealed skin. Leaning forward a moment later he coughed, spitting a final mouthful of blood into the water to be washed away. Regret and sorrow flowed through the bond for a moment before he checked himself.

"You're the only one who knows about this. I cannot stand the pity of others. But companionship... if we could just stay like this for a time without you becoming chilled..." He leaned back against her again, letting his head tilt back slightly to rest on her shoulder. On his face the tear trails cleared slightly, red dripping off as he allowed a few of his own to escape.

Settling back into the shifting sand, water lapping against her thighs, Elle guided Lonan gently back against her. One arm draped over his chest, and she smoothed his hair back quietly with her other hand.

"As long as you'd like." Lowering her face to be beside his, almost cheek to cheek as her chin rested on his shoulder, Elle let her eyes sink closed.

It was painful, what Lonan endured...painful on many levels. Yet, he accepted it, prepared for it. She couldn't imagine him accepting the lotus, this seemed like something he needed to face on his own. The mere fact that she had been allowed to witness his purging spoke volumes.

All things had an end, though. Knitting the scenes together with his distant words of his past, the night they spent together returning clearly in her memories, Elle began to weave the tale. It was a tale for none to hear, but it helped her align her thoughts. Perhaps, if she understood the whole picture...

She would understand how to help.

"When you are feeling stronger, Lonan, I would like to hear of the balance that so weighs you. You are strong, to bear it." For now, though, rest...with the haunting sound of the wind sweeping gracefully through the pinnacles in low and regretful tones.

Feeling her pull him closer he relaxed a fraction. "Thank you..."

Just having her close without her piting him was a blessing. He had been aware of the fact she might after that, but she hadn't. It took a bit of the weight from his shoulders.

"I will tell you if you ask. I cannot tell the whole thing at once or in general. There is too much." Letting his own eyes close, for all the good it did, he tilted his head so his ear was nearer her neck, concentrating on the soothing sound of her stong heart.

Nodding in silent understanding, Elle tightened her embrace. He was healing, she could feel the energy change between them...but some scars could not be eased.

Leaning forward, Elle settled her lips sidelong against his cheek and nuzzled gently...eyes closed, lashes brushing his temples. For now, she needed nothing. Everything could wait...questions, concerns, and worries.

"Lonan, some day, this will be the past. For now, all I need is to feel you beside me."

Bringing a handful of seawater slowly upward, Elle washed his shoulder idly...fingers smoothing and tracing the firming scars. Powerful ties were at work, knots too intricate to unravel by whim.

Thankfully, she was a patient soul.

He decided taht for now silence was the better part of valor. He'd never stop bleeding. That would shunt the burden onto someone else. He was unwilling to do that.

A soft murr rumbled from his throat at the gentle brush of lip and lash. The feathery touch was more substantial than stone.

"I told you before, you have netted your winter wren, and I am in no hurry to escape the net."

The wash of saltwater and the light brush of Elle's hand on his shoulder caused him to sigh softly, relaxing a touch further. The scars were there, as always, simply growing in number from time to time.

For some reason the touch meant more than words, letting him know that she wasn't disgusted. It frightened him that he had been so afraid of something like that.

Sighing, warm breath mingling with his, Elle let her arms slip lower. Leaning more firmly against him, she could feel their flesh warm through wet cloth...soft sand pressing numbly against their legs.

She smiled at his words, but did not respond...he would know she smiled, by the shift and press of simple movements of her face. She knew he could feel her...even if he could not smile back.

Her half dry hair settled like a mantle about their shoulders, smelling of incense and salt. "Lonan?"

Her silence stretched. Obviously, she had something to say.
