I was approached by a fellow band member, actually the second best french horn player in the state of New Jersey, about county band. He was talking about how its a pretty easy piece, and I was telling him how im horrible with auditions, and he said you only get better through practice. Which got me thinking. I'm debating whether or not to do county band. But I don't know if I would make it, can someone with experience in county/region/all-state rate my chances?
Trumpet player Junior in High School Range: low F# to a solid high C, can go higher though Tone: solid, open, versatile (teacher says its the best he's heard) Playing Ability: play lead in marching band going on two years, solid player, tonguing could be cleaner, I have the Hummel and Goedicke solos under my belt Experience: 7 years, 2 years with lessons Previous Ensembles: Top Middle School Band for all years possible, Middle School Jazz Ensemble, High School Jazz Ensemble (college level music) for one year, 3rd trumpet/chair out of 6, High School Honors-level Wind Ensemble (we play level 6 pieces)-tied for 3rd chair, beat out 3 others (3points from 2nd chair)
(the previous ensembles are not up to date with this year, wind ensemble/jazz ensemble auditions are not until mid-late november)
I'd really appreciate if you guys would give me an idea on whether or not I have a chance....and anyone whose done these ensembles, what are they like? And what is the audition process like?

I did county band all four years of high school. I played clarinet twice, contra alto clarinet once, and my last year I auditioned on bassoon, even though I'd only been playing for a few months, and got in no problem. So it wasn't super competitive.
My auditions were playing two scales and sight-reading. I don't remember if I had to play a prepared piece or not, but the sight-reading was very easy. The rehearsals themselves were quick paced, since we only had a few days to prepare for the concert, but they were not stressful or rushed. The repertoire was not too difficult, only a little above what I'd played in wind ensemble.
Of course, it's possible your county band could be more competitive, but even so you have nothing to lose if you don't make it. I think you should definitely go for it. It's a lot of fun smile
