Alida was in the coffee house again, on poetry night, as usual. But she hadn't gone back up onstage since that one time Arukoru had convinced her to, and read her poetry for her. He'd moved away, and she just simply hadn't found the courage herself. So she contented herself with a coffee and listening to others read their works.

Tonight was a good night, with several people getting onstage, and a good crowd seated to listen. Alida liked when there was more people. She felt she got lost in the crowd easier, didn't stand out as much. It was easy to stand out when you had black wings, a pointed tail, and lacked the ability to speak.

So she sat against the wall, sipping her coffee, her journal opened in front of her with pen at the ready, just in case inspiration hit. But as long as the people reading were good, she was more interested in that.

Duncan slipped toward the back of the cafe, his transparent wings tucked tight against his back. He had been coming in for most of the local readings, but so far had found no one inspiring enough to garner his full interest. Shakespeare still had his heart, alas, but it was harder to participate in the theatrical life when you did not want to go to college. Out of the corner of his eye he spotted familiar features, and silently slid into the seat opposite Alida. Offering her a sly smile he winked, "Good lineup tonight ah?"

Alida ducked her head and blushed as Duncan seated himself across from her, a quick smile and nod answering his question. She'd seen him many times here, but aside from that, knew almost nothing about him. It really was a shame...

A small spark of courage pushed her to pick up her pen, lower lip caught between her teeth, where she worried it. Alida scrawled a question on the open page in front of her, and turned the journal so Duncan could read it.

Did you just arrive? There was someone rather talented earlier, she'd written. It was her best attempt to strike up conversation, something she'd normally wait for the other person to do.
