[Spoon-fed discussion points in bold.]

[I'm sure no matter what color/nationality you are, you've been that way for a long time, at least a decade, probably much longer.

The thing about humans is we are so damn self-aware we can spend years of our lives trying to "find ourselves," or figure out who we are and why we're here.

So, when did you know you were the ethnicity that you are?

I myself grew up around mostly black folks. In my neighborhood, young, (especially black), kids went to school fully aware that they were black or mixed, black and another ethnicity, because it was stressed or pointed out, (on purpose or not), by family, friends and neighbors throughout their early childhood...

Does this make black kids more susceptible to culture shock?

In my opinion, it probably doesn't, simply because of the indirect exposure black, (as well as most other non-white), kids have to white people. Afterall, (especially when I was growing up), you knew white kids would see other white people on TV, in books and magazines and in their family and neighborhood; the same was, (and probably still is), true for black kids: they see white people in all TV, books and magazines as well as in public.
Does that make white kids even more susceptible to culture shock when they finally have to be around people of different ethnicities??

...Some kids may have had the luxury or growing up without the burden of being beaten over the head with what color you are. I believe it might have been in the movie Losing Isaiah, where a white girl asked her younger, adopted black brother what the difference was between her and him. I think he replied with something along the lines of "you're big and I'm little." After which, the girl proceeded to compare their arms. I'm not sure if I'm remembering it correctly, though.

Is it important to make sure your child knows they are whatever color they are, or would you have that "there's only one race, the human race" mentality toward the subject?

Do children of any color really notice race that much?]

I was racially aware since I was a little kid. I remember I wasn't allowed to play with a lot of the neighborhood kids because my father is straight up racist. The area I lived in at the time was mostly dominated by blacks. Now, with the stereotypicle mexican family you can have white friends, but I guess having black friends is some ultamite betrayle or some s**t and you will straight get tossed out on your a**.

Now after I moved in with my grandparents. (Who are just a tad bit more open minded) My best friend through 8th grade was black. His name wasKahlil Bell. Now after talking with him I could make hellah racist jokes. So I don't think blacks are more racially aware than anyone else. I just think its how you're raised that makes you aware.

I think with kids that belong to minority families race is a bigger issue than most people.

[I remember a lot of my neighbors and even my father sometimes seemed somewhat racist.

Yea, I've heard and seen a lot of racial tension between black people and hispanic/latino people, and then between Puerto Ricans and Mexicans... neutral Doesn't really make sense to me, but I guess that's just how it goes.]

[Yes, unfortunately. But I think some of it may be intolerance and just out right stupidity; like kids who grow up hating cops for no reason. rolleyes ]

[ 3nodding I don't know any kids who have justified reasons for hating cops. They either hate them because of situations like the one you mentioned, or because their parents/relatives/neighbors expressed some dislike for them and they are jumping on the bandwagon without even knowing why. talk2hand It really is idiotic.]

I didn't become in-tune with my heritage until I hit teen-dom. I'm mixed, so it's much easier for me to slip into an identity crisis.

Hmm.. I always knew I was black cause my family would talk about it all the time, but it kinda hurt to here them say things like "She got that good hair." But... I don't want my hair to be good.

There is one distint incident I do remember. My older sister took me to the park. I was playing happily (I was about 5 or 6), minding my own business. Then these two old women walked by me (they were white), and asked my sister something about me being white. I heard them, and repeated what I heard my mom say to me once, "I'm not white, I'm black! I'm just light-skinned!" This set my sister off laughing, and back then I ddn't know why. I guess it was just funny to hear a five-year-old tell off some old ladies.

[Sweet. xd You tell 'em, pigtails! Just kidding. Seriously though, I heard that "good hair" stuff too, and my parents also talked a lot about race. I'm lucky I didn't grow up the stereotypical black girl. surprised

@ Boogaloo.: I see what you mean. 3nodding "In-tune." I never really looked at it that way before. I guess I'm still not really "in-tune" with my heritage...and I'm old~er! gonk ]

Well I think that kids should know what race they are. because alot of people treat and respect you differantly because of it. its a grimm trouth that is very grimm and verry............well.. truthful. I personally don't notice race much. call it ignorant or whatever but i dont. I mostly have mexican and some white friends. but thats just kinda random. I really dont care though.I also don't think it should have a baring on who you are as a person. just so long as your not ashamed of your race then its all fine.
