Is vitamin water good for your or just a come on?

I read a couple online articles. One said that "adding vitamins to junk food doesn't make it healthy" But Vitamin water seemed to have the least sugar of all the vitamin enhanced drinks. AND the only drink without synthetic sweetner or artificial colors or flavors.

I personally LOVE the taste. But at around 2 bucks a bottle, is it just a come on? For one, they have natural flavoring BUT they are not actually juice, so there's serving of fruits or vegetable there.

Another article I read said that most people are NOT vitamin deficient, except for vitamin E which is not water soluble so must be drank with a meal. (That's fine by me) and that the vitamins in the bottle may be affected by transportation, heat etc. (well wouldn't the same apply to juice and multivitamins?)

Here's what I know. I love the taste, I prefer it over a soft drink and find it less sweet than commercial ice teas. I'm not terribly concerned about an extra 30g of sugar because I'm so active. I DO care about artificial colors, flavors and sweetners, which it has none of. I do strive to be healthy and have more than enough vitamins in the right ratios. I do drink vitamin water rather than taking multivitamins BUT I still eat the same amount of fruits and vegetables.

What do you guys think? Is it just a come on? Is there any benefit to drinking vitamin water? I'd also like to know how it compares to gatorade. Some people say gatorade is better since it has electrolites but that stuff has loads of sugar and artificial stuff in it!"

Vitamin Water contains sugar. It is cane sugar, but that is still sugar. The actual vitamin content is negligible. I personally think it's an over-priced over-hyped beverage that encourages people to buy more plastic bottles that they don't need and tricks them into thinking there is enough supplement inside to make a noticeable difference.

If you think you need vitamins, take a supplement from a reputable company that lists their sources as well as purity and standardization methods and just drink filtered water from the tap. If you desire flavor, add a little fresh lemon or lime. Drinking a Vitamin Water now and then isn't harmful, but there is no substitute for pure water.

I honestly think it's a waste of plastic and water. Best stick with natural drinks that aren't saturated with sugar or high fructose corn syrup.

I would say that over-all, it's not going to hurt you, but as everyone else has pointed out, it's another plastic bottle. I'd stick with water, from my own tap.

Plastic bottles are treated with a long list of chemical agents, generally, and they don't break down very well, but they do leach toxic substances over time. Some people could say that for this reason anything in a plastic bottle is tainted. I don't really know enough about the chemicals involved, though.

Petroleum is the basis for most materials: plastic bottles, the pills people take, gasoline and asphalt.

As for plastic bottles, I've noticed that plastic tends to leak out dioxins after a period of time. That's why you see expiration dates on water bottles. Leaving it sitting in your car in the heat will also leave a strange aftertaste.

I tried vitamin water and loved it since it didn't taste too sugary.. then I looked at the sugar content.. needless to say.. I don't drink it anymore.

I have a water bottle I take out with me; if I feel like something sweet I'll either stick a tea bag in it and add some honey, or I'll add lemon or some fruit juice. >3

It saves me money, I don't waste plastic, and it's better for my body.

Either way.. it's not going to kill you or anything.
If you like how it tastes drink it.. just don't expect to get all your vitamins from a drink. ;p

What sucks is that tap water has a bunch of s**t in it too. And unless you have a tap water filter, I think it's better to drink it out of a bottle, since some is treated with reverse osmosis.
The toxins from the plastic only leak in when the bottle is heated, so other wise I think it's alright to drink water out of plastic bottles.

Though at the same time, it IS another plastic bottle in the landfill unless you recycle. Which is not available everywhere. sweatdrop

Actually, heat isn't the only way.... heat would definitely speed up the process, but plastic isn't really inert.

Most bottled water is just tap water. Tap water is regulated by the EPA, which had much higher standards than the FDA, who handle bottled water. Seems like a loss no mater what. I'd buy a filter, if I didn't trust my tap water.

I'm not really sure most people know what reverse osmosis really is, but it really just involves removing solutes from the water, such as salt from sea-water. It seems to be more of a buzz word, and it can really just mean anything that's run though a membrane with pressure.

It's not like the water from your tap hasn't been treated at all. It was probably even held to stricter standards.

I do trust my tap water, but I have a filter I usually use cause I like the taste better. I have a steel bottle I drink from or nalgene when I go to school. I DO recycle all my bottles, I honestly don't care about the sugar cause it's not synthetic and I'm extremely active. I do love the taste and I don't expect to get ALL my vitamins out of there, but I do believe there's a few in there by the time I drink it and that's good enough for me.

I plan to bike to school (25km) until it snows so it would be kind of my lil treat to myself for doing this.

What vitamin water are you drinking where it's not synthetic sugar?
I know Glaceau seems to have "pure" sugar, but really it's crystaline fructose, same difference as corn syrup.

I just wish there was a way to get rid of all of the actual chemicals and other medications that are in water. sweatdrop
I'm not what a 100% sure fire method to cleanse it would be though.
I know the chlorine taste really gags me though, unless I have it filtered or boil it first.
