PERSONALITY
Jing Liu is eccentric – the type of person that doesn't make sense to anyone else unless they are on the exact same wavelength. To most people, he will seem strange, to say the least. However, once you get to know the boy a bit better, his 'differences' start to become increasingly more typical and unremarkable. Liu doesn't believe in the word 'normal'. He is what he is, and he's intent on enjoying his life no matter what anyone else thinks. Having been raised by a odd grandfather and a mother who only wanted to please him, Liu became a strange child, often speaking in tongues. He became unpredictable and different, and that made it hard for him to fit in with the other children his age - in effect, he just gave up and did whatever he wanted to.

Liu is incredibly absent-minded. He can be dreamy to a fault, lounging in his own world – he doesn't bother himself with trying to keep up with everything that goes on outside of himself, and sometimes he just...disconnects. He has a crippling habit of forgetfulness, and that's put him into a number of uncomfortable situations. However, his absent-mindedness doesn't stop there, sadly. Liu often walks into walls and other people, and almost always ends up blundering and stuttering in apology. Clumsiness always was one of his more undesirable traits and though Liu's tried time and time again to stay on his feet and look graceful, it doesn't work unless it's something he has a true passion for.

Always direct and to the point, Liu is blunt and isn't afraid to point out what he means. He doesn't like small talk or people who dance around a subject, because it wastes time, and time is money and honor. He'll inform anyone straightforwardly of his opinion, usually regardless of status. He hates stupid people, and refuses to tolerate vapid women to be the most exact. It's safe to say he has social problems at times.

Liu is defiant – he hates being called weak, or when others presume that because he's small, he'll be some spineless coward. He stands up for himself stubbornly, and despises asking for help. When Liu gets embarrassed it's like watching a storm come - he gets annoyed and irritated and becomes a general pain in the a**. A tip for anyone: don't ever call the boy a late bloomer or a child, a weakling or something of that sort. There will be everlasting hate, and Liu's everlasting hate is probably worse than an all-out battle between the Legions and the Nobles. He knows full well that he is not the strongest person in the world, but Liu also knows very well that he has to get over it.

jing cheng .
jing liu's grandfather, and perhaps the most important person in
his life, the man was a devote Taoist and taught liu the ways of
baguazhang. he died of a deadly fever and regrettably never finished
his teachings.

jing mei .
a woman who loved a man, and a woman who's man one day ran
away. depressed, the only thing that kept her alive was jing liu, and
yet still, to this day, she is always ill. perhaps it is something mental,
and yet perhaps she just doesn't want to show her face anymore.

Born just outside the bustle of the Imperial City, Liu never knew his father - the man left his mother before he was born. It was safe to say that whenever Liu brought up his father in any conversation at all, his mother cheerfully changed the subject to something else and after a while, the boy learned not to ask. Sure, there were times when he wondered who had fathered him, and Liu tried to bat away thoughts like that. They'd only lead to being hurt.

He was raised by his wise and quirky Taoist grandfather at most times, seeing as his mother seemed to always be ill. The boy cooked for the family and did most of the chores and became self-efficient to an impressive point. Grandfather gave the boy his education, and over time it became clear that the boy was incredibly intelligent. Liu basked in the fact that he could solve most puzzles, memorize the hardest of literature, and mix a motley pot of chemicals. However, over time, it became clear that in this age, no one was much inclined towards education, but towards the growing tension between the Legion and the Nobles. That proposed a deep problem for Liu, seeing as he did not and didn't want to know the ways of the sword. His grandfather started to teach the boy a different type of way of fighting than most, and Liu took to it better than others. Oh no, he was still as clumsy as usual, but he was better when it came to the actual movement of the art. Baguazhang. 八卦掌. He was taught that the art of Baguazhang was made to focus the body's energy into Qi, and use the Qi to attack - it seemed simple, and Liu started to learn, slowly. (Though he really ... had ... no ... skillz ...)

Liu also learned to understand the strange dialect the old man spoke in; the man often brought over his friends to play mahjongg and poker with, and Liu often stood to the side and chatted with them. Over time though, he became detached from the children his age, and instead found himself much more cozier when with the older generation. And well - Liu didn't mind if the other kids snickered at him - he was going to go his own way, and it wasn't his fault if they didn't understand. Liu wanted to be a soul conduit, a peaceful contributor to the Noble Retainers while it seemed everyone else wanted to be a fighter. Who would want to be a fighter? Blood and gore and despair. That is all the job entailed.

It was well known that Liu's family had always supported the Nobles. They were loyal to the Noble Retainers and there was no question about that - ever since the start, when Liu's great-great-great-great-grandfather (one of the greatest warriors of his century) had fallen in love with one of the Nobles, a brave woman, and married her. The family's status had taken a deep dive over the last few hundred years, but they still remained loyal. Liu found it a personal insult if someone were to say something against the Retainers; a feeling his grandfather had passed on to him. Grandfather never wanted his grandson to become a soul conduit. He himself - he had been a proud fighter, and had risen in the ranks of the Retainers before retiring to his home outside the Imperial City; as had all his ancestors before him. Sadly, Liu's spirit was not the same as his Grandfather's, and though the man remained defiant, Liu was not changing his mind.

It was three months before Liu would start to attend the Academy.

Jing Cheng died. Liu was at his bedside - he watched as the old man became sick, much too sick. It was strange, really. Grandfather had always been the one made of steel, and in his entire life, Liu had never once seen before the man get sick. It seemed unreal. As the days passed by, Jing Cheng ailed and his fever could not be soothed. The day his beloved grandfather died of a deadly fever, his last words were, 'Protect your mother. Be a man.'

Three months later, the Academy had gained another potential Fighter.

quirks .
xxxxxclean-freak
xxxxxxxxxx Jing Liu has always been very conscious of the environment around him - not to mention his own cleanliness. If there's one thing in the world that will win you points in his book, it's if you are clean. Germaphobe isn't quite the right word - he can survive in a dirty environment, but he loathes the thought of it.
xxxxxclutz
xxxxxxxxxx He trips over things, knocks things over - hell, he knocks people over. Don't get in his way, because he'll probably find a way to stumble into you.
xxxxxaccent
xxxxxxxxxx He has a bit of an accent, a lisp - after living with his eccentric grandfather for so long, Liu has picked up on his way of speaking, and now it seems stuck with him.
