This thread is a general all-in-one information thread for 5SM. It features school information, guild rules, and is the main OOC thread.

Now that it's half done, and the bulk of important information is up here, this thread is now open for discussion. Check back often though, because there's still a lot left to be completed!

Aug 31 2010: This thread went up, and half of it is done already! It's now open for conversation, and the rest of the thread will be up within another day, maybe two.

If You Are New:

__1. Read this thread first – oh wait, you already are! Fantastic, keep going!

__2. Send a friend request to the guild account, Five Schools of Magic. That would be me. All sorts of fun things happen when you’re friends with me. You get birthdays gifts, for one thing.

__3. But only if we know when your birthday is! Send your new friend (me) a PM with the month and day of your birthday, and I’ll add it to the list.

__4. Post in the OOC at the end of this guide. Say hello to us!

__5. Join one of the roleplays. That should be easy, considering that’s 99% of the reason you joined. Hopefully.

Guidelines For Everyone

__1. See the Gaia logo in the corner? Gaia TOS, that means half the rules don’t need to be said, because you already know them.

__2. Most of you are seasoned roleplays and have common sense, so I’m sure I don’t need to tell you what to do when That One Scene comes up in the story. Because it will. And it happens. And time skips were invented for that.

__3. Third person, past tense. Please.

__4. Post length – On average, we post one or two paragraphs per post. No, they aren’t the longest posts in the world. They don’t have to be. Post however much feels comfortable to you, but don’t feel pressured to keep up with the more detailed, longer-winded people.

__5. Post formats – some people love them, some people can’t be bothered to change their font in the slightest. It doesn’t matter, but if you do use a post format, the text should be readable and easy to find within the format. Strange, I know, but some people get carried away and it’s hard to make out which part of the post is the format and which is the story.

__6. You CANNOT control another person’s character without their express permission. This includes but is not limited to:

______a. Godmodding/Powerplaying: Yes, gods are characters here. But even gods have weaknesses. If your character is somehow the perfect combatant – expect a lot of complaints coming your way.

______b. Autohitting and autododging: Both are forms of godmodding. One is where you assume your attack hit your target. That is BAD. You cannot assume and keep writing as though your attack not only hit, but also had its intended effect. The other is where your character is so good at not getting hit, they never get hit, That is ALSO BAD. Characters do get hit sometimes. Never ALL the time, but never NEVER, either.

______c. Mind control, mind reading, seeing the future: This…. Is tricky. It has to be done carefully. There’s a give and take. It’s not against the rules, but walk carefully when writing with psychic characters.

______d. Ghosting: This is the one exception. Ghosting is when a player is temporarily controlling another person’s character for out-of-character reasons. The most common example I see is when someone is going out of town or has to log out while many other people are online and a scene is still in full-swing.

__7. Post often. As often as you can, really. And if there’s a reason you’re a slow poster, let us know. Some people just take longer to write than others. Some people share a computer and can’t be online all the time. Most of us have school, time zone differences, and jobs.

__8. But not too often. This makes sense, trust me. Imagine this scenario: Bob, Frank, and Tim are having a conversation. It’s a good conversation, with strong character development going, or there’s a plot being established, or something. After a while, Tim ‘s player logs out, but Tim is still there. Bob and Frank keep talking, as if Tim doesn’t exist. When Tim’s player logs back in, they see four new pages of dialogue and some epic adventure perhaps, between Bob and Frank. And Tim? Tim is still back at the first part of the conversation, completely ignored. This happens too often. If you are the Bob or Frank in that scenario, you need to slow down and wait for Tim to reply.

__9. And if you do get stuck… If you’re waiting on someone to post, and they haven’t posted in a few days, here’s what you do.

______a. First, try to remember if they told you that they wouldn’t be able post for a while.

______b. Then, check to see the last time that person logged in. If they’ve been logging in but just haven’t posted, send them a reminder message. If they haven’t logged in, then ask the Crew that runs the roleplay if it’s alright to ghost.

__10. Above all else, use common sense! I know we all have it, so I don’t expect any problems from you guys!

Under Construction - but these will be the generally accepted rules of magic here, what's doable and what's not.

Types of Magic

Elemental Magic:

White/Light Magic:

Black/Dark Magic:

Gray/Silver/Twilight Magic: No, not that Twilight. This type of magic, no matter what you call it, is a perfectly balanced blend of white and black magic. It's very powerful, and very dangerous. Naturally, this is extremely difficult to achieve, and is only attempted by extremely skilled, and the extremely talented. It is also notably the native magic of the Silverwing race.

General/Neutral Magic: This is your plain, vanilla magic. It has no affiliation, it's just magic... period. A lot of weaker spells are general magic, but like all the other magic types... If you know how to use it, you can REALLY pack a punch.

Beast Magic (name pending): The innate magic a particular species has, the ebb and flow of which, while perhaps possibly reproduced in a spell, cannot occur naturally in any other but the native species. That is to say, fairy magic is not vampire magic is not dragon magic is not elf magic is not human magic. Each race has its own spin on magic - and not just in the cultural sense.

Angel:

Demigod: A demigod is the product of a god and a non-god (not just humans). They have some limited influence over their god parent’s dominion, usually, but sometimes they divert completely. They can also take on the powers of their non-god parent, and (if one or the other is not completely human), they will take some of that parent’s physical characteristics.

Demon: There are many types of demon, so you’ll have to specify what kind on your own. Generally, demons either live(d) in Hell or their parents do(/did). Please stick with this, because there are not many demons who live on Earth. Demons are usually stronger than humans, though not necessarily larger, and most of the time are animalistic. A demon’s attractiveness can often be a hint for his strength: as a general rule, the more attractive the demon, the weaker they are. Of course, there are still some who don’t follow this rule, but most do. Demons are not Dark creatures, just Hell creatures.

God(ess): Gods are a race of virtually immortal beings—virtually because it is possible, though very, very difficult to kill a god. A god is very powerful in many ways, but much less powerful than we give them credit for. Gods cannot do much magic in reality: Gods have control only over their 'dominion'—in other words, a war god can only influence war, not death or love. Likewise, a god of death can only control things relating to death. Of course, this does mean that there will be times these overlap. In that case, it means that any god whose dominion overlays into that situation can influence it. Also, gods do have certain abilities, like teleportation, entering dreams, telepathy, and excellent summoning skills. So a god cannot lift a plane with his or her bare hands (unless he or she is either a god(ess) of strength or airplanes).

Dragon:

Elf (Dark):

Elf (Light):

Fairy:

Fury:

Ghost:

Hanyou: While hanyou are not technically a race of their own, they are common enough in this roleplay that a separate notation is required. Hanyou are the product of a yokai and a human procreating, or just any character that would be a yokai, but has human blood in them that is greater than 1/32. A hanyou, unlike a yokai, does have outward characteristics of their ‘yokai’ form—things like ears, tails, claws, or fur are most common. As with yokai, their power changes with the moon, but when they are at their peak, they are often forced into their yokai form for the duration or that night; when they are at their weakest, they are completely human for the night. (Some hanyou, who have less human blood or whose human blood is magical, can still use some magic on that night.) Note: if a hanyou and a hanyou reproduce, the child will be a hanyou: half human and half yokai. If the parents are two different types of yokai, then they will be, for example, half human, one quarter fish yokai, and one quarter raccoon yokai.

Human: Humans are exactly what you think they are. Here, you can choose if they use magic or don’t, but other than that, they don’t have anything going on that you and I don’t. If you want them to have something special, give us a good reason and it’ll all be cool. Unless specified otherwise, a human can procreate with any race. Humans who have the ability to access their magic also have the ability to learn any sort of magic: light, dark, neutral, etc.

Imp:

Lizardmen:

Nymphs: Nymphs are humanoid creatures that are so intimately related with an element that they can control it and they, in some ways, resemble it. They can learn normal magics as well, but they are less adept than most magical beings. However, their mastery over whatever element they come from is unmatched when they are trained correctly. Nymphs usually can partially become either an animal related to their element, but it depends on the race of nymph. If they can, they usually resemble it. Water nymphs, for example, gain fish tails in water and have a rather scale-esque coloration out of water. Nymphs are generally androgynous, because elements have no gender.

Shapeshifter: A shapeshifter is a being that technically has no natural shape, and even no natural gender. Pure shapeshifters do usually take on the form of a human or animal (often creating one favored shape) more than their ‘natural’ amorphous state of being. Shapeshifters can shift into literally anything, though (for obvious reasons) shifting into gaseous, liquid, or edible objects is considered hazardous most of the time. Shapeshifters can mate with any race due to their abilities. A half-shapeshifter will have the natural state of their non-shifter parent, though they do have the ability to inherit the shifting parent’s powers. Stronger shapeshifters can sometimes even mimic another’s powers.

Silverwing:

Vampire:

Werewolf:

Yokai: Yokai are a branch of demon, technically, but they live on Earth rather than in Hell. Unlike most demons, all yokai can maintain their ‘true’ form for indefinite time periods without Hell’s magical influences. Yokai have lived on Earth for two millenia, approximately, and originally came out in Japan. Yokai cannot die of old age, but they can be killed through conventional means and by disease, so they are not, technically, immortal. Most yokai’s power will fade and grow with the moon—for example, a canine yokai (inuyokai) is at his or her strongest when the moon is full and weakest (though not to the point of human-weak) when the moon is invisible. Yokai do not have outward indications on their ‘human’ form of what their yokai form is.
