I fought my battles with honor,
I let chivalry be my only reason...

Justice's Crusader

User ImageIt didn't take long for Leon to turn in all his possessions that he used to own when he belonged to the Watch. He brought it upon himself not to say anything to the superior who saved him, his best friend and most steadfast healer, or even the shady assassin that he always accused of being one arrow short of a quiver. They probably all knew what happened, by the way he walked in with a sorrowful expression, his insignia missing and nothing proud or noble about the way he walked. Leon was defeated, his career and life destroyed by the very laws the he once believed in so fondly. Leon Vatara gave his friends a sorrowful wave, not expecting them to even speak to him anymore. It's not like he deserved it.

He and Anri, now in plain clothes made their way towards a place where all men and woman could dump their sorrows. Now he understood, he thought as he made his way closer, why Ghis found it an obligation. There was much of life to be sorrowful about, Leon was just once again, too young and too naive to experience it. Now he'd experienced harsh truth in the world. He realized that there was no glory anywhere, no justice to be had, that no matter which world he'd been dropped off to, the ways of chivalry and honor were just dead. Dead, buried, and to never ever rise again.

Leaving Anri outside, Leon gave his steed a brief hug before he entered the tavern, the Duke's Head. He sat on one of the stools, looking particularly distressed over the most recent bad hand that life had dealt him. "Miss Helen..." muttered the former knight trying his best to hide the fact that he was more down than a couple of thieves on one of his and Chickenwire's watches. "Gimme a couple of shots of yer best sippin' liquor, the kind that gives ya yer eyesight back in two days, guaranteed." He ordered. Just that order alone was enough to not hide the fact that the young man was not in good spirits, and he had doubts he ever would be in the mood for happiness after everything that had happened. One man's word took everything from him, and there was nothing he could do about it. All around Eyris, this feeling of low morale and hopelessness was probably going to spread, with the Guild members and the Watch standing trial...

User Image"Oy! Don't spill grubs with your mouth open, you pig!" Rajin yelled at one of Helen's customers as he swept the floor to clean the mess. There were cottons up his nose, making his voice sounded a bit nasal. But even with the cottons up his nose, he could still smell and taste that awful scent of Alex's cologne from the broom. Augh! Maybe he should have brought Helen another broom and get rid of the smelly one.

The sloppy customer was upset by the tiger's comment and thought about getting back at him. But when he took a good look at Rajin, he decided not to and apologized. It would be better not to mess with a laguz.

While the tiger swept the floor, he heard someone ordered Helen a couple of shots of alcohol. This made the tiger scowled. Great, another drunkard to enter the bar. He hoped that the fellow wouldn't make a scene like the last drunkard that entered. The last time the drunk idiot entered the tavern, he was causing the scene, forcing the tiger to kick his a** out. Well, time to see what type of idiot would the drunkard be.

Turning around, he saw it was the lieutenant he ran into earlier from one of the brawls fight. s**t! It's the Watch! Rajin thought surprisingly when he recognized Leon. He quickly turned around and tried to head toward the kitchen. He needed to get out or else the lieutenant would arrest him for having a bar fight with one of his watchmen.

But before he could enter the kitchen, the chef opened the door, grabbed the broom from Rajin's hand, and shoved the plate of food to him, telling him to serve to the customer that was right next to Leon. The tiger cursed. Not good. This was not what the tiger had in mind.

Rajin tried to protest of serving, but the chef held up the broom, telling him to serve it. Annoyed by the chef's antic, the tiger headed toward where the lieutenant was. Okay, all he had to do was hand the grub to the customer and get the hell out of here. That way, he wouldn't be caught for having the fight with the Watch Captain months ago.

The tiger set the food to the customers, telling him of the price of the food and tried to get away. But when he took a glace at the liuetenant's face, he noticed something that he would never saw in someone of authority. That fellow.... looked like he got dumped in a pile of s**t. Not only that, but he wasn't even in his uniform either. Was that guy on his day off? Maybe he was, but what got him down? Could it be someone close to him died or he got dumped by his girlfriend? Whatever it was, it was none of his business.

But when he looked at the drink the lieutenant ordered, the tiger frowned. The drink he ordered was one of the best drinks in the tavern. However, it was not enough to satisfied a downer.

Just when Leon could drink his order, the tiger grabbed it and gulped it. Before Leon could do or say anything, Rajin placed the cup down and looked at Leon. "Hey buddy, if you're trying to drown your sorrows, you need to order a really strong drink to knock yourself out."

User ImageLeon recognized the tiger, as one of the many, many who got in a bar fight with Ghis. He sighed, remembering all those times where Charice said to go easy on her Captain, because he had a habit that any man could develop, and he had his reasons for indulging in booze. It was for that reason alone that Rajin hadn't been high on Leon's priority list when it came to arrests, because there were far more important people to catch than a drunken brawler back when he was still on the job. He sighed.

The young man would have never imagined he'd be here in this tavern, even thinking about drowning his sorrows. The brunette looked up at Rajin in the face at last when he said that Leon would need something stronger if he wanted to forget everything. "It's no use anyway... I ain't never gonna forget this... I just wish the pain was a lil'... easier, ya know?" he said, shaking his head. "I jus' wonder if ya know how it feels to go an' lose everythin' that ya ever held close."

He then curled up a fist, and slammed it on the bar's surface. It actually kind of hurt, just because he hit it so hard in his anger. "If I'd have just listened to orders, listened to reason and asked a little bit of questions, then I wouldn't even be here right now! I'd still be an officer an' a gentleman, not some jobless loser without a rank... without his armor... without his weapon..." He finally let his head sink down onto the bar's surface, trying to hide as best he could that tears were streaming down his face. "I wouldn't be someone without... a... cause..." he muttered between very low, but noticeable sniffles.

When the man from "the watch" had gotten stripped of his title and stormed out, Rahkain followed. Having gotten extremely bored with a trial for people he didn't know, following the man just seemed... more interesting. Down the street he went, and into a tavern.
Booze! Perfect!, he thought, smiling to himself. Much more interesting than a stuffy trial.
He sat down at the bar and took out some coins. The man he had followed for almost no reason, was talking about what happened, of course, trying to drown his sorrows in alcohol.
And talking to a laguz. Being from Mordache, he hadn't seen very many laguz before. As a matter of fact, practically none. They were looked down upon, but to Rahkain they were stunning... Very interesting. Creature and man at the same time! Beastman! he thought, grinning.
He took a chair closer... and a chair closer...
"You're a tiger." He said. Immediately, he felt he had interrupted rudely... And said something stupid.

User ImageThe tiger arched his eyebrow as the lieutenant started his sob story. What the hell that guy was talking about? He had no idea what was that guy's problem since the fellow didn't tell him what it was. But based from what he said about not wanting to forget and wanting the pain to be easier, it sounded like he got dumped by his woman badly. Man, this guy was a wimp. No wonder he couldn't hold his date well.

But before he could tell the wimp to man up, the brunet asked him did he know how it felt to lose everything so dearly to him. This made the tiger shut his mouth. Yeah, he did know how it felt to lose everything he held dearly. It happened to him when he was in Tellius as a cub. Man, it was suck to have that feel. It took him nearly two months to get over it.

"Yeah, I know how that feel." Rajin replied as he took the cottons out of his nose and later swept his hair back away from his face. "It sucks to-"

A sudden bang on the bar made the tiger jumped. Damnit! That scared the crap out of him. Sure, he understood that the fellow was upset, but damnit, his ears were quite sensitive to loud noise. Was that guy planning to start a bar fight with his anger?

"Hey man, calm down. You don't want to cause a scene in this place." Rajin tried to soothe the beorc. Man, were beorc that fickle to change their emotion? And he thought that beorc women on PMS were the fickle ones.

Just then he heard what was the man's problem. This guy... He was sobbing over work? This guy was upset over a mistake he made at the job? Sheesh, that was a waste to cry over and tried to get drunk. This guy was acting like his job was his life. And now that he was out of it, he started acting like a baby and thought the world had come to an end. Damn, this made Rajin wished it was a girl problem. At least that was something to cry about than that.

"Sheesh man, pull yourself together." Rajin said as he went to grab the cloth from behind the bar counter. He then handed the cloth to Leon. "Just because you lost a job, it doesn't mean it's the end of the world. There are many jobs out there for you to get it. No use crying over spilled milk."

Ah Rajin.... If only he knew how important loyalty and morality of the knight code were to a soldier... It was too bad he didn't.

Just then, his ears twitched when he heard another voice. Lifting his head up, Rajin saw a man who sitting next to Leon. Based from what that gruff guy was saying, it sounded like he had never seen a laguz before. Rajin arched his brow.

"Yeah, I'm a tiger. Is there a problem with that?"
PostPosted: Sat Aug 28, 2010 6:38 pm

The young man watched the sobbing man for a second before looking back at the Tiger.
"It's uh... It's cool. You're a tiger. That's cool." He said dumbly. Man why can't I talk to this guy? He thought. "I uh.. I come from a place that doesn't have a lot of suuuu--- Llllllaguz. Laguz. Haven't really seen you up close, you know." He turned his attention back to the sobbing man once more and was silent for a moment.
Get it together or he'll think you're an idiot.
"Uh... That guy was part of some kind of watch. He just got fired by an ugly old man..." he said quietly, attempting conversation. "Hey," He said a little louder, directing his speech at them both. "I got a pack of cards. How about we play a game or something? Ya know... Get smashed, gamble a bit? Take your mind offa things." He took a pack of cards from his coat and held it out, grinning in a friendly manner.
Remembering that the Laguz seemed to be cleaning up, he addressed him directly once more. "Er... You too, If you're not still working."

User ImageNow this was something the tiger didn't expect. Although Rajin had come among some who found it interesting about his race, he never expected someone who never came from his world and knew about the true name of his race. They would usually say shape shifters or odd names such as catgirl or tigerman. Well, at least it wasn't a hateful name such as sub-human. Man, he would really tear someone up if that word was utter.

"Heh, really?" Rajin smirked. "And where do you come from?"

The tiger admitted that he never met that beorc before. He could tell that the guy wasn't from his world after the way the man expressed. Could that man really be from this world or from another world? It was sure hard to tell after running into those who weren't from this continent itself.

Rajin's smirk went back to frown as the guy informed him about what happened to the brunette. Well, of course the fellow got fired from his job. That brunette had already said it himself. But by an ugly old man? Now that was something he didn't knew. The tiger knew fully well that the brunette's boss was the captain that he had a bar brawl fight months ago. He thought that drunken captain was the one who fired him. But an ugly old man? Who the hell could it be? Could it be that old goat who had moved into Eyris weeks ago? What was his name? Ragdoll or something liked that.

He knew quite well that the old goat was the adviser to the king. But to hear that the brunette got fired from Ravioli adviser? Man, how much power did that b*****d had? Although this was none of his business, the tiger couldn't help but felt creep out. There was something weird and vile going on in Eyris and he didn't like that feeling at all.

It was then that his ears suddenly perked at the words the gruffy fellow spoke. Game? Drink? Sounded like his kind of fun.

"Sir, I like your way of getting distracted from shitty drama." Rajin let out a smirk again. Oh, and the tiger was invited to join too? Hell yeah, he would join. There was no way he would- What was this? If he wasn't working?

"Psh! No need to worry about my work!" The tiger waved his hand. "My work is being hold for a moment. Something about needing to be checked or something. I was just helping Ma here to get her place steady. This tavern used to be quiet until that damn Hawk King Tibarn came and made this place popular."

"So, what game are we playing? Black jack? Poker? Deuce? By the way, I'm Rajin Cyphers." Rajin introduced himself as he raised his hand to shake the fellow. It was then he heard a sniffle from the brunette. Was that guy still crying about his job? Damn, he needed to lighten up.

"Hey, you need to join in too, man." Rajin told Leon as he wrapped his arm over the ex-lieutenant's shoulder. "You can't just sit here, crying like a baby. So what if you lose your job? It's not like your life is over now."

If this fellow won't lighten up, then that fellow would get on the tiger's nerve. After all, he didn't want his fun to be ruined by a crybaby.

"And where do you come from?" The tiger had asked.
Uh-oh. Where did Rahkain come from? Mordache.
What happened the last time he told someone where he was from? Someone screamed he was evil.
Why shouldn't he want the Laguz to think he was evil?
Simple. Very simple. Laguz have claws.
The young man grinned nervously for a moment. It wasn't really in his nature to lie. His mother had brought him up better than that.
"I... Uhh..." He glanced around. "I'm actually from pretty far away from here," he remarked truthfully.
Fortunately, the Laguz changed the subject. He said he wasn't working, which was good. It meant they could play.
Then he said something that piqued Rahkain's interest.
"This tavern used to be quiet until that damn Hawk King Tibarn came and made this place popular."
"There's a Hawk King? Is he a laguz too? That's... Cool! So, tell me, Does this king have wings?" His eyes widened at the thought. People with wings! Men dream of flying...
The Laguz introduced himself. "We could play any of those. I'm Rahkain Grimword by the way."
The Laguz turned to the crying man and attempted to console him...
Rahkain watched the Beastman with wonder.

User ImageThe young man heard the Laguz remark on how losing his profession was not the end of the world the first time. Yes, he knew that getting kicked out of the Watch wasn't the end of his life, and yet, it felt like, in all respects, that his life was ruined, so what was the point of the rest of it? Get another profession, Rajin said... "Look, it's not as easy as tha'! Me an' Anri... we ran from our homeland, 'cuz we both hated it there! All the knights there knew no honor! And then I come here, thinkin' it would be different... I was gonna be the Hero of Eyris when I became Captain and Anri was gonna be there with me through it all, it was my plan, I planned it!" The black-clad man exclaimed, already drying the tiny bit of tear streams that were coming from his eyes.

He hadn't taken notice of Rahkain really, not even when he conversed with the Tiger that was luckily off his back for just a moment. But then, the question came. Was he in the mood for a game? Now that he thought of it, a bit of cards might not be a bad idea. It didn't solve anything, it didn't give him his knighthood, his pride, his honor, or his livelihood back, but it would at least fill a void that he felt was missing. Camaraderie. A feeling that he belonged, no matter if he'd hit rock bottom or otherwise.

He was able to look up at Rahkain and Rajin, and take a seat across from each of them. "I may not be of the knighthood anymore, but... I'm still Leon Vatara. It's a pleasure." He said, nodding to the two gentlemen. He still had his manners about him, even when the times were tough. "I'm in, by the way. What are we playin'? With all due respect, I ain't gonna be bettin' the last of my pay, but I've still got..." he went through his pockets. "This. Free meal ticket to any of the restaurants in town. I know how to cook my own food, so I dun' need it any."

User Image"I may not be one of the knighthood anymore, but... I'm still Leon Vatara. It's a pleasure. I'm in, by the way."

The tiger couldn't help but grinned as he playfully punched the ex-lieutenant. The brunette would feel the pain, but it won't leave a bruise on him. "That's the spirits! You don't need a stinking job to tell you who you are! You'll just need to be a man to show who the hell you are."

Just then the gruff man asked him questions about the Hawk King. Was Tibarn a laguz? Did he have wings? Of course, that damn bird had wings! Why the hell would he be called the Hawk King? It would be very obvious to figure out what the hell he was by that title of his.

"Yeah, the b*****d is in this town. From what I heard, the damn bird is living off on his woman's money, playing babysitter with his daughter. Psh! How irony that he could handle his own little island and yet, he couldn't hold a damn job here. But enough about that damn bird, let's play some game."

Rajin called out the bartender to serve them some booze and had the bill placed on his tab. It won't be a fun without alcohol to play some cards. Just as Rajin settled himself to play cards with them, Leon announced that he won't place a bet in the game.

"What? Are you out of your ******** mind? Betting is what makes the game more interesting!" Rajin exclaimed. But when he heard that it was Leon’s last paycheck, he suddenly understood. Man, it sucked to be nearly poor. You had to find random and odd jobs just to stay in the living expense. Damn, if only the job wasn’t minimal on payment. Maybe the ex-lieutenant had something else that would interest them.

Rahkain grinned as the previously sobbing man introduced himself and said he would join the game. "Leon Vatara. Great to meet you!" He responded, scooting closer to the table and placing the deck of cards on the top. "How about some poker, then?"
He listened intently as the Tiger-man talked about "Tibarn". Why was he so angry about him, again? Leading some kind of little island? What kind of job was it that he held?
It seemed that Laguz often held jobs in this place. It was a nice change of pace. As he was raised, he should have hated the laguz. The 'sub-humans' everybody in his hometown called them. But he couldn't help being fascinated.
He kills beasts for a living. He's used to things trying to eat him. But Laguz are different. They aren't savage as everybody else says. They're just... different. He wanted to understand more about them. Well... It seemed he made his first couple of friends in this new place.
The bartender brought drinks. Rahkain took one gratefully. Drinks were on the Laguz, it seemed. "Thanks! I can handle the refills, though. I still have some money."
Leon had said he would bet a meal ticket. Food is always good. "Well, Leon, since you're starting a different life starting today, let's see if you can turn your luck around! We'll start with poker, then. I'll deal to start. Place in whatever you got to bet."

User Image"Oy, what were ya expectin'? At least I ain't wagerin' fools gold now!" Leon replied, returning the playful punch that he was given earlier. Hopefully he wouldn't have to explain that "fool's gold" was the Watch term for counterfeit money. Either way, he grinned, slightly. "Enough o' this chatter now, let's play!" He exclaimed. Oddly, he never remembered being this eager to engage in a habit of gambling. Then again, it was just one time, just one night, right? He could handle it and not get addicted. Leon was strong enough not to make this a habit. If he was going out as far as long his knight's honor and everything, he might as well "go out with a bang" so to say. He might as well enjoy a night like this while he still could.

Whatever hand was dealt, it was of high hopes that he'd be dealt better cards than the events of his life. Really Leon Vatara never imagined himself to be in a position where he could not raise his weapon to defend those who needed it the most. From what rumors he listened to flying around the tavern, he could hear that he was not the only one who had been dealt a terrible fate by that... old geezer. Just who did he think he was, anyway?!

But enough of that. Leon didn't escape Archanea lamenting the fact that he hated what his fellow soldiers did in those times. He didn't rise in the ranks making up excuses as to why he didn't have to do anything. The former lieutenant had worked hard to get where he was, and it would take a little more of that if he was going to keep going somewhere, anywhere but here, at the very bottom. Just a night of games and light liquor would clear his mind of his problems completely, and then, only then would he know how he was going to go forward.

User ImageAfter twenty five rounds of Poker, everything was going well. Some the tiger had lost. Some he had won. He was even surprised that he rounded up the same hand as Rahkain. Talked about odd luck on that.

Not only was he having a fun time playing poker and betting, but he was happy to have drinks coming in too. Man, talked about bringing luck to the game. It was too bad that he didn't have enough money to continue gambling.

"Man, I'm fold." Rajin announced as he tossed his cards at the table. As much as he want to gamble, he knew his limit to stop. After all, he didn't have enough money to support him.

He looked back at Leon to see how well the fellow was. From what he saw, it seemed that the lad was doing quite well. That was good to see. Why bothered moping in the bar when you could have buddies to cheer up and have fun? ... Wait, did Leon have any buddies to drink with? Because if he didn't, then man, what a loser he was. Speaking of loser...

"Yo Leon, I don't want to drag you down, but I'm curious why you got fired." Rajin spoke out as he took a gulp of his drink. "I mean man, talking about honor, hero, and s**t, I don't see what got you fired from your job."

User ImageThe drinks, the games, the laughter and the festivities in general went on and on. Leon couldn't help but get a little... tipsy after he had a few. Much to his embarrassment, he hiccuped. What a non-gentleman gesture to do! Still, that didn't stop him from hearing Rajin's question, nor did it stop him from answering. "Jus'... misunderstood orders is all. Thought a village was bein' ransacked an everythin'... so I struck first like a moron." The young man said, not sounding at all ashamed about what he did at all. No, he was far too under the influence to think of shame.

He then held up his fist, lightly hitting the table (not enough to cause a sound) in the motion of a gavel. "Then th' ol' man came an' said "ya gotta turn yer badge in, matey, yer bein' stripped of yer title an' order'd to turn yer weapons in." Explained Leon, recalling the events that felt like they were so long ago, but they were still in the same day, as far as he remembered. "So I tol' 'im... I dun' wanna serve a scallywag like ya anyway sir... I'm... OUTTA HERE." Again, another hiccup came. Anyone who knew Leon (or maybe even those who didn't) just knew he was completely drunk right now.

Here he was, pouring all his feelings out on a drinking table, where people would probably forget them anyway. Maybe that's why he chose to do it, or maybe just all his restraints, all his mind's cues on "how far was too far" were just thrown out the window since... really, why not? There was no more need to hold back. There was no more reason to go and dress up his speech in pretty words or polite anecdotes. There was nobody left to please anymore.
