The day was perfect and sunny and warm and anyone with the right amount of sense in their head knew that there was a picnic that needed to be done, and even though Van and Ana still weren't getting along smoothly, the 4-eyed teen had insisted that the knife-wielder come along on her journey. There was even a basket with a little checkered blanket tucked under Ana's arm and a dark scowl upon her lips.
For the two, the biggest problem was that neither of them were cooks or chefs or anything of the sort and they really lived mostly on visiting various restaurants for their stomach-needs. And thus they were now on their way to one of the best smelling bakeries the two could think of. "These Buns" was famous in the area for it's plush bread and great ability to create sandwiches out of said breads.
"Why don't you go in while I wait here?" Ana said, plunking herself down on one of the benches in the shade and giving a meaningful look to Van about just how long she had before Ana gave up waiting. Always on the move that one. But Vanyel didn't seem to be bothered and she pushed her way into the semi-crowded store with the sound of a little bell welcoming her in.

It had been a bit of a rough week for the young Scent, and so having been given the freedom to go out and enjoy a day as nice as this one was something Ilex wasn't going to squander. Her Guardian, Mirra, had been working a bit of over-time lately and hadn't had much time to take Ilex out often as she would have liked. But today there had been a bit of extra spending money, so Mirra gave her permission to go out as long as she didn't stray too far from their home, figuring the young Scent would enjoy the sunshine and a lunch out. As much as the older woman hated the idea of the child being out there alone, she knew that Ilex was going a bit stir crazy being kept inside all the time while she was off working.
So it was here in the bakery that Ilex found herself after about an hour of exploring the area around their home... feeling the familiar tummy rumbles signaling it was close to lunch time for her. All the smells from the bread and other various food items were making her mouth water just a little and press her nose to the glass just a bit more. She'd never been out like this before alone, and with the variety of items, it was a bit daunting when trying to make the most of her money while wanting at least one of everything she saw.
It was the sound of the little bell that snapped Ilex out of her food induced day-dreams and glanced over at the new comer, her usual curiosity kicking back in again. The bright coloring of her clothing was what drew her attention at first, thinking that it looked like some of the orange butterflies she had seen floating around a bunch of flowers last time she'd escaped the apartment. She realized after a few moments that she had been staring and stepped off to the side, still not sure what she wanted to eat and didn't want to get in the pretty lady's way.

Vanyel stopped and blinked at the sight of the girl in the Christmas attire, even though it was so very clearly not close to Christmas time, what with the heat pouring from the sun at the moment. A rather sinking suspicion had her thinking it was yet another scent-baby that she was running across. In the world of normality, it was usually the scents that were extravagantly dressed, Vanyel included in her orange-mage get-up. But hey, at least she could actually do mage-like tricks!
"What are you doing? Where's your mom or dad?" Van smiled as she stepped over to the girl staring hungrily into the display of treats. Usually sweet natured to begin with, the teen was doing her best to be exceptionally gentle in her questioning demeanor. Thought of runaways and homeless children crossed through her mind, but she decided not to worry unduly without the girl telling her own story. Besides, if there was anything she couldn't handle, Ana was always just outside and she could help out where needed.

Ilex glanced up at her when spoken to, looking as if deep in thought as she took the time to wonder if she even had a mother or father besides Mirra. As far as she knew, her Guardian Mirra was the closest thing she had to a mother, even though working kept her busy, she did try to make sure Ilex was cared for. "I don't think I have a father or a mother... but there is someone who is like my mom who I live with. She has been really busy working, and told me if I stayed close to home, I could go play outside. But then I got hungry, so I came in here to try and get something for lunch with some spending money she gave me." she replied very matter of fact like, giving a slight nod of the head for emphasis. Mirra took care of her the best she could, but because of Ilex getting a bit stir-crazy being inside, they had ended up butting heads lately more often than the Guardian would have liked. So... as much as she didn't like the idea... it was better to grant the young one a little bit of freedom and try to keep a bit of peace in the house.

Vanyel frowned at the girl before her before shaking her head. Certainly the citrus girl knew the feeling of having a rather distant guardian. At least the new one seemed to have less work ethic, but as a teen Van didn't feel that the extra adult presence in her life was as much of a positive as it would have been when she was a girl. It was also slightly worrying that Ilex did not view Mirra as her actual mother, but simply a guardian. Every child should feel like they have a parent...
"I have an idea," Van said with a grin, holding out her hand towards the girl, "Why don't you come out to eat lunch with my guardian and I? We are going on a picnic and have lots of good fruits and veggies and drinks. we just came here to buy some sandwiches. You should bring your sandwich and eat with us." Certainly the trio would stay close to the area so Ilex didn't feel worried, and this way she could have some company. The teen was slightly nervous about the young girl simply being on her own the whole time...

Ilex eyed the older girl curiously for a few moments when Vanyel reached out her hand towards her. She certainly didn't seem like all those creepy strangers that Mirra had warned her about staying away from and some speech about not taking candy or getting into a black vehicle... wherever that was coming from she'd had no idea. It couldn't have been very good candy if it came from a dark, moving object since no one would be able to see all the pretty colors... so it just made sense that all the best candy came from the shops that had everything sitting out like a rainbow of deliciousness.
After a few moments though she gave in and reached up to take Vanyel's hand, her smile getting a little bigger at the prospect of getting to have a picnic with, what she considered, a new friend. She'd found out earlier when playing with some kids in the park that most kids had parents and not guardians. So it made her curious to see if maybe this new person was like herself when the invitation had been made and the mention of a guardian came up. "Thank you very much, that sounds like fun and you seem very nice, so I'm sure it would be ok. Though... I don't know what I want to eat. Everything looks really yummy so it's hard to pick just one." Ilex replied before turning her head back towards the display cases and counter tops showing off the various food items for sale.
Secretly she was relieved at not having to spend the whole day alone, since it had made her feel a bit lonely while watching the other children leave the park with their families. It was all fine and dandy to spend time without anyone else, but even though they had been butting heads, the young Scent had been thinking of Mirra most of the time. Wishing that she didn't have to work so much so they could have family time too...

Vanyel, more familiar with being alone than she would like to have admitted, grinned brightly as the girl slipped her hand into the offered one. Certainly if the orange-haired teen had been attempting a robbery of the girl's innocence she'd have offered just the sort of sweets Ilex's guardian had warned her about (though Van wouldn't have been caught dead driving around in some big black hulking van!) Fruits and veggies were hardly the magical words to coerce a child to spend the day with you unless there was little more offered than some good old fashioned company-keeping.
"Good point! They all look really yummy!" Van said with an exaggerated frown, staring down the line of sandwiches as if she were a drill sergeant about to tell them all to do a bunch of push ups! "The BLT looks really appetizing, but the ham and mozzarella looks like it would just melt in your mouth!" The teen heaved a sigh of discontent before straightening out of her crouch and tilting her head to the side a bit to think.
Slowly an idea came upon her and as the idea grew, so too did the smile upon her lips. "What if we each bought two sandwiches and get them all cut in half. Then we can each have a little sample of everything and we can take the left overs home for a snack or maybe for lunch tomorrow if the weather is too bad to go out. What do you think of that?" she asked, attempting to appeal to the girl's indecisiveness to make up for her own inability to choose just a single thing to nibble upon. Van couldn't help it, she was just a sampler!
