Yeah, that did seem to have some similarities to .hack, but there's only yay so many ways to portray MMOs, and it looked kind of like a Bee Train production anyway, so...

Baka and Test is essentially about a special school where people get 'avatars' they can use in battle with their strengths based on subjects like math, phys-ed, ect. An idiot is the main character. Chars can take tests to boost their power (grades=powerlvls) but if they're defeated in combat, they have to take special remedial courses with the hard-core a*****e teacher. Students are divided by grades into classes so class F=idiots, classA= geniuses. A class can challenge any other to a battle and if the lower class wind, they can take the higher class' rooms......blatant rip-offs include a NGE episode and a character who has the ability to order people to do anything with a mysterious power and a glowing red eye with wacky symbol a'la Code Geass....I think there were Naruto and Bleach rips too, but I don't remember.....it all plays out like a big game though...
(blame it on the brilliant people who designed his Xth form)

There is a difference between ripoffs and homage eps.
And then there's Excel Saga, Abenobashi, etc. where every ep is a different theme.
Avatars: Persona series?

(blame it on the brilliant people who designed his Xth form)Oh yeahhhhh! I read the manga! And the people in the F-Class were trying to defeat the A-Class so that they could have better conditions in their classrooms! Wasn't the idiot the main character because his avatar fighting thing had a special power? (It could react with real world stuff, right?)

As previously stated, there is a fine (and often blurred) line when it comes to plagiarism & parody. The difference is claim and those that know who claim it.
Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu (BakaTest) - Parody. Using small referenences from other anime (Kouta using Geass, for example. No one called it Geass, and it looks different from the real thing.) Groups know it's already popular and famous world-wide. So do their fans. That's why it's fine for a scene to panel over and in the very corner there's a plush of Totoro. Everyone knows him, everyone knows how created him, no one would try to claim ownership. Also see Pani Poni Dash, Excel Saga, Duel Masters, and Bobobo Bo-Bobobo.
vs.
Nick Simmons' Incarnate - Plagiarism (Though being investigated). Many panels have been seen to be nearly exact replicas of those found in the manga Bleach. There have also been claims of using dialouge and character designs from other series. Also see Rin Yoshii's Switch and Naka Gomura's Megabaka.
Or, let me put it this way, it's sort of when an anime will have 'WacDonalds' or (For Welcome to the NHK's sake) 'Ultimate Fantasy.' They're not exactly the same name as what we know they're referencing at. 'Cause they're smart and don't want to be sued.
8| So.. yeah.. that's all I have to say about this. And I would have said 'homage' but my favorite quote won't let me :3 L'hommage is just French for plagiarism.
---
On a positive note, I didn't know one of my favorite voice actors did work for NHK :] I might have to watch it from the beginning.
