Ki let out a sigh. This was no fun at all. Agni, one of Ki's three brothers, left a much to obvious trail to follow. Tracking him was way easier than it should have been. But that was Agni, never thinking right. With another sign, Ki landed gracefully on the rocky mountain side. He was extremely bored. His family and his tribe have ceased to entertain him.

Bright red eyes scanned the rocky mountain side for any sign of entertainment. Perhaps he would be lucky and find an interesting fox mingle with. Though Ki doubted there would be any foxes out here that were more interesting than the ones back home. Though, it was still worth a try. Any company at all would be more fun than tracking his delinquent brother. At least if he found a normal fox, he could mess with them.

Aruna hadn't seen hide or tail of her half-brother Caelan since she had started searching for him in that tribe he was supposedly joining. The fire burning on her ear dimmed as she thought about leaving her mother and the tribe of snow. It wouldn't have worked out. Now, though, she was alone, and travelling along a random mountain. Her 'search' was much more like aimless wanderings now.

As she climbed, she noticed the temperature slowly rise. Heat never bothered her much, but she couldn't pretend that it wasn't perplexing. Perhaps a 'Daeva was near? She could definitely tell someone was nearby... Of it's own accord, her fire burned brighter at the thought. It had been a while since she had been around another fox, and she had never met a 'Daeva before.

As he sniffed the air, Ki feared that his sense of smell wasn't up to par anymore. For the first time in a long time, a confused look made its way to Ki's face. How odd. He could smell and hear a fox not to far from his location yet he also picked up the smell of smoke. If he remembered correctly, 'Daeva's were the only ones capable of producing fire and smoke. But this newcomer did not have the smell of a 'Daeva... Just a normal fox... with smoke.

Eager to find the intriguing fox, Ki dove off his perch on the side of the mountain and landed easily in front of the one he sought. Odd indeed. His senses never failed. Standing before him was indeed a normal fox producing a flame. Ki had always hated how normal foxes gawked at his flaming paws yet here he was gawking at some vixens flaming ear. How was it possible for her to produce her own fire? Perhaps there were foxes outside his tribe that were interesting.

A smile spread across Ki's features. "Greetings, Stranger."

As if on cue, the Daeva in question appeared flying over a nearby ridge. The large, winged form landed right in front of her. Red flames, somehow far more different from her own, licked at his white paws. Her eyes were also attracted to the bat-like wings. Aruna had never seen any being like him. She hardly noticed him staring at her, she was doing the same. His voice broke the silence, and snapped her back to reality.

"Hello there," Aruna said, nodding slightly in greeting. She wondered if he was just as perplexed by her existance as she was with his. Then again, she didn't think that she was too strange. After all, her father could also produce a bit of fire on his tail. And the rest of her was completely normal. 'Being a Daeva, however, must be much more interesting,' Aruna thought. 'Flying seems fun, and his fire...' She didn't know exactly how to describe it, but it drew her in as if she were a moth.

"Tell me, Little One," Ki said as he approached and circled the flaming vixen, "How does one go about producing fire without being 'Daeva breed?" Had he discovered a new race of foxes? Or simply a fox who was the product of an interesting blood line. Ki had to admit to himself that it was nice to see a normal vixen... Well, somewhat normal vixen, who was not afraid of his fire.

Ki didn't think it was possible to count the number of times he and his brothers were scolded for singeing or slightly burning normal foxes. They couldn't handle the fire, couldn't handle the heat. Yet this vixen had fire of her own and she seemed to be just as interested in his fire as he was hers. What an interesting find he had made. For a moment, Ki thought about snatching the vixen up and taking her back to his family, just to show them what he had found. But, that would probably not go over well and was not a wise decision to make.

The 'Daeva drew himself away from his thoughts and back to the vixen at hand.

Little one? She was slightly insulted, but decided it best not to show it. Angering the large, flying, flaming being didn't seem like the best method at the moment. Aruna watched as the 'Daeva began walking around her. Her eyes followed him out of caution. She was sure most other foxes would be worried, but somehow couldn't bring herself to care. She watched as his paws left scorch marks on the ground he walked on. The flames were surrounding her now, and Aruna became rather fond of the heat. Other foxes probably wouldn't be able to bear it.

"My name is Aruna," she began, "and my father's tail burns as well, but I never figured out why, I'm never with him. My siblings and mother aren't like this, though." Aruna wondered idly how 'Daeva's became what they were today, but that was probably a question no one but the Modideities themselves could answer.

How interesting. Her father's tail burned? And he passed it down to her ear? But only her? Hm... She was a special vixen, yes, and Ki loved special things. There was no doubt that she had managed to catch his interest. She didn't seem to have the temperment of a 'Daeva which was good but she didn't seem to mind the heat that either of their fires caused. That was a quality that he had been looking for.

"Aruna." He said her name out loud, testing to see how it felt. "I think its a shame you're never with your father. Fire deserves to be among fire, where it is understood." Ki looked her directly in the eyes as he stated the last part. He knew what it was like to have fire. He knew how to control it, how to stand it. Those who had fire, weren't afraid of fire. And it was very rare to meet a normal fox who wasn't afraid of fire.

Aruna caught Ki’s gaze and returned it with a questioning look of her own. Was this ‘Daeva suggesting what she thought he was? Needless to say she was intrigued. “I believe understand your meaning,” she began finally. “In isolation, a flame is weak, and the fire dies out quickly.” Still, what exactly was Ki trying to say? That they become friends? Travel buddies? Or more?

She didn’t say anything else for the moment, instead waiting for him to elaborate, if ever he would. Deciding to glance away from the ‘Daeva, she noticed that the flames had died away around her, leaving a circle of burnt rock.

Ki could see that the vixen was a bit confused. She was having trouble figuring out his meaning. Perfect. He loved to keep foxes guessing. The way others formulated answers was so interesting to him. And if anything was certain about Aruna, it was that he interested her.

"Exactly." Ki said as he sat and smiled, almost mischeviously, at her. "For a flame to flourish and reach it needs to be near a source of heat. Being separated from your Father and others that have fire, I fear that you are lacking a heat source." Ki couldn't help but wonder how well the vixen could handle fire and heat. She didn't seem to mind him. What about her temperment? Would she enjoy playing mind games, messing with others, or was she more of a laid back, not caring type? Ki finally decided, he simply wanted to know if she was a contained flame, or a wild fire.

"I suppose you could say that," Aruna said, compelled to return the slight smile of her own. Admittedly, she was enjoying the bizzare situation. Meeting Ki is certainly an experience she'll remember, and besides being a 'Daeva, he seemed like an all-around interesting character. If a little confusing. She didn't exactly mind, but still...

"What do you believe would be the best remedy to the situation, then?" She asked, looking up at him expectantly. "Past knowing my father, and I hardly call it knowing, the only fox who would be able to provide another heat source would be you. Would that be what you're suggesting?"

The large 'Daeva continued to observe the smaller vixen, almost hoping that if he looked her over enough, he would be able to figure her out. Of course, he knew there was more to figuring out a fox than simple appearances but there was a chance that her outward reactions would give him a glimpse into her mind.

"Heh." Ki almost snickered. "There are plenty of other 'Daeva's aside from myself who could provide you with a heat source. And since your father and you both burn with a flame, who's to say there are not other foxes out there with the same gift?" He couldn't help but the smirk that played on his features. "I suggested nothing of myself." Ki raised his eyebrows as he folded his wings into himself and waited for Aruna's reply.
PostPosted: Sun Oct 10, 2010 11:09 am

"Be that as it may," Aruna started, "'Daeva's and foxes such as myself are, for obvious reasons, quite rare. After you, who's to say I'll ever find another one? And should they particularly dislike me, for one reason or another, I would have to begin my search over again.

"Also, since I've always been seperate from my father," she continued, her mind racing, "I've been without a heat source for quite some time. Given that a flame dies without it, I must say I don't have much time left - certainly not enough to search for another fox like myself, or another 'Daeva." Aruna was quite surprised at her own audacity, but didn't think too much about it at the moment.

"You may not have directly suggested yourself, but I see no other reasonable alternative," she added. "Either you could provide me with a heat source, or you could temporarily do so until I find I suitable, permanent replacement." Technically he could also simply fly away and forget about her, but it wasn't necessary that she point that out. She didn't exactly want Ki to leave; he was entertaining.

What a bold vixen to say such things. Most vixens would have fled by now in either fear or annoyance, but here was Aruna, telling him he could provide her with a heat source. Ki found it all highly amusing. This was surely the longest a vixen had ever kept his attention. Even the vixens back home had not managed to keep his interest this long, and they were pretty interesting.

"And why would I bother to provide that?" Ki said with interest. Of course, he knew the reason already. Well for himself at least. The 'daeva would bother to keep her flame alive because she had a certain spark about her that he enjoyed being around. But it was clearly unheard of for a 'Daeva to be interested in a normal vixen. Then again, Aruna wasn't exactly normal. But why did she want him there? Did she find him as amusing as he found her? He wondered if she took comfort in the heat his flames provided.

Aruna was glad she hadn't angered Ki with anything she had said so far. Weren't 'Daeva's supposed to be hot-tempered. She had been more than a little bothersome, at least some other foxes might have thought so. He simply seemed more interested than annoyed.

"You said yourself that fire deserved to be among fire," Aruna pointed out, smiling. "Would you really deprive me of a chance to find a permanent heat soure? Don't I deserve to thrive?" She looked up at him, still smiling, and watching for his reaction.

Ki couldn't help but smile, almost mischievously, at the flaming vixen in front of him. She had a point. He did say her fire deserved to be among other fire and that she needed a heat source. But he wondered if she had any idea what she was getting herself into. Did she really mean what she said? Or was curiosity and the need for good conversation getting the best of her?

"You have a point. I am not one to be the judge of whether or not you deserve to thrive." He stood and flexed his wings, the fire at his paws flaring up a tiny bit. "But. It would be wrong of me to deprive you and your fire of the chance to find out what you are capable of." Ki walked closer to the vixen until he was standing over her, a closeness most foxes would feel uncomfortable in. "I have to ask though. Do you really know what you're getting yourself into, asking a 'Daeva to provide a heat source?"
