Faction/Race Demon – water essence

Personality:
"I'm not scared of you!" - Fearless is one of the adjectives that can be used to describe her. In her short 14 years of life, she’s gotten into so much trouble and has taken so many unnecessary risks that her parents don’t even know what to do with her anymore. She’s come home with her fair share of scrapes and bruises but nothing too serious.... yet. She’s rambunctious and a feisty preteen and doesn’t know anything about the full dangers of the world around her. This personality characteristic will get her into plenty of trouble whether she wants it or not. Along with a knack for trouble, she has a horrible perception of whether things are ‘safe’ or not and she’s completely unaware of her own physical limitations. She's not exactly patient so that causes her to rush into making not the best decisions.

"I can take care of myself. >.>" - Fear may not be a problem for her but she really keeps her distance from others. She doesn't want to deal with the emotional binding factors that come along with having close friends. In fact, she doesn't like dealing with 'touchy feely' emotions at all. Even though she avoids getting too close to others, she’s good at making first impressions with her upbeat, adventurous attitude but she doesn’t let anybody close enough to really get to know her. Deep down, Alcie actually does care about others but she really just doesn't show it.

She's going to be playing this delicate balance between her recklessness and how much she cares about her relationships. So she's leaning towards being very self-centered but there's a part of her that -wants- to care. Eventually, she'll be forced to pick one side. So for now, her friends are relatively superficial and they're really just there for having company. Her personality is naturally social so she does like socializing with other students.

"I'm not weird..." - Some random quirks about her. Since she was born, she has been very flexible and she’s been able to fit into awkward places. Also, from the moment her parents put her in the water, Alcie was a natural at swimming (obv!) and can swim at unnaturally fast speeds. She feels right at home in the water. Also, she has a soft spot for anything that swims really and she has several pet fish. :3

"My family is the weird one..." - Her family is from the Mediterranean area but nobody’s really sure exactly which country their family hails from. Her name is a combination of Greek and Italian so her ancestors are probably from all over the place. She also has one older brother and he’s done his best to keep her from getting too out of hand. He’s probably the only person in her family that has some control over what she does. She confides most things in him and he knows the most about her. She's not exactly a tomboy but neither is she really girly. Hanging out with her brother, she's always 'hung out with the boys' but her mother has tried her best to prevent Alcie from becoming too boyish.

Why are they enrolled in Amityville Academy? Like almost all children, she had no interest in going to school for academic purposes and she was partially forced to by her parents. They partially just wanted to dump her somewhere because they were so tired of watching her and making sure she didn't killhurt herself on accident. Her parents would actually really like her to be around more demons and socialize with different families. Alcie comes from a long line of powerful water demons and her parents want her to mingle. (and her mother would like it if Alcie made some female friends so that they can teach her something about being a... girl.) They also want her to learn to control her demon abilities to make her family proud. She agrees to enroll because she sees this as another adventure where she can meet new people and get into new trouble. In the future, I can see her taking more of an interest in academics when she realizes how much it can help her develop her FEAR.

FEAR: Aquaphobia – fear of drowning – She can make people feel like water is enclosing around them making them feel like they have to hold their breath. Once out of breathe, they would 'feel' the water rushing down their throats. If the panic doesn't cause them to pass out, the lack of oxygen will. -It’s all an illusion and they’re not actually drowning. It's similar to the feeling of claustrophobia.-
- As a first year, her powers would be relatively weak. She would only be able to sustain the attack for a few seconds and it will be easy to break her concentration. The sensation of the water would cause them to panic and make them confused and disoriented for a short time allowing her to throw a punch or two.
- It requires great concentration, a certain amount of time, and she also has to finish a short Latin phrase for the attack to work. So it would be very possible for her opponents to break free from the attack. Like most demons, she’s very weak to physical attacks so if her opponent were to break her concentration before she finished her attack, she would have to stop and start over.

Natural Ability: Being a water essence demon, Alcyone can manipulate veeery small amounts of water at a time. Twirling a veery small amount of water in her hands or something like that. She can only do it for a short time and has to be within 10 ft of a water source.


Physical Description: For a 14 year old, she’s only 5' 3" and has a very petite stature. She's pretty skinny and lanky.
Eye Colour: Bright green
Hair Colour/Style: Hair color is black with maybe a few blue streaks in her bangs. Her hair is long, wavy and flowy with a few hairpins with fish on them.
Skin Colour: Pale skin tone
Clothing Style/Colours: Here's an avatar of what I'm thinking of for clothing design (colors and a few things need to be changed). The colors would be a gradient of cerulean blues and where the gold is on the avatar, it would be silvery blue. The top part of her dress is made of a light material. The skirt is flowy kind of like fish fins. And she's still young so the skirt's hem is lower than the avatar. The colors are various shades of cerulean blue.
Extra: Fin-like 'horns' inspired by fish fins. She has patches of pearly white, iridescent fish like scales on her body and some on her face.

Personality: Nothing really bad to say about her personality. I do love the whole flexible and adventurous part her and Saras or Miku could have a few adventures. I do have a few questions though.
Will she every open up to people?
What made her want to close off to people?
What would draw her to another person? I know she doesn't want to get close to others so does she have something that might make her interested (not sexually) in another person?

Fear: Mhmm not really much to say about it, but you have a lot of wiggle room. Maybe the growth of hers could be that she could control the liquid in a person's body. Like causing them to drown in their own fluids. Or even draining a person's fluids causing them to dehydrate as the move. The sweat increases as they continue in battle.

I really do like her personality and can't wait to see what mischief she gets into.

First off - there's a lot that I love about her personality. I think it's one of strongest out there when it comes to really reflecting the character's age and stage of development, which impressed me to read a fair bit. One thing that confused me about this character was in trying to figure exactly how self-centered her personality was. It seems like she's struggling with that somewhat. On one hand, her perspective is entirely self-centered when she's acting reckless, worrying her family and causing a lot of stress to the people around her. On the other, she seems to be able to look outside of herself when there are other people accompanying her to these things, which is a little hard for me to grasp.

Another thing that I'm trying to understand is how she socializes. She doesn't have a lot of friends and avoids close ties with others, but she doesn't look for approval in other ways, either. In short, it seems like this character is designed to be an island - and that isn't usually something that works out well. I'd almost be worried for her mental state, whether she'd be prone to depression or self-destruction, with the way that she seems to be written to avoid close connections and engage in high-risk behavior.

I'm wondering if there's some subtext to the character that I've missed, because you do mention that she keeps friends later in the personality. What sort of friends are these, then? Are they shallow relationships, which would suit her issues with closeness; and if that's the case, what do they mean to her? Just people to spend time with and blow off steam, and she keeps her secrets to herself? Someone to show off to, without worrying about what others will think? You also mention an older brother who she seems to have respect for - is this who she turns to for the deeper stuff, when she really needs someone to talk to?

I think the main thing that ought to be added is some mention of what she looks for in other people, and needs them for. Figure out what she does when she gets in over her head, and how she handles the accumulation of stress (or doesn't) without seeming to have a lot of people she can rely on.

Regarding her FEAR power - I like the idea behind it, but I'd like to understand better how it can make her opponents confused or disoriented. When you say that, do you mean that they would react to the sensation of water around them, which may confuse or disorient them? Or is there some other method by which this is happening? I'm also not sure about whether it would be too powerful for her to control the liquid in someone's body. There's a lot of damage she could do to someone based on that, which could amount to an instant KO or fatality (example - instead of flooding the lungs, what if you flooded the heart or the brain?) I'd suggest that you take a look into waterboarding, which I think would have very similar effects to how you've designed her powers; you can get some pretty strong reactions out of that without crossing over into territory that might be overpowered.

All in all, I love the character design, even if there were a few bits that I was having trouble understanding. I hope my crit's helped! <3

you mentioned that she has a brother, did he go to this school? if so would she have to live under his shadow?

Picking up on Vamps' points, there are some really great alternatives for horn- and wing-like appendages among aquatic animals. Gorgeous, funky, functional - if that is an aspect of your demon that can change, maybe it might bear looking into?

I really like the way her personality seems to fight against itself: you made that concept work well. While reading, I can see a lot of depth there for future roleplays and coming to terms with her feelings about others v. her own self-preservation. I also like that she's all about keeping her emotions safe, and her body not-so-much. Will that fearless, reckless quality always be a part of her?

I was also interested in the first impressions she makes, as you make it sound like she's got some real charisma. How does that affect her? What does she think about these people who meet her on such a good note, but then actually want to - gasp - get to know her better; does she use them just for company's sake, shrug them aside without a thought, or something else entirely?

Another thing that stood out to me were her parents. Saying that they dumped her at Amityville because they were tired of watching her carries some pretty heavy connotations. What is the relationship between she and her family like, heritage aside? How does she feel toward them?

Lastly, one thing that I was hoping to see but didn't: what about Alcyone and water? You talk about the importance of her heritage and learning to swim, and you touch on her having an interest in her FEAR. I'd love to get a feel for how she feels about the water that fills up so much of what she is.
