Today was the day, there was no doubt about it. There was something in his very bones that was alerting him to accomplish this ritual, here and now. The sky was clear, the water deep blue and crystal clear. Why, just the sight of it made his toes curl into the soft sand, eager to race fight into the shoreline. That, however, depended on his guardians choice.

Patiently, Gene peered up at the dark leopardess with his pale eyes and waited for approval. He owed her alot, considering she was pleasant enough to escort him on this ritual. He was one of the few in the pride to have no parents or kin. And so with it was with respect and silence that he waited for the leopardess to nod and acknowledge the start of the ritual. Her own dusty eyes turned to the boy, a smile in their light. Then she nodded and patted her tail against the sand. It was time to prove his worth.

Finally smiling like the young boy he is, Gene bounded up from his seat and trotted to the water. The liquid was cool to the touch, but bearable in temperature. It took no time at all for him to slink his whole body to the deeper waters, paws still brushing the murky mud below. A wave or two batted at his face and ears, but the boy persevered and finally made it to the darker depths of the sea. Paddling his legs strongly, Gene counted to ten before turning his gaze back to the shore. With a smile beaming to the leopardess, the pale blue lion swam back to his home, feeling a new swell of pride blooming in his chest.
