Potions is a very distinct form of magic that involves test bottles and tubes, magical ingredients, lots of recipes, and a knack for chemistry. The current professor teaching potions is Professor Slughorn.

Gilderoy groaned as he walked into potions and sat down at an empty table. He knew he'd just make a fool of himself but he wanted to get auror training so he would have to pass potions this year. He looked around and noticed it was not only Ravenclaws but gryfindor and slytherin 7th years as well.

Severus was preparing a potion for skins diseases (that you rub on the affected area) at one of the cauldrons. That was the lesson for that day. Severus's favorite subject was Potions, and he did quite well at it.

Lily walked into Potions and put on a smile. She sat in the front and smiled at Professor Slughorn who was at the front of the room. "Good morning, Professor Slughorn," she said to him. He smiled back. "Good to see again, Lily. I have missed your face in this class. And your wonderful potions," he told her. "Well, it's good to see you again," she said, before getting ready for the lesson.
When she had all of her stuff out, she turned and looked at the rest of the people who had come early. She saw Gilderoy and Severus. She smiled at Gilderoy and didn't bother look at Severous again.

Severus leaned over towards Gilderoy. "You're supposed to add beetle juice, not dragon webs", he whispered. "And if you add that" - Severus nodded to a little vial full of pink liquid Gilderoy was holding - "the potion will probably explode in your face. Just trying to help." He looked up as Lily entered the room, her eyes twinkling just like they always did. "Good morning, Miss Evans", he said quietly

Gilderoy blinked.
"Oh..",he said. He put the vile down and examined his book.
"Thanks man.",he said sounding relived.

James bounded into class late. He had just woken up and scrambled to get himself and Sirius to class. Though he had been forced to leave Sirius behind in order to get to class.
"Sorry I'm late Professor Slughorn," James said quickly, sliding into a seat near Lily. He smiled charmingly at her and sent a sneer at Severus.

Trying to not only get into good favor with Snape but also to look a little more prepaired, Eliza uses James late entry to disguise her own.
Handing Severus a vial of aloe she smiles.
See if this dosen't add some soothing extract to your mix?
With a wink she finds a seat, trying to see what she might do with the assignment.

Severus stared blankly at the vial, not sure what to do with it. He poured a few drops into his cauldron and his potion briefly turned green, the color he wanted. He poured the rest of the vial in and it started to fizzle and pop. Severus added some purple liquid which calmed the potion down before it exploded. It still had that odd green color he liked. "Thanks", he said. He realized that she was still looking for a seat and offered the empty one next to him for her.

Lily looked at James and rolled her eyes, looking at her book. She started on he potion. It did what she wanted and she grinned to herself. She saw Professor Slughorn smiling at her and her potion. "Good job, Lily," he told her before walking away to look at James potion.

James worked on his potion sloppily. He kept looking over at Lily and missing steps or adding the wrong thing. His cauldron started to bubble with steel gray liquid that most definitely was not what they were meant to be making.

Severus glanced over at James. He seemed to be having some trouble with his potion. So he gave James a small vial of bright yellow stuff that would probably make the potion more or less decent. Severus hoped that would avoid him an unpleasant free period.

James looked at Severus with a mixture of confusion and suspicion. Why was Severus helping him, if that was what it was. Why would Severus do anything other than sneer at his pitiful attempt at potion making?
He took the vial gingerly and examined it suspiciously. Deciding there wasn't much that he could do to make the potion worse, he added the yellow liquid.

Severus watched James pour the contents of the vial into his potion. Not that Severus would want to help James, of course. He just wanted to make a good first impression on the new girl beside him and perhaps get to keep his sandwich at lunch...
