It was morning, which meant that the mists were high. Harimau'tapi had been watching them rise every morning and recede every afternoon of her young life. She thought they were beautiful, the way they swirled and eddied and formed phantom shames. She liked how you couldn't tell where a person was until you were right on top of them. She had been waiting eagerly for the day when she would be allowed to go out into the mists and explore for herself.

"It's today! It's today!" Hari enthused, half-singing as she pranced at the edge of her den. "Today I go out to play!"

The striped cub had considered asking her siblings if they wanted to come out with her, but in the end she decided that for her first excursion she wanted to be alone. Oh, she didn't want to stay alone - if she met someone out there, that would be a wonderful adventure - but she didn't want to have a guide or someone trying to tell her to go another way. If she got lost, she would ask for help. She had no doubt someone would be glad to oblige her.

Das Tor
Adventure. It was what Lach-ngoma LIVED for. To see what was new, what was interesting, to test the limits. THAT was the sort of thing that kept a peaceful life from getting boring. Ngoma knew she'd eventually settle down, find a nice male, have cubs...but until then, she was going to keep moving, keep exploring! All was good as long as she didn't break any bones....again....right?

The pink and white adolescent made her way through the mists, enjoying her free time before her lessons as a Ghost. She kept low, almost as if stalking...Seeking someone to surprise and maybe pounce, if they weren't a cub.

As Hari stepped into the mists, feeling them swirl around her for the first time, she was surprised to learn that they were actually somewhat damp. She wasn't sure how she felt about that. They seemed to cling to her whiskers, almost weighing them down, and the way sounds - even the sound of her feet - were muffled just amazed her. It wasn't like that in the den, though she rarely heard anything from outside when she was within. Experimenting with this, Hari began to sing:

"Today the sky above is grey, today my fur is brown! The mist's around me every way, my feet are on the ground!" She was young, and while she loved to sing and hear her own voice, her lyrical skill left a bit to be desired. For that matter, her notes weren't so creative either. The way the mists absorbed her voice fascinated her, and she continued to sing just to experiment. Sometimes she punctuated her singing with a few very high yowls and very low growls, curious about the way they failed to echo.

While she walked, her green eyes stared into the mists, but she couldn't see very much around her. Certainly she didn't see an older lioness stalking through the mists, crouching low and ready to pounce. Not until she nearly stumbled over the pale adolescent did she see the flash of pink.

"Oh!" she exclaimed.

Das Tor
Ngoma made a sound of surprise as something small and fuzzy practically stumbled into her. Normally SHE did the sneaking up! She backed up a bit, blinking. Unlike the cub, Ngoma was used to the mists and how they played with sight. So small...she was probably one of the new cubs! Ngoma smiled brightly. Huzzah for something new!

"Hi there! I didn't see ya! Good job, though. Usually I end up sneaking up on others, not the other way around!" Someone was very bright and cheerful, despite being run into.

"Hi," Hari said, feeling a little foolish. She hadn't meant to sneak up on anyone. But apparently that was a good thing? She was being congratulated and told good job. That meant it was good that she'd been sneaky, even if it was accidental sneakiness.

"Thanks. You're really good at it, I think. You sneaked up on me and you weren't even moving. That's really impressive." Hari wondered if she was talking too much. She'd been told that when you're in the mists, you're supposed to be quiet, like a ghost, but she'd never met this lioness before. She was much smaller than Hari's mother, and very differently colored. Everything about her was new and interesting to the cub.

Hari took a deep breath, which was needful because her name was very long. "I'm Harimau'tapi, but you can call me Hari. Or Tapi. What's your name?"

Das Tor
Ngoma giggled. The cub was a little like her when she was little! Everything was new and she had all sorts of questions! Well....Ngoma still had lots of questions, but that was besides the point! "Most of my family blends into the mists really well. Da is all white, and Ma is white with really pale blue-y-gray markings. And..." She leaned in, as if to tell a secret.

"I've been practicin' since I was little." She nodded sagely, then smiled again. "I'm Lach-ngoma! But most call me Ngoma. It's very nice t'meetcha, Hari!"

Hari's green eyes widened enormously. No one in her family was particularly misty-colored. She wondered if that was a bad thing. It probably wasn't. No one would be so silly as to think a person was less of a person just because their fur wasn't misty-colored, would they? Clearly her exposure to the world was extremely limited. Obviously. It was her first day out of the den.

She leaned in closer to hear whatever wisdom Ngoma decided to share with her. When Ngoma finished confiding in her, telling of her youth spent practicing, Hari started backward, exclaiming, "You have? Really? Do you think I could learn to be as good at it as you are?"

Hari smiled widely, showing very sharp baby teeth. "It's nice to meet you, too, Ngoma."

Something else the older lioness had said caught Hari's attention, "What's your Da like, besides white? I don't have one. I don't think. I mean, I haven't met him if I have. Maybe he's really good at hiding himself, like you are." The idea was appealing to the cub.

Das Tor
Ngoma nodded. "I'm sure you will! You just gotta remember that you're one with the mists. No matter your color, no matter your size. Here...this is our home, the place we were born. The mists like us." She was certain of it. How else could they hide in them so well, even with the help of the eidolon?

The question about her Da made her blink. "Oh? Well...my Da's pretty neat! He's really nice and cares about others a lot. And he's a GREAT hunter. He can be kinda a goofball though. Especially around Ma. When me and my brothers and sisters were little, he let us climb all over him, or get rides on his back...cause he's tall for a lion. He's got long legs."

"Are the mists like people, then? Can they talk? That would be really neat! Is that why we're supposed to be quiet, so we can hear them talking?" The questions just came spilling out of her without pause. This was entirely too exciting. "I'll try to be one with them, though. That sounds fun. Especially if they like us."

"Your Da sounds like a lot of fun. I hope mine's like that, too. I'll have to ask Mama when I go home." It didn't occur to Hari that her mother might not want to talk about it, or might not know. It didn't matter much to her, either way, but having a Da seemed like something really amazing.

"I have a brother and a sister, too. Do you have lots of them, or just one of each, like me?"

Das Tor
Ngoma looked thoughtful a moment. "Y'know...I don't know if the mists talk. Maybe they do. I'll have to ask Ma later." It would be neat if the mists talked! She'd never thought of that before! "And my Da is lots of fun. Maybe you'll get to meet him one day! I hope your Da is nice too. Ma says there's some Das that aren't nice." She frowned.

"My older siblings had a not-nice Da. Ma had them before she met my Da...I've got three older brothers and a sister! And then...from my litter, I've got three brothers and four sisters!" She giggled. "I've got lots of siblings. And cousins too!"

It was a little disappointing that Ngoma didn't know whether the mists talked or not, but that meant there was something for Hari to find out for herself. Another adventure to have some other time. Maybe if she could keep quiet enough, or sing to the mists, they would talk back. Or maybe they'd even sing back. That would be really exciting. Especially if she was the first person the mists ever spoke to.

"Das can be not-nice? I didn't know that. It's good that you can get new ones when they're bad though. Your Ma must be really smart." Hari's mother was really loving, and Hari had always assumed she knew everything, but maybe that was something all mothers could do. Maybe when Hari grew up and became a Ma she'd know everything, too.

"Oh! That's a lot of siblings. And they all look like you, with really pale fur? That should make it easy for me to tell who's in your family. I don't think my family's as big as yours. How old are you, anyway? Are your older brothers and sister Mas and Das?"

Das Tor
The pale adolescent nodded. "Yeah. And Ma is really smart. Makes up for my Da. He's nice, but really dense in the head sometimes." She giggled again.

"No...not all my sibs have pale fur. One of my sisters is all bright pink, and another is this really dark purple. They're really pretty. My older sister actually has fur colored a little like yours, with browns, and my older brothers are browns and grays and one is mostly black." Her family had all sorts of colors!

"Me? I'm not all grown up yet. And my older brothers and sister...they're not Mas and Das yet. Haven't found mates. Two of my older cousins are Das though."

Hari giggled. She wasn't sure why it was funny that Ngoma's Da wasn't very smart, but it really was. And having a sister with bright pink fur, for whatever reason, also struck Hari as being ridiculously funny.

"Pink!" she said, speaking through her giggles. "Really? I bet they are really pretty, but how do they blend in with the mists? I guess they practiced a lot, like you. Everyone in my family is kind of colored like I am. And we've all got stripes!"

"I know you're not a grown-up yet!" Hari said. "You're nowhere near as big as my Ma is. You couldn't be a grown-up yet. But don't you just automatically turn into a Ma or a Da when you grow up?" Some facts of life escaped Hari. She would learn more when she grew up, but for the time being, she was under the impression that being a parent and being a grown-up were synonymous.

Das Tor
"Maybe they do, maybe they don't. Some members of the pride don't need to. Like...my near-twin Shairi is gonna be a Scholar. So she doesn't need to, even though she could." Ngoma grinned. "It's all a matter of what you wanna do when you grow up."

She sat, patting Hari's head lightly. "You'd be surprised. Sometimes, we don't get as big as our parents. Like...my cousin Talamh, she never got as big as my Aunt Codail. And Aunt Codail is big for a lioness. But Talamh's Da was small. And you don't automatically become a Ma or Da when you're all grown up. There's....stuff you gotta do first. Like find a mate."

Princess_Feylin
"Oh. I don't know what I want to do when I grow up. Well. What can a person do when they're grown-up? What does a Scholar do?" All of this was new to Hari, and she wanted to learn more. This was proving to be a great excursion. She was learning so much. Mists might talk. People could be pink. All sorts of things. The bit about the mists talking was the best thing she'd ever heard. She really hoped that one day she'd hear them.

"Is Shairi really smart, too? Like your Ma? And what's a near-twin? What's a twin?" More new things to learn. "Is a twin just like a sister or a brother, or is it something special?"

Hari ducked away from Ngoma's patting paw and jumped to the side, landing without much grace. "Oh. A mate. I don't think I want one of those yet. But what other stuff do you have to do? Is there a test or something? How can there be bad Das if there's a test?"

Das Tor
Ngoma grinned. "Oh, there's lots of things you can do when you grow up! You could be a Ghost or a Warrior, and help keep bad creatures out of the pride, and bring good ones in. Ooooor...there's Shepards, who look after cubs, and Shamans, who help us when we hurt ourselves. The Seekers go out into the world to find new blood for the pride, while Hunters help keep us all fed. My Da's a Hunter! And Scholars tell the history of the pride...they have REALLY good memories, so they can remember everything that happens. Especially the big stuff. There's the Mystics, too. Like my Ma. They can See things...like the past, or what might happen in the future. Sometimes they See things that happen FAAAAAAAR away!"

She didn't mind all of Hari's questions...curiosity was good! "Shairi's very smart, yup! She definitely takes after Ma in that respect. And twins are special. It's a brother or sister who looks just like you do, same colors and markings. And a near-twin is a brother or sister that is ALMOST a twin...but something about their colors or markings is JUUUUUST different enough that they aren't."

The white and pink adolescent frowned. "Well...it's not something I can really tell you yet. It's something you find out about when you're bigger. Like...my age. I didn't find out about it until recently, myself. But the way things are done...there's no test. That's why there's bad Das out in the world. But not here. Here, there's only good Das."

Hari's eyes grew very wide at the recitation of all the possible things she could do when she grew up. It was entirely too much to hold in her head all at once, and she lost track after Ngoma said Ghost and Warrior. In fact, a few seconds later she wasn't one hundred percent sure what those two did, even. She did manage to keep it in her head that Ngoma's Da was a Hunter, though, since the older lioness chose to elaborate on that point, and that her Ma was a Mystic.

"I sometimes see things that aren't there, really," Hari ventured. "Is that like what your Ma does?"

Thinking about different family members, twins and near-twins and the like, Hari was briefly disappointed that she didn't have a twin or a near-twin, but not terribly so. She loved her family just the way it was, and honestly didn't think she would like to be in danger of being mistaken for someone else. That didn't sound like it would be much fun at all.

"Oh," was all she could think to say. It was a lot for her to take in, and her mind was practically burning with the effort of organizing and storing all that new information, and trying to make connections so that she would remember it in time to come. She was secretly grateflu that Ngoma couldn't tell her about all the rest of the things that had to happen before a person could be a parent. Her brain already felt overstuffed.

"What are you going to do when you grow up?" she asked.

Das Tor
Ngoma nodded. "Yup! My Ma Sees lots of things. Her visions are still strong, too. She tells me that they led her here, when she was part of a different pride." Her Aunt Codail was technically a Mystic too, but her aunt was much happier as a Shepard, surrounded by cubs.

"Me? I'm going to be a Ghost!" She giggled. "Best way to meet new creatures that aren't part of the pride! I might even meet a boy I like enough for a mate!"

Princess_Feylin
Hari nodded enthusiastically. She was far too young to appreciate that sometimes it was best to be discrete and even silent on the subject of visions. She was just excited to learn that there were others who did the same thing. To her knowledge both of her siblings did that, too. She was beginning to come to the conclusion that it was a normal trait to have, and might have reasoned, upon learning that it was not one everyone had, that it was a skill which could be learned.

"Wow. Do you have to be a Mystic if you see things like your Ma and I, or can you still do other things?" Hari asked. She thought it might be interesting to meet other creatures. Not that she was even sure what other creatures there were to meet. The only person she'd met outside of the family so far had actually been Ngoma, since she'd been too young before to remember any of the lions and lionesses who might have come to the den to see her and her siblings when they were just born.

"That would be really good, wouldn't it," Hari replied, not really sure what to make of all this. Ngoma certainly made it sound exciting.

Das Tor
Ngoma shook her head. "Nope! My Aunt Codail Sees things too, but she's a Shepard. Because she loves being with cubs, and is really good with 'em." She stretched. "And I think there's a couple others in the pride like that, too. Who See things, but are good at other things."

The adolescent struck a very 'adventurous' pose. "It would be very good! It'd be like having a grand adventure, but I wouldn't have to leave home and make Ma and Da sad!"

"Oh, good!" Hari exclaimed.

She was having a grand adventure of her own, right now, though it was probaly time for her to start heading home. She didn't want to end up lost in the mists. That would make her feel very silly indeed. Though maybe the mists would help her if she got lost, and talk to her so she could find her way home. That would be really nice.

"I should probably go home," she said reluctantly. "It was really fun meeting you though, Ngoma. You really know a lot of things. I bet you're going to be a really good Ghost."

Das Tor
Ngoma grinned sheepishly and nodded. "Thanks! I hope I become a really good Ghost too!" She wanted to make her family proud of her. "It was nice meeting you, Hari. I hope you find your way back home okay. I don't think your Ma would be happy if you ended up lost."
