I'm 15.. And I like this 18 year old who likes me back. What is the soonest age I can date him, without my parents being able to call the cops and say "rape"? I've heard 18, I've heard 16. I'm in North Carolina...
Thanks smile

I always thought that people with that age gap were allowed to date; They weren't allowed to engage in sexual activities though.

I'm in South Carolina and, if I'm correct, as long as you're not sexually active, they can't call it rape.

Well, they'd have to be able to prove there's a sexual relationship there for him to be prosecuted for stat. rape.
So there's no reason you can't date him, but I'd hold off on a sexual relationship until you're at least 16. Maybe have him over to meet your parents first so they can get an idea of who he is and get comfortable with him?

In North Carolina it's a 4 year age difference if you're a minor. 16 is the legal age when you are able to have sex and not get "in trouble" with it.

Age of consent differs from states and country. (some countries don't have an age of consent).
Statutory Rape
Generally, when someone of or over the age of consent has sex with someone below the age of consent, it is considered statutory rape. Sexual intercourse with a person who is mentally deficient or unconscious and therefore incapable of giving consent is also sometimes considered statutory rape.
All states have an "age of consent," or an age at which a person can legally consent to sexual activity and can then no longer be a victim of statutory rape. Some states also have laws that look at the age difference between the two people as well as their individual ages.
Statutory rape charges can be brought up by the victim, parents of the victim, and in most states, they can be raised by the state.

Can someone explain age of consent though?
I mean, does it state that once you are of a certain age, you can legally have sex WITHOUT parental permission?
Shouldn't that also follow with certain things such as prescribing birth control, and buying condoms?
I'm just kind of curious.

Age of consent is the age at which you CAN have sex (regardless of parental permission). For example, a five year old is not legally allowed to be sexually active, regardless of what his/her parents think.
Most states will begin the age of consent at 14. Before that, you are not legally allowed to have sex with anyone, regardless of their age. Beyond that, I know Pennsylvania goes by 3 years. So if you are 14, the oldest person you can have sex with will be 17, and so forth.
While parental consent means diddly squat, the authorities will obviously only find out about what's going on behind closed doors if they are alerted. So if everyone involved (parents included) approve of an illegal relationship, it doesn't make a lick of difference whether or not it is illegal.
EDIT: The pill is not exclusively for reproductive purposes. It can be used to help treat acne or regulate periods. I had a friend who was on the pill long before she reached the age of consent simply because she was bleeding an unhealthy amount every time she had her period. So no. As for condoms, I doubt there are any federal laws regarding their purchase. There may be some state restrictions, but I have yet to hear about that. I know that private businesses sometimes will prevent people from buying them until a certain age is reached.
That being said, pharmacists are legally protected to refuse selling anything if they find it morally wrong. So if you are severly underaged, it's quite possible that you will not be able to find a pharmacist willing to sell you contraceptives.

I'm just kind of curious. Like Kukushka says, parent's permission is useless. If you're of the LEGAL consent age, and you have sex, your parents can still discipline you. You can choose to move out, of course. It's called the "Legal consent age" because it's a law of the state/country. Even if your parents said you could have sex with someone under the age or you are under the age, you will still be prosecuted by the State. If you REALLY want to know what your state is, here's a link from the Age of Consent Sticky: http://www.ageofconsent.com/ageofconsent.htmAbout the birth control: In Canada, A person at any age can buy birth control. A person of any age can be given the pill. Both of these include WITHOUT the permission of a parent. In USA, In most places, you can buy condoms whatever your age. Also, your doctor can perscribe pills to you at whatever age, but I think you need permission from your parents until you are 16 or 18.

Just to add to that point, it depends on where you live in Canada I think. For example, when I was 17, I was told that I was now able to have doctor-patient privilege, meaning I could ask the doctor for something or tell her something, and unless my life was in danger (I had HIV, I was suicidal, etc) they wouldn't tell my parents.
I'm not sure if 17 is the age for all of Canada, or just BC. But I thought I'd mention it. 3nodding
Although as Yukito Yu said, to my knowledge there is no age restriction on buying things like condoms or lube. I bought condoms when I was 16 or 17, and I've had no hassle with it.

i think that a couple of people have said this, but llegal the most your parent can to stop you from see him is grounding you. but if you have sex with him then it is a different story. do you know for a fact that your parents will be against up dating someone that is only three years older then you?

My parents always promised me that it would be confidental anyways (not that it mattered, I went with my mother to get my pill perscription. That's just how we are in my family.) I'll look into that when I get back from my course today.
