Once magic was discovered, it all went downhill.

James Hopper did not unveil us to the world, but he might as well have. He is credited with passing through the first government legislation that separated us from normal kids and required us to join these schools (although other countries were also quite close). We are trained from early childhood that we have a special purpose in this world. Our purpose is to protect countries and join the army.

We are sent to these special military academies so that they can teach us to be weapons in war. We are given a number on the back of our necks and we grow up running through drills of killing enemies. They teach us math, science, and history (mostly wars and battles) and they don't like us wasting time reading books. "You are here to learn not to die so you can do it again," I heard once.

Out first three years are spent learning basics. We must learn basic fighting and try out different weapons. After that, we specialize in our weapon and train more with our powers. In the last year, the top four students must fight to the death. The top two in powers fight each other and the top two in weapons fight each other. It's barbaric and stupid, and also how I died.

I've continued to look in at the school over the years and not long after my death, a group was formed so that they could fight against what the government wanted us to do. They recruit students who show the most defiance and also the most promise. If the student is worth having join, they are invited. Only the students in the group, and the teachers and principal, know about the group. The rest of the students are in the dark, though some are suspicious.

There are quite a few different kinds of people in the school. There are vampires, werewolves, elementals and psychics to name a few. There are even a few who are a mixture of some. But, most of us die by the time we are thirty, which is when men can leave the military. Girls can leave the military at twenty-five however.

The school itself is old and looks like a castle. It is surrounded by fences and a mine field as well as a wall that, once someone passes before it is disabled, zaps their powers frozen for weeks sometimes. We are not meant to leave this school no matter how much we wish.

Teachers are allowed to put us into power-neutralizing cells. The only thing they are not allowed to do is to kill us. I know more than one student was just about tortured for information on the Defiant. One of the latest things learned by the students from the questioning was that some teachers might actually be magical.

The twins walked into the school in perfect step. They were not identical twins, but they acted like it. Even their powers were uncannily similar. They did differ in the way they fought though. Athie preferred to fight with magic and Leuca was better with weaponry.

ʆευϲɑ: "Ready for another year in this dump?" Leuca asked in her sing-song voice. She managed to sound bright and cheery when she was angry.

Λтɧɩε: "Unfortunately," Athie replied as she turned towards the cafeteria. She was not hungry, but it was a good place for people to gather and to see who had been thrown in this year.

"Morning Anna Maria," they said in unison. The twins stood on either side of the girl. The twins were never ones for flashy colors to begin with. Unfortunately, Athie's hair was a little on the bright side.

ʆευϲɑ: "Care to join us for a late lunch? It's among our last few days of freedom," Leuca offered. She had known Anna Maria from the Defiant like many others in the school.

Λтɧɩε: Athie stood quietly. She was used to being quiet as part of gaining intelligence, and the habit stuck. She was not always as familiar with the Defiant members because a lot of the time she had to keep an ear on the teachers.
