so im curious as to why trombones arent aloud in DCI im sure there is a good reason in fact i could probably come up with a few
they are awkward to march
they dont sound a little more harsh than some others such as the Baritone/ Euphonium
but there is such a thing as a marching trombone (our school has one its really old and crappy though) and i feel that the sound is a nice compliment to the band. Though im not trying to wine here because im probably gonna learn either mello or baritone eventually for marching band it still causes me to wonder why so im asking you guys : )

Our band doesnt march trombones. -Its hard to slide and slideXD -they are longer then most, so intervals have to be large enoguh to fit them -it is very easy to impale people with them -One person was knocked out by a trombone slide, which is when we stopped using them

We were going to do that. I think its stupid. We decided against it because we would have had 8 baritone players and only 4 baritones. But I couldn't play mellophone... that's the only time I've ever been furious at my director, is when he didn't let me switch.

I think the main reason they don't march trombones in DCI is because its Drum and BUGLE Corps. Trombones don't have valves, therefore they can't change notes as fast.

My school doesn't march trombones. We've never been told why (no one asks xd ), but I'm assuming it's mainly because of our drill. Bobby (our drill writer) likes to write some pretty crazy stuff sometimes, and taking slide positions and stuff into account for that would be too much. And imagine if you had a freshman marching it...our whole band would probably get knocked out, especially with how clueless our freshmen can be sometimes. xd

i guess that all makes sense and i do have to admit i dont like to march it that much because my band director (who writes our shows) neglects to make some intervals big enough and than gets angry when i try and avoid the person by not moving up as quickly or even going over there heads if they are short enough
and not all bugles have vavles just saying they arent used very much anymore but our drama department (of all places XD) has one its an antique or something like that

We march 'bones in my band, but there have been times marching close to one I have feared for my life... xD So I can see how that could be an issue.

In DCI, it's probably because they want valved instruments and the proper tone/color and proper intervals.
But, as for my band... We tried to switch our trombone players over to baritones, but all the trombone players were upset because they didn't want to learn a new instrument. This year, they're happy because they get to be trombone players again. xD

Our band marches trombones. I didn't even know some bands didn't. We've never had problems with the intervals and we do some crazy marching sometimes.

our band doesn't because we have really tight intervals at some points. We have a pretty large bands as well.

Metal Is My Name our band doesn't because we have really tight intervals at some points. We have a pretty large bands as well. Haha well i think i have come to the conclusion that pretty much the reason DCI's (or certain highschool/college bands) dont have them is that they are a pain to march and to make a show for if the intervals are to close you hit people and stuff im thinking of changing to baritone for marching after this season of course

Well, considering I march trombone, I am pretty sure that our school marches trombones.
We never really had too much of a problem with them. We use trigger trombones in our band to lessen the amount of people getting hit in the head. Yeah, they can be annoying to march, but I couldn't imagine myself with any other instrument. I luff mah boner.

my band has a marching trombone, but i could understand why you wouldn't have them, b/c you have to compensate for them in the drill so ppl don't die, & when it gets really cold the slides can freeze in place & snap. it's also very noticeable if you have an extra long metal instrument sticking out of your face. plus if your doing warm ups & going by fingerings they can get very confused. but i don't really care, i'm always behind or next to one in frill, so i'm safe, i'm fine w/my mello.
