Opka had been unsuccessful in his hunting this time around. He'd goofed and scared off anything he tried to wrap his fangs around. How he wanted his mothers praise. Opka just wanted to hear her tell him he did a good job again. Instead of something along the lines of 'get away from me..'.
The pup was crushed. He didn't know what else he could do. What else could he do to gain a approving nod from his mother again? This was a stumper for the all not so bright Opka. He'd have to figure it out though if he wanted to hear some kind words come from his mothers maw about him. It was highly unlikely he would be able to get that reaction with out a kill again.
His head fell a little in sadness. He wasn't going to be able to get her approval. .. The pup sniffled some. Maybe he'd be better if he just gave up.
NO!
He'd gain her approval if it killed him! He'd be her favorite pup!

Bura had been sitting on top of her perch of a boulder all day as she normally did to watch her lands. There really was no reason for her to hunt anymore now that she had helping paws to do that for her.
Opka had been on the hunt all day she knew. Mostly because she had been watching him with , she had to admit, a bit of curiosity. He'd been at it all day and not even caught so much as a beetle. The only thing he'd really gotten was more disappointment from his mother.
How was this little short stubby no skilled brain dead jackal her son? She was so ashamed of him. Sure once in a while by fluke he would come back with something but the other times he was pretty useless. Perhaps it was time to give him a new task. Opka obviously was no hunter after all. He could serve another purpose.
"Opka?" She called out to him. "Come approach my boulder," Bura lifted a brow eying her son.

Opkas ears lifted up the moment Bura called out his name. It was rare that Bura would actualy ASK him to approach her boulder. Very rare. This was either very good or very bad. Even Opka knew this. He was dumb but he knew Bura well enough to know she rarely asked him of all her pups to approach her boulder. Usually for him it was something to do with a punishment or something.
He padded on over toward the boulder. There was a knot in his throat it seemed and his mouth for some reason was dry. Opka was beyond nervous. He almost expected Bura to leap down from her boulder and lay into him. He had half a mind to grovel on the ground and show his belly and then piss to show he was submissive.
Opka took a seat the moment he reached the front of the boulder. His ears laid flat on his head and his neck shrunk into his shoulders some.

Bura had to admit she was amused by Opka's display of submission. He really was growing wise. Took him a long time but he was getting there. Very snail like slowly though. Very slowly. Ugh, just thinking about how slow this one was agitated the hell out of Bura. Did some one perhaps swap pups with out her knowing? Gods she hoped so.
"I don't think you should hunt anymore," Bura went on to explain, " You .. suck at it. I think most of the decent game has probably moved out of the territory because your so god damn loud about it when you hunt. I think your probably better suited for another role." She let what she said sink in Opkas little skull. The female did not want to over load his circuits so to speak. Not a hard task to do but if it was avoidable, you bet your a** she would avoid it.

Opka felt his pride in his hunting sink to the very bottom of his being. His mother had yet once again crushed the small jackals hopes and dreams of pleasing her. He shook and winced. Any moment now he was sure that Bura was going to swoop down from her boulder and wrap her ivory teeth around his neck and put him in place yet again.
He shook so hard that it was quite noticeable to any on looking animals.
Though he probably deserved this as he deserved every other punishment his mother gave him. Though he thought it was strange he never saw his mother act as harshly to any of his sisters. In fact she hardly put them in place as far as he could tell.
There was no time to think about this. Opka braced him self for what he thought to be his impending doom.

Bura did notice the shaking. She was not angered at all by his acts of submission but rather she was pleased. At least one thing she could say about Opka was that he was very controllable and thats all she really wanted in any of her pups or pack mates.
"Im not going to punish you," She rolled her eyes hiding a secret smile that the fear she had invoked in to this small jackal before her was really starting to sink in his stupid head.
"I just don't think your doing well as a hunter. Like I said you really really suck at it. Im quite disappointed every time you even try to go hunt something. Your just embarrassing your self." Bura gave him a cruel smile that undoubtedly Opka was not smart enough to probably pick up on the cruelty.
"I want you to be a watch dog and patrol the boarders from this point on." She glared at her boy. "If you can't do that right then you really are useless."

Opka opened his eyes. Her stinger of words did not pierce his heart though this time. She smiled at him. Opka returned her smile with a dopey one of his own.
So she just wanted him to be a guard? She thought he could handle that? Opka wagged his tail.
"I'll do you proud mom," He informed her.

Bura rolled her eyes. "Just get to the trenches and leave me alone." The female rolled boredly onto her side. She wasn't interested in any chit chat with Opka. He was just her pup, her disgrace, her pawn.

Opka wagged his tail and took off to take his position at the boarder. He'd prove his worth yet!
