Oops.
Well, that wasn't supposed to happen.

A small frown formed on the boy's face, before he turned his attention back to the open book in his lap. He was the only individual occupying the room, which happened to be a quaint and untidy library study. Bookshelves toward up to the ceiling on all walls of the room, with such a vast collection that dust was easily seen covering most of the space. Inside one wall was a simplistic fireplace, cold and neglected with old soot and twigs as logs. Near the center of the room was a wooden desk of antique design, with quill pens and a model globe sitting idly on its surface.

It was here that the boy was found, with his back pressed against the front of the desk and sitting cross-legged on the floor. His form was petite and dark, with small wings folded against his lower back as a cushion to the desk. Feathers crowned his head, bright and glossy. Large ears twitched under a mop of silver hair, and the boy rubbed a small hand against his temple before placing a finger to his chin.

He had followed the instructions precisely, so what had gone wrong? Granted, there were about four pages of directions to remember, but he had no doubt he completed each one. Duel toned eyes narrowed at the book before glaring at the fireplace. Still no fire....all he had managed was an explosive spark that died horribly swift. Who'd have thought mage work could be so hard?

"Ugh, stupid book."

At the far side of the room, a door was cracked open just far enough to peer inside. The view was bad, unfortunately, blocked by a stack of books that someone had left forgotten on the floor. As dusty as they were, it looked like they, similar to a majority of the ones on the shelves, hadn't been touched in a while. Past that and around the desk--a desk that, in his opinion, would look off in any room but this--he could barely see the fluff of his brother's tail. Yet, even without that bright green giveaway, he would have known this was the place.

If asked, he would claim in his flamboyant way that he and his dear brother had such a bond that he always knew where the other was holed up. In reality, he had been stalking the other Pala around since sometime earlier in the day. It was a pastime he partook of often and by now, if his game was still a secret, then he was certain his brother was not meant for things that took much thought.

A slender finger tapped his jawline as he took only a moment to glance away from the mostly unseen spectacle. The room had been still for a while now and he was beginning to wonder if sleep had taken over or something equally anticlimactic. However, a sharp pop caught his attention enough that he practically slammed his face on the edge of the door trying to peek back in and catch what was happening. To no avail, the spark died in the fireplace opening (which he couldn't even see) and all that was left was the smell of burning air wafting over to be sucked out the door.

He could hear his brother's frustration and it brought a sad little smile to his face. Tugging his cloak tighter around himself, he pushed into the room, not even trying to hide the fall of his hooves on the floor.

"You'll put your eye out, Quitt," he joked as he came from the back, poking his head around desk.

Heaving a deep sigh, the sibling shut the large book without minding the cloud of dust that escaped it. With a light thud, Quitt leaned his head back against the desk and took this moment to stretch out his short legs. Good god how long had he crouched in this one spot? He could hear and feel his joints popping by the simple motion.

One large ear folded back as it noticed something new to the room. And it took a moment for the dark boy to realize this reaction, before he blinked to himself. Ah. Footsteps. There was only one other occupant to this dreary old place anymore, so Quitt found himself none concerned with the approaching individual. He simply leaned further back into the desk while removing the book to his side in a tired sweep. Perhaps another time? Right now he could just do with a good nap.

"You would know, wouldn't you E? Besides, don't you have anything better to do than to stalk your brother?" He cast his mismatched eyes fondly to his brother, wondering how long he had been watching. But than again, so long as he wasn't with their father, Quitt didn't mind the occasional shadow of his lurking brother.

An immediate look of mock hurt came to his face and he placed a hand over his chest in one rather dramatic sweep. "I have no idea what you're talking about." As the hand further traveled to rest at the edge of an eye patch, the expression also shifted. It was hard for him to keep such a sorry looking face when he was normally so easy to amuse. "I can see perfectly fine out of this eye, thank you."

Little fingers gripped at the thing and flipped it up. Of course, in the process, he was forced to wrangle the lower string to keep it from slipping up and snapping into his good eye. It was obvious from appearance that the eye couldn't quite see as well as he claimed. It seemed almost to be welded shut, even as Euim tried to force it open, and when he was finally able to crack it a bit, the life had obviously left it. The fur around it had thinned and fallen out, leaving a pale and sullen looking ring. "Oh, well maybe not."

A grin returned full force at his own joke as he slid down to sit on his legs and return the patch to its protective position. Able now to consider his brother a bit, he tapped a finger to his jaw as he had done earlier in the hallway. "Who said I was stalking you? Maybe I just like to hang out in dreary old rooms with my dust bunny friends, too." A sidelong glance at the almost brother-shaped smudge that had been made against the side of the desk made him laugh lightly. "At least I don't look like I'm about to fall asleep in a few years worth of nasty."

"For being so smart you suck at playing 'simple'." Quitt gave a small and crooked grin as he half listened to his brother's excuse. They'd been together since they were nothing but small feather-fluffs, so of course he could hear that ever so little teasing tone in Euim's voice. But then Quitt's blood nearly froze to his brother's next suggestion concerning his eyesight.

Turning his head in protest, Quitt gasped with a gag before slapping his hands to cover his own eyes. Ugh, he always hated that sight! From the scabbed fur to the dull orb hidden beneath, it made the sashed brother sick each time. So why was his brother so persistent to display it so easily? "Would you put that away! Geez E, you know that's unsanitary to mess with." He huffed as he lifted his chin in the other direction, waiting for the patch to be replaced.

With wings folding noisily about his waist, Quitt only sighed before giving his own response. "Well......the dust bunnies are not good conversation pals." Truly, the room was too quiet. Not even the wooden floors squeaked or groaned in companionship to the occupants. "Hm? Who said I fell asleep? I was studying very hard, mind you. I could only guess how easily you'd snooze the morning away. Am I right?" u,u

Not oblivious to his sibling's discomfort, he had let one of his hands roam again and it quickly found itself back at the eye patch. Fingers drummed across the surface as if he couldn't feel the vibrations at all. Sure, he could joke about it, but it would always be a bit of a sore spot emotionally whenever there was a dull throbbing in the side of his head because of it. Still, he smiled. And, of course, that would never stop him from showing it off whenever he could work it into his joking. "Don't be a baby, it's not that bad." Though he knew it was pretty unpleasant from personal experience.

Forcing his hand down--perhaps the tap-tapping was starting to bother his eye after all--he waved it vaguely around. "Really? I thought I heard you in here talking before. I wonder who you were talking to." For a moment, he made to look like he was really mulling over this. "Ah! Maybe you were talking in your sleep."

Euim laughed as his brother proceeded to deny any sleeping. Yeah, he had been watching long enough to know, but that didn't stop a disbelieving brow raise. Which somehow morphed into a look of his own denial and then some form of acceptance. "Mm, it's possible. I do like to sleep." Out of no where, it sounded as if he were seriously considering going back to it now. "But why not? I mean, some of us are skilled enough to skip studies."

The left hand flew up with a bit of a flare, palm pointing straight at the fireplace. Nothing happened, not a thing. Yet, he didn't appear fazed by this at all, he only lowered his hand with a warm, pleased expression.

Eyes had to flicker over cautiously before Quitt felt at ease enough to turn again. At least his brother was easy going about his sometimes frantic requests concerning the patch. "No, it is that bad. And gross." The boy slid one leg closer to himself, just to rest his elbow on his knee as he chewed thoughtfully on his lip. "Have I been talking? I...never really keep track." His face lit up with a smile before he chuckled. "Sides, what could I possibly have to say? Do tell, oh my spy brother!"

Even just this talk of sleep was some sort of wondrous curse. Here he was, already yawning just because of the topic. Slapping a hand over his mouth, the brother sent a light glare at Euim. Not only for his clam facade with Quitt's empty accusations, but with his own slight flaunting of talent. ><

Feathers and ears perked as Euim's hand caught a spark, and that same light shone in Quitt's eyes as he watched on in interest. Just when had Euim found time to practice unnoticed?! Expectantly, he let his eyes trail to the fireplace.

1 second.
3 seconds.
10 seconds.

"Pffffft!" The boy curled in on himself as his laughter caused a cramp in his gut. Why, he even slapped the dusty ground with his own palm in all his humor. "My god E! What the hell was that?" >xD

It probably didn't come as a surprise that when he was prompted to speak concerning is own accusations, he came up with nothing. It took some sort of obvious mental effort to summon the excuse he finally did. But, just to make it more believable, he put on a serious face. "Who knows. It's impossible to decipher the things you talk about sometimes." That wasn't quite the truth. After all, his brother had spoken only a few things that he could actually remember and it wasn't as if they were anything long or varied enough to be considered a self-conversation.

Shrugging, he had moved into his display with ease. It was only while he waited for his brother's reaction that his proud little smile began to diminish into something vaguely bored. That didn't last long, of course. No, he hadn't expected to be praised or commended. He hadn't expected to fail so quickly, either, but that was a different story. When his attempts to play it off with a smile had proved unsuccessful in holding off the laughter, he puffed out his cheeks.

"Quittaaaance," he moaned out pitifully, a name he rarely used unless frustrated or angry. Of course, both of those situations were also fairly rare where his brother was concerned. And even now it looked as if he were forcing back a grin as best he could. "I promise I'm better than that, I just can't... you know-" His palms tapped against his legs again as he looked for the right away to say it.

"Anyway, I'm better than you, right?" He laughed, knowing that it wasn't really true. He needed a lot of friction to summon a good flame yet, which, in some ways, was one of the sources of the generally wild, flailing hand gestures that had become part of his person. Waving his hand, he was able to call a bit of fire to it. "There!

Well that was no fun answer, the smug brat playing innocent. Quitt pouted at his brother, but decided against calling him out. 'Sides, it was more fun and casual to communicate this way. Almost as fun as it was to laugh, like this very moment.

Nearly hiccuping with his sharp laughs, the silver haired brother grit his teeth to his cheek while waving a hand loosely. Oh dear, now he'd done it! Opening joy-teared eyes, Quitt grinned at his whimpering brother while placing his hand to his shoulder in comfort. "Ya can't, what? There's nothing holding you back as far as I can see. Haha, if anything I'm more a distraction than focus for your studies. No worries!"

But at that point, whether intentional or not is unknown, Quitt left Euim's question hanging as he moved to stand in a stretch. With a pop of his shoulders up and his back down, he flicked his tail and rested his hands on his hips. His dark form was soon highlighted with one of Euim's miniature sparks, this one a bit more stable and strong. "Not bad, for a second try." Xj "In any case, this room is starting to bore me. How long have I been in here now, stalker brother? Maybe four hours now, at least."

Quitt sighed with a minute sag to his from, before quirking a brow at his kin. "Any place you'd have to recommend visiting? Either way, I bet they're all as dusty as this spot." Even so, with how worn and abandoned this place appeared, it was still oddly a fond hangout for the sashed brother. He couldn't pinpoint why, and never bothered to mention so.

The spark died away from his hands almost as quickly as it had come. Without continuous movement, he found it difficult to keep even such a tiny flame burning. But last time he practiced, which turned out to be more like playing around, he had almost caught the curtains on fire with his flailing. That had put the idea in even his thick skull that sending flickering sparks in all directions was probably a bad idea. Next time something would go up in smoke.

Still, regardless of how short lived the magic had been this time, he looked even more pleased than before now that he had received his brother's praise. A grin stretched his lips as he moved to stand as well, brushing his hands against his legs and up to his cloak as if just sitting on this dusty old floor would make every part of him dirty.

"No, no, it was more like five or six hours," Euim corrected jokingly as he now brushed off his bum. "You must have been more into it than I thought, letting all that time pass without noticing." Then again, at least his sibling had been doing something constructive. The same couldn't be said for him. Unless stalking had become a respectable occupation while he was asleep. No, that couldn't be, that was just silly.

Curling a finger under his chin, he fell into thought. It was true that nothing was particularly well kept here. When it wasn't brought up in conversation, he hardly noticed it. Of course, he did still brush himself off religiously on a regular basis. It had become ingrained, something he never even noticed anymore. If he ever had noticed it. He couldn't remember. For now, he only had to ponder a moment longer before his eye lit up and the smile shot back to his face.

"I know, let's go outside! Some fresh air would be nice. Inhaling all this dust is gonna make me sick." He coughed on cue, covering his mouth with his fist. "Sicker, I mean." Now that he was actually thinking about the less than cleanly surroundings, he would use that to his advantage.

As the little flame died, the room returned to its gloomy-gray overtone. Quitt had to blink his eyes at the observed change, as if waking up even after his studies. It was almost eerie, to notice how their vibrant feathers were glossy under the flame's light. But once gone, they looked desaturated with dust coating their fibers...like some sort fo invisible illness. Oh yeah, they definitely needed to get out of here. Or else he feared they'd look like marble statues.

Flinching as his brother caused a cloudy pat-down, Quitt waved a hand to try and filter the air. However, he was too lazy to care to dust himself off. "Please, you exaggerate dear brother! Wouldn't my legs have fallen asleep with all that time?" Although now that he mentioned it and was standing, he was starting to feel the uncomfortable tingle at the base of his feet. He shifted his weight from side to side, trying to play off the sensation. "In any case, it was a good read. I mean, at least the pages with the pictures were. Haven't I caught you with a book or two, at least once before?"

Bending slowly to pick up his forgotten book, the boy twitched an ear as he closed the book and swept off its cover. "Outside?" His voice sounded like that of a bat asked to leave its cave in broad daylight. Even though he was such an active individual, he was also such a homebody at random times. Perhaps cause the outside was such a wide world that he felt small against it. "I suppose we can, although the weather is changing you know. Might not be all that pleasant." But his debate died on his tongue as he heard his brother cough, and he lowered his ears with a pout. Fake or not, his brothers well-being was always number 1 on his list.

And so setting aside his opinion, Quitt snirked and waved his hand in a beckoning manner. "Well then, what are we waiting for?" Heading for the doorway, he grasped almost hesitantly at the dull knob. Nodding, both to himself and Euim, he pulled open the door and peered outside.

PostPosted: Mon Nov 14, 2011 7:26 am

"Mmmm...." Once the cover of the book was at least somewhat cleaner than it had been, Euim slipped it from his sibling's fingers, turning it over one, twice, three times before flipping it open. Some of the spells stretched out for pages and he just had to wrinkle his nose. And pictures? What pictures? Instructional drawings of old, bearded mages didn't count. "The books I like are much more interesting than this," he joked, thoughtfully closing the tome. "Actual stories, you know. Detectives solving mysteries, princes slaying dragons to rescue their princesses…" Although in actuality, he wasn't much of a reader. Worlds of fantasy only served to remind him that his life wasn't promised a happy ending. And when he was dropped unceremoniously back into reality at the end of a good story, the sense of completion he felt was always overrun by that stronger sense of heaviness he tried to ignore. He preferred to find happiness in the real. His happiness was here, with his brother, and being able to see it through the gloom made it all the more special. Almost thoughtlessly, he brushed a hand over his eye patch.

Handing the book back, he grinned. "Yes, outside. It's good for you." There was hardly a minute of hesitation, even when it came to the changing weather and less than comfortable conditions. "It'll be fine, I'm sure it's not that cold yet." Even if it was, he would just keep them out for a short time. The thoughts of fresh air and sunshine were now far too ingrained in his head to be let go so easily.

"It's fine, righ-" The beckoning hand caught his attention before he could finish and the corners of his lips curled even higher. "Alright!" Giggling lightly under his breath, he trotted after his brother. Hands danced impatiently in front of him as he waited for the door to be opened and the outside world to come spilling in. Nearly bumping his head against the other's in an attempt to peek out, he jostled and maneuvered the now open door wide enough that he could slip right out.

Well, it was a bit nippy. The sun wasn't particularly shiny, either, but it was bright enough that he had to momentarily shield his good eye. Dead, dried leaves blew past, but most of the foliage had already gathered in mushy, rotting piles at the sides of the path. Not pretty, but not dusty or dark. And as long as they kept to the garden in the back, they were less likely to run into anyone coming or going. Including their father, whom Euim had seen stepping out before he took to stalking his brother in the study.

"C'mon, Q! Q!" he called, turning back and holding out his hand.

"Hm." The blue brother hardly disputed the novel leaving his grasp, instead watching as Euim mused over it. Whatever his motivation may be...and Quitt highly doubted it was to actually read, Euim had effectively caught his siblings attention to move the discussion forward. Was the appeal of going outside the residence truly that exciting for the other? "Oh? But that would be a statment of opinion, dear brother! Why read it, when we could be the detectives ourselves, solving the mysteries of these spells. Eh?" Then he hiccuped a laugh while placing the back of his hand against his far cheek, as if to whisper a secret. "Is that wanton complaining I hear? Waiting for your own prince to arrive, are you?"

It was enough of a tease to cause Quitt to skip away from the other once the book was successfully back in his hands. Sure he could be pinned for being a silly optimist, he was no blind fool. Despite his brother's light-hearted demeanor and open kindness, there was a somberness there as well that could be read like an open book. But the very notion made Quitt ill, knowing his brother deserved more than to accept a life collecting dust on a shelf like everything else in their home. And with that thought making his bones feel hollow, the boy slipped the spell book from his fingers, letting it fall forgotten on the dingy couch as he passed.

"Are you sure of it now? This door knob feels mighty cold." He twitched his ears and eeped as he was forced to lean back, or else face clonking skulls with his eager brother. The motion was enough of a slip to allow Euim to dart by without a challenge, and Quitt staggered to regain balance. The door played a lovely assistance in that task, its momentum heaving Quitt upright and swinging outside the threshold. And omg was it freezing outside! ono A shiver instantly crept up his back, and the boy was forced to clasp his shoulders to stop himself from giving an embarrassing spasm.

Well, it was no dream come true outside. In fact it looked almost as depressing as it was indoors. Except for the faint hum of....life, pulsing in the air and almost paralyzing Quitt with a sensory overload. From the stench of rotten leaves to the haunting chirp of insects, and even the rugged texture under his hooves. All of it was proof to another vast existance beyond his own....and it was frightening.

"E....." Dual-toned eyes scanned back and forth with hesitation, before settling on his brother. "Keep it down, would you?! Do ya want Soul to find us so soon?"
