Heliosyne

Glowbugs, glowbugs, where were they? A Di'taki was creeping around through the undergrowth, movements jerky and slightly uncoordinated as she stalked her prey - that didn't exist. For quite awhile now, she'd been seeing strange lights flitting around, but then they'd disappeared. Now she remained, looking for them to no avail, and looking silly while she was at it.

She never thought about what might happen if she came across another Di'taki, mostly 'cause she never thought about anything.

Haze rested against the water side. Glowbugs skittered against the water. It was rather a beautiful sight to see. He sighed in contentment as he rested his head against the tree roots. He loved staring across the waters of Lake Ha'tooka.

What he loved most was the adrenaline he experienced from being so close to the enemy, the Di'taki. It was rather foolish, being so close. But he knew he was safe as long as he didn't go into the forest across the lakes. One day... he would face one.

The idea of being able to go against a cursed one was thrilling. It made Haze's blood burn. But not now. Maybe when he is an adult. At this time and night, he was content with just watching the glowbugs and celebrating the festival even with the Di'Taki.

Suddenly she was out of the woods and in front of a great lake. Heliosyne whined as her prey flitted out across Lake Ha'tooka, leaving her behind on the shore. Taking a big, deep breath, she launched herself into the water, sloshing about messily as she continued her chase. That glowbug wasn't going to get away! Of course, there were dozens around, but she wanted that one.

She didn't notice that she was swimming directly towards an Adahy on the opposite shore.

He rushed to his feet as sounds of vigorous splashing game from the water. Haze looked over to the source of the noise. What... is that? He pinched his eyes to get a better view. He took a step back with a gasp. A Di'Taki! To go back to the tribe and warn them or to face it directly.

He was no coward! Haze stood his ground as the cursed one swam closer to the floor. "Halt! Go back before you regret it Di'Taki. You are not welcome here."

The Di'taki's head snapped up as she approached the shoreline, temporarily forgetting her quarry. What was this? A Di'taki without four ears? Oh, those Adahy-things. What was one of them doing out here, in the middle of the festival? Though she heard his voice, she couldn't comprehend the aggression in it, or the consequences if she disobeyed the child. Instead she simply grinned stupidly, clambering up out of the water next to him.

"Hi." She tilted her head at an odd angle, looking him up and down. Heliosyne had never seen one of these things before they were full grown before. Then she caught sight of something on the water - another glowbug! Her mind switched tracks like a leaf blown by the wind, and she began to stretch over the water, trying to reach to the bug with her tongue.

Tch. Haze took a step back as the large Di'Taki rushed towards him with no logical reason. He bared his teeth to attack, but it seems like the foolish Di'Taki wasn't going to listen to any of his warnings! "Go back where you come from before you regret it!" Just as unexpectedly as her running towards him, suddenly the Di'Taki decided to go back to the water! What's with this crazy thing before him? He gave the creature a strange look before looking towards his glowbug, North. "I think she's mental North. What do you think we should do?"

North only fluttered in reply. "Thanks... you're a huge help you freakin' moth! Maybe I should feed you to her, at least she might stop acting so strangely!"

Totally ignoring the male's words, she continued to watch the glowing orb retreat farther across the water. Once out of sight, her eyes snapped to the glowbug near the Adahy, all ten blinking in unison. For a moment she seemed almost sentient, and Heliosyne looked to the Adahy. "Friend?" She gestured between the Adahy and the bug. If he could get a glowbug of his own, she wanted one too! They were so pretty and shiny. She scanned the glowmoth, marveling over its silver wings, clearly entranced by him.

Haze looked at the Di'Taki that was floating in the deep river. "Y- yes..." He stared at her with a strange look. "North is my friend." It didn't seem like this Di'Taki was much of a threat... Certainly not something he could be proud about if he defeated her or chased her off. Why, he was quiet puzzled on what to do with her!

"Have you been chasing glowbugs this entire time? Are there none in the forests where you live?"

Oooh, so they were friends. For a moment, she tried to think of how to obtain a glowy pretty thing of her own, but her immature mind quickly forgot what he had said and moved on to the next subject. Heliosyne nodded vigorously in response to the child's question. "Lots. But not as pretty," she gestured to some of the glowbugs out on the pond - some glowed with an eerie dark light, while others were much brighter. In reality, the glowbugs on both sides were likely the same, but Heliosyne believed her excuse for now.

Returning from her tangent on glowbugs, she peered back at the Adahy, suddenly curious. "Name?"

He hesitated to give his name. "What is your name? You never introduced yourself, trespasser."

It was hard to wrap his mind around the Di'Taki. It wasn't a threat, but was not an ally either. She did know the difference between light from far away and close up... didn't she?

"The festival is to celebrate the glowbugs- they bond quickly with the Adahy. There are many to choose from, have you not been able find your own?"

Slowly, as though with difficulty, the female managed to hiss out "Heliosyne." It was quite a complicated name, especially for one such as herself. Her head whirled from side to side dramatically as he asked his question - she hadn't been able to find a Glowbug of her own, unfortunately. For a moment, she felt a soft burn in her chest, jealous. It quickly faded, considering she couldn't understand the origin of the feeling and therefore couldn't sustain it.

"Help me?" The Di'taki gestured towards the Adahy's Glowbug. She was apparently intent on getting one of her own.

Why Haze almost laughed at the girl as she shook her head as if there was an animal biting her neck. He couldn't help but crack a smile at the sight. "My name is Haze. Rather simple compared to such a name as yours."

Now... to help her or not. Haze supposed it was the spirit of the festival to help everyone enjoy the celebration. "I suppose. Glowbugs like to gather in a field not too far from here. Now... I'm only helping you this one time! You better not come near my tribe's lands after the festival or I won't be so forgiving!"

He gave a slight snarl as he spoke but walked towards the forest. "Hurry or I'll leave you behind. Come on North."

North only fluttered in reply. Again.

Haze...That name seemed familiar somehow. Heliosyne forgot this odd coincidence quickly, however, and began to make soft, happy noises as she clambered after the child. She couldn't comprehend why she wasn't supposed to be here, as usual, nor did she notice the snarl. Instead, she chirped to him, "Thank you!" She might not have been able to use full sentences, but she was polite at least.

Grunt. "You're welcome."

The path curved and slowly lead to a brightly lit open field. Glow bugs littered the area making the opposite side of the field impossible to see through the bodies of bugs. "It's there."

He swiftly turned his head to Heliosyne. "If you don't find a glowbug here... you're hopeless as you seem." Suddenly he flicked his ears towards the dark forest. Other Adahy. Great... they would see him with her! He grumbled and moved out of sight. Maybe he won't be seen.

From his hiding place he saw two adult male Adahy walk into the distance, occasionally clashing horns in a playful manner. They were rough and loud... And froze on the spot as they saw Heliosyne.

Heliosyne was totally mesmerized by the field. Never before had she seen so many insects, with so many colors and glows. She couldn't find it in her to move and chase them. It was so wonderfully overwhelming. There was red and blue and yellow and gray and a dozen other colors she (nor anyone else) knew. Naturally, she didn't even see the two male Adahy.

Someone did, though. From the cluster of insects came one, eerily familiar to anyone who may have been watching. His wings glowed a bright, bright orange, contrasting sharply with his fire-brick body. He alighted down on the Di'taki's head, fluttering his wings at the male Adahy. A sign, perhaps?
