I still do not see why we needed to remain at that feast for so long. There were too many people there.

Oh quit your complaining. We've finally finished moving, G'brel replied as she placed down the last of her belongings in their new bunk. Starting the following morning their lessons and chores were going to be busier than ever before likely, but at least they wouldn't have any time for getting bored.

You become bored entirely too easily, the Blue remarked with mild amusement as he settled himself down into his new place for the night. Hm, this will do. I do rather hope that those staying with us are of the quiet sort.

G'brel smiled faintly at this. I suppose we shall find out. She had met Akaya before, and the Harper apprentice had seemed a sensible enough sort. Her dragon, however, she wasn't so sure on. Things were likely to be interesting for certain. Across their mental connection the young teen could already feel her dragon's mind drifting off into a thoughtful sort of state.

Whatever hopes Lifth may have harbored about quiet roommates were abruptly and completely shattered when the small stripy green frolicked into the barracks with a slightly worn-out Akaya following after clutching a sack with all the possessions she'd brought with her when Searched. The very first thing Sleeth did was her circling--Akaya was beginning to become used to the odd habit--around Lifth and G'brel, several circuits, before trilling an enthusiastic greeting with a sound that sounded far more likely to come from a firelizard than a dragon (even if the dragon was quite young and undersized). Hello! I am Sleeth! And this is Akayamine! Did you enjoy the feast? Wasn't it nice? I met so many people~

"Sleeth, darling, I do think it's best to make sure people would like to hear you before you go barging around enthusing at them," Akaya said, rueful as she set about unpacking what little she had to unpack. A few small instruments and music made up the bulk of it, though she had a few odd trinkets and extra clothing besides. It was a few moments before she realized she hadn't properly greeted her roommate, and she looked up quickly. "Ah, it's G'brel now, isn't it? You changed your name. I didn't think there was any dignified way to shorten mine--A'kya kind of sounds like someone's being strangled--so I kept mine the same."

Nope, definitely no such luck on the quiet thing. Lifth's eyes whirled with mild agitation at his thoughts being interrupted by his exuberant clutchmate, but his tone was polite enough when he replied. The feast was... busy, he replied cryptically, not answering her question outright of whether or not he enjoyed it. It is good to be in our own private space. Although that opinion may well change soon enough depending on how long the Green was intent on making conversation.

Heh, looks like we're in for an interesting couple of month's ahead of us, G'brel thought to herself, mildly amused by this turn of events. "Hello, Akaya. Good to see ya again. Yup, changed my name to G'brel, but I don't care if you call me otherwise. I suppose you could have also gone with A'ya, but Akaya still works as well." Not all female riders chose to change their names after all, so it was really a matter of personal choice. The teen grinned happily. "Can you believe we are actually Jr. Weyrlings now? It seems almost like a dream still."

I most certainly am not a dream, Lifth said privately to His, although if my clutchmate here remains as active as she currently is we may never dream again.

G'brel has to stifle a giggle at that remark. "Ah, I don't believe I've introduced you to my partner here. His name is Lifth."

"See now, I hadn't even thought of that. Still, I don't mind and I suppose it doesn't much matter," Akaya said, with a contented shrug of the shoulders. And she was all smiles along with G'brel at the reminiscing of their Impressions. "It does, somewhat. It's one thing to know and another to know--" She broke off into laughter, and shook her head. "I'm just babbling on."

Akaya inclined her heads towards the blue dragonet respectfully when introduced. "It's nice to meet you, Lifth. And Sleeth took care of our side of introductions--stop circling, dear."

Sleeth obediently came to a stop near Akaya's bunk, though clearly she was still full of energy, talons tapping lightly against the floor. It is nice to have a space for us, isn't it? Akayamine said the candidate barracks were much more crowded and while I wouldn't have minded having the others I suppose it would be awfully difficult when we start getting bigger. She seemed absolutely oblivious to any discomfort Lifth might have been experiencing, or wish for privacy, as she chattered his mental ear off.

"Nah, you're not rambling at all," G'brel replied, waving off her remark. "I know what you mean though. It's totally surreal, but in a very awesome way."

Lifth inclined his head politely toward Akaya, and was rather grateful when she told Sleeth to stop circling them. Yes, this Green was certainly going to be a troublesome one. Yes, growing dragons in a crowded space would not have worked well, the Blue agreed. We will be rather large when we have matured. There had been plenty of adult dragons around at the Hatching to verify that fact, and their mother had been quite large. Well, his mother anyway. Somehow he could tell that Sleeth wasn't actually a blood clutchmate, although he wasn't even entirely sure how he knew this.

"Very much so!" Akaya agreed, and then she turned thoughtful. "Ooh, I suppose I should write a letter to my folks--I'm sure they'll find out sooner or later but they'd appreciate hearing it from their own daughter--hah, my brothers are going to be soo jealous!" Once again she came to a belated realization that G'brel might not quite understand; surely even 'weyrbrats' were aware of their blood sibs though. "Since you're from here, you probably know some of the others who Impressed, eh?"

You will always be larger than me, Sleeth said pragmatically--apparently the green had a talent for stating the obvious. And many of the others larger than us both. Our room must be smaller than the rooms for the larger dragonets. I wonder if they feel emptier... She didn't dwell long on the "philosophical" thought, and cocked her head to one side. But we will have fun, yes? There was a hidden question in the obvious one--an edge of dangling for approval from her blue roommate.

"Oh yeah... I wonder if my foster-mom was at the Hatching," G'brel remarked thoughtfully. She hadn't seen much of the woman since becoming a candidate (which was more than fine by her), but she supposed she did at least owe her the courtesy of a brief letter or visit sometime. "I guess I'll get around to telling her eventually." She smiled brightly at Akaya's second question. "Of course! I think pretty much all of my candidate friends impressed this time around. Excellent Turn for most of us, I must say." She greatly looked forward to Weyrling training with them. This time she wasn't the one being left behind while her friends became riders.

We shall have to see, he replied simply. The blue didn't doubt that the two of them had very different definitions of 'fun'. In the time it will take for us to grow, there will doubtless be moments of fun mixed in with the work and tribulations. 'Tribulation' ranging in meaning as anything from long hours and lessons to precious moments of peace being interrupted by a social bunkmate.
PostPosted: Sun Aug 08, 2010 7:33 pm

"You'll have to introduce me--I barely know anyone right now," Akaya admitted, though she had no doubt that'd change quickly enough, G'brel's help or not. The weyrlings would be living and working and seeing more than their fill of each other for the next months while their dragons grew and they all trained together--there were few things better for forging close bonds of fellowship than shared tribulation. There was a lot of hard work ahead.

Sleeth did not seem dissuaded by the cryptic reply--it was not outright negative, and that meant it was positive, to the little green anyway. I and Mine will make sure you and Yours have fun, she said cheerfully.

"Heh, no problem! I don't know too many of the girls that well actually, but I have a couple of pretty awesome guy friends I could introduce you to," she said cheerful. "Although one of them has been acting like a bit of a wherryhead recently, so I'm hoping his dragon will snap him out of it soon. Things will likely get better when Benden leaves though." Which would probably be any time now, considering that the Hatching was past. She wouldn't be sad to see them gone-- except maybe for one Bronze from earlier. "Hey, have you seen any of the Benden dragons up close? There was this one Bronze dragon earlier that we met, and it was totally the strangest thing ever. In a funny way though. He was absolutely besotted with Lifth and Luvith-- although I think he might be that way around any dragonets personally. Very sweet and personable really. Took me rather by surprise considering what happened with that other Benden Bronze."

Lovely, he replied. The Blue's interest was soon capture by the conversation between His and Sleeth's. He was certainly an odd sort, he agreed, puzzling a bit as he thought over the Bronze again. He said his name was Galvanth.

Akaya gathered the friend acting like a wherryhead was directly tied to Benden's presence, and guessed said friend was probably Weyrborn as well--had taken Alumanth's death to heart. Yes, that would be somewhat difficult... "No, I haven't," she said, just as curious as G'brel to the bronze's behavior. It was generally out of character for such a high ranking dragon to behave so familiarly, she'd think. "Well, there are all kinds," she added with a little shrug. She refrained from adding that it hadn't been the other bronze's fault--really, she figured herself to be something of an outlier on that position and there was no need to stir up something with her roommate if she felt elsewise. Maybe G'brel agreed, maybe she didn't--it wasn't as if it really mattered to either of them, in the long run.

In any case, she wasn't at all familiar with Benden's dragons, and only had a passing familiarity with Fort's ranking riders, since it was Fort Weyr the Harper Hall lay beside. "It's good that he was making friends though, isn't it? Trine could use a Benden bronze on their side, I'd say--one willing to coo over even little atypical dragons," she said wisely, recognizing vaguely Luvith as one of the crimsons--not Sleeth's clutchsister, from Brakiath's, she was sure.

Are older dragons normally not fond of us?
Sleeth asked, using 'us' as to refer to 'dragonets'--after all, she was one.

"I think they prefer to wait until you are older and more sensible by their standards to associate with you," Akaya said, chuckling as she reached to scratch Sleeth's eye ridges in a reassuring gesture. "It's nothing personal, dear, it goes for human youth too. There are plenty of human adults who want nothing to do with human children."

G'brel didn't hold any of the rest of the Benden dragons responsible for the attack other than simply in the fact that they were there. Still, it was entirely amusing and unusual to see such a soft display of cooing from a bid, proud bronze. "All kinds indeed," G'brel said with a small laugh. "And he was certainly one of a kind. I think Lifth may have found his first friend."

He is a curiosity to me, he replied simply, neither confirming nor denying G'brel's statement.

Uh huh. That's all, G'brel replied, not fully believing the dragonet. He may have found the other perplexing, but how could one not like such a sweet Bronze? "Hm, that's rather true actually. I just hope he still thinks as kindly of Luvith even when she's grown," she said with a small frown.

Why shouldn't he? She will still be the same dragon.

Ah, right. G'brel had yet to fully explain the whole Benden affair to the young Lifth. "Well, part of what has led to problems with Benden recently is that they don't accept the Atypical colors-- Black, Crimson, and Silver-- as proper dragons." And one such strong disagreement between riders recently led to the death of Crimson Alumanth. Sleeth's mom, actually. And though she did not wish to think of it, the scene of the battle flashed briefly through her mind.

Lifth did not flinch at the mental image, instead turning thoughtful. Huh. You will have to explain recent happenings to me in more detail later. From the brief account and picture however, he could now understand why His had been surprised by the contrast between Galvanth and the bronze in the memory. There was likely more to the story though than met the eye.

"That would be the trick," Akaya agreed. "It may well be exposure alone could help matters along." And the hope that familiarity would not breed further contempt. "Still, s'out of our hands." She had been somewhat sympathetic to the Old Weyrs, and still was, but it was hard to agree with their policy knowing her own dragon had been born from a dragon who, in the north, would never have had the chance to live at all. If Trine did not hatch Atypicals, Sleeth would never have been born, and she would not be a dragonrider. When things were simplified down to that, there was no contest--why would any dragonrider deny a dragon the chance to live, knowing that another's life could be changed as theirs had been?

I am here with you,
Sleeth reassured Akaya, not really following the girl's broodings. What did it matter of might-have-beens when Sleeth was here now?

You're right,
Akaya agreed. "We probably ought to be more worried about what lies in our immediate future. The Candidatemaster stays Candidatemaster, doesn't he? There's a different rider who's the Weyrlingmaster?"

"Huh, you know, I hadn't thought of that. I suppose that's true," G'brel replied looking thoughtful for a second. "Ah, well, doesn't really matter. So long as it's not another proddy Greenrider, they can't be as bad as O'rer. Er, no offense," she added as an afterthought, realizing that she was talking to a Greenrider.

Smooth, Lifth remarked to his, not the slightest bit concerned about the teachers, but amused by his rider's slip nonetheless.

Oh shush, you. I didn't mean her when I was referring to Greenriders. Just making a general statement of truth. Proddy Greens usually result in ill-tempered riders.
PostPosted: Sun Aug 08, 2010 9:22 pm

"Ah, none taken," Akaya replied, the vaguest sense of puzzlement settling across the girl's otherwise pleasant expression. She wasn't entirely sure what 'proddy' meant, and the fact that G'brel had immediately backpedaled with an apology meant that it probably wasn't a polite term. Was it meant to refer specifically to greenriders?

"I suppose we'll see soon enough, on the matter of the weyrlingmaster." And she did hope for someone more pleasant than O'rer, whomever they might be.

I am sure they will be fine,
Sleeth said--and Akaya smiled. It was hard to remain in any sort of down state with Sleeth around for cheering on. And we will all do well!
