Shalar was in a good mood, he had spent the evening away from his family in a secluded place and simply watched as the fireflies and creatures of the night moved and danced around him. It had been peaceful and warmed his soul, so much so that he still had a grin upon his face.
His curls bounced with each movement as he crossed over the river, his legs and tail now drenched as he held his wings up high to avoid them getting wet also -wet wings usually spelt trouble after all. The cool splashing of the gentle current did nothing to upset his mood. In fact, as the early morning sun started to caress and warm his pelt and the air around him he began to hum a gentle melody to himself as he envisioned a warrior charging into battle to save a fair lady from a dragon.
Yes, it was Shalar's goal to be a protector, to save those he loved from harm and for such a reason he would happily lay his own life on the line if would mean one of his few where saved or spared horrible pain. The very idea of those he loved being harmed or worst that he caused that pain would destroy a chunk of his soul.
And so, with an effort to distract himself he stopped on the bank and watched as the ghost like butterflies that followed him around danced and fluttered around him. How he envied them -they never seemed to have a care in the world. Never seemed to want for anything. Never seemed to be alone.

Her laugh carried on the wind. If there was anything she was known for, it was her laugh. Denika Lynn always found the lighter side in everything. She'd been awake the whole night, spending it exploring the land around her. It was different at night, much different from the day. She couldn't decide which one she liked better.
Extending her four wings, she used them to help propel herself up a small bank, leaping much higher than she would have if she hadn't used the aide of her wings. The breeze on top of the bank was gentle and cool, and she smiled. The sunrise was beautiful and now she had the perfect vantage point to watch it.

As Shalar continued up the hill he paused at the sight of an Angeni, his mother and father had told him and his siblings of this beings. Angels born of the Earth, many possessing powers over the world that many could only dream of. They where said to be the guardians of nature and the way of life, and it was considered lucky to cross paths with one even for a moment. And as Shalar watched and listened to the sing song laughter he felt like retreating, he had never met an Angeni before and despite being curious he wasn't sure he could be around someone so chirpy and happy this early in the morning, especially a stranger.
He usually avoided strangers. Seeking instead solitude and quiet so he could perfect his medatative techniques and fighting skills. But there was something..... well something, about this mare that made him want to join her.
Feeling a little uneasy and unsure of himself he moved slowly towards her. A few paces away he bowed low as a sign to her that he intended her no harm, and smiled before speaking, "I hope I am not interupting fair Maiden, please..." he started before a light blush covered his usually white cheeks, "...share with me what is so funny." It was rare that Shalar ever laughed unless it was sarcastic and directed at his sisters, but again there was something about this mare that made him want to laugh along with her.

She turned when she heard someone approach, her smile faltering for just a moment. Her mother had always warned her not to wander off like she did and to be more careful. Perhaps she should have listened. A bit nervous, her heart caught in her throat--that is, until she realized who was standing in front of her. While large, he certainly didn't look like a threat. And he was smiling, that was a good sign!
Her smile came back and she couldn't help but laugh again. "Well, nothing in particular," she chirped, moving closer to him, examining him further. His wings were unlike any she had ever seen before. They were so interesting!
"Isn't the sunrise beautiful? The colours are so vibrant." Turning back to look again, she smiled. "Its such a lovely day, and its just starting!"

He was used to others staring at him as if trying to figure out if his unusual head things and wings meant he was a threat -especially since they oftened appeared Kalona like at first glance, in truth they where the flutter parts he had inherited from his mother for her wings where delicate but segmented into several sections. On her there was no mistaking her for a flutter but on him with the addition of his fathers feathers it was no quite so obvious. However if he spread them out it would be possible to see the purple patterned detail that usually reminded him of butterflies and spring.
Shalar looked at her for a moment longer before raising from his bow and walking up the hill slightly for a better view of the sunset. "Yes, it is beautiful." He paused for a moment, "Have you heard the story about why their are so many colours?" She flashed her a toothy grin, it had been his faviourite story as a foal -he had insisted several times that his father tell him it again and again.
He turned to look once more before realising he had forgot to introduce himself, he supposed it just showed how unuse to interacting with others he really was. Taking a deep breath he turned to face the Angeni mare once more, "Please forgive my ignorance - I am Shalar, at your service." And once more he bowed to her, before rising and turning to watch the colours dance in the sky. Two fractions warring together. And as always day would win, yet later on when the same thing happened night would win... it was a chain that could never be broken.

She laughed again. It wasn't because she found anything particularly funny, or that she was laughing at him, she just liked to laugh. When the pleasant sound had faded she dipped into a bow herself. "Its a pleasure to meet you, Shalar. My name is Denika Lynn." Another laugh and she turned back to look at the sunset once more.
"No, I don't think I've heard that story. Please, do share! I'd love to hear it now. It sounds like a good one." She rustled her wings together excitedly, bouncing around much like an eager foal.

Shalar smiled softly at and nodded before looking to her rather than the sunset. Part of him wanted to try and capture the magic his father usually had when telling the tale but he knoew it was unlikely he would ever manage to do such a thing though - he loved his father telling the story.
"So...." he said as he faced the sunset once more, "it is believed that a sunset appears whenever Day and Night have a fight, you see just like any siblings they don't alays see eye to eye, but in the case of Day and Night they fight over who should be around longer." He grinned softly and turned back to her, absentmindedly he flicked his tail playfull -he had to admit it though, he was actually enjoying himself even if just a little.
"Day believed they where the best because in the day butterflies dance and laughter can be seen, the world seems happier and brighter somehow. But Night always agrues that just as many beautiful things happen at night. Fireflies glow and shimmer like magic, couples share secret moments and at night the world really does come alive with creatures of every sort." He chuckled softly, perhaps her random laughter was contatigious? "And so.... they sent their armies forth, the darkness and the light. As they dance and duel under the twilight of the world the colour of each of their armies merges. But no matter how many times they duel the one that is meant to have their turn always wins. Morning breaks into day, and evening into night. It is the way of things, a constant battle of wills." Ok, maybe on reflection that wasn't exactly the friendlist of stories perhaps, but he really did like the idea of the sky fighting over who should lick the world for just a moment longer. The fight.... it was something everyone had to experience. Of course Shalar was training to be a warrior, so it was likely he would see war and hardship at some point in his life.

Watching him eagerly as he began, she listened to the story with a smile on her face. As he got further into the tale of the night and day battling each other for reign of the sky, she turned back to the horizon and watched the very tale he told unfold. She could see it happening, just as he was describing. The dark colours of the night were being pushed back and fading into the warm colours of morning. The purples, and pinks and reds and oranges and blues... It was beautiful, stunning. It made her smile even more.
"I don't know which I prefer either!" she laughed, turning to grin at him. "I must feel like the sky feels. I like night and day equally!"

Shalar smiled at her response, she seemed to be listening and enjoying the tail just as much as he use to when his father told it -and despite his certainity that h had missed something out it didn't seem to matter. He watched as he face lit up with a smile, it seemed to soften all her features.
"Me either...." He looked to the ground for a moment, "I spent last night out here with the fireflies and the owls and such - only to return to the soft caress of the morning sun." He titled his head as if to pretend to think about it, "Maybe we should both take a lesson from the sky? And try to appreciate both?"
As his eyes drifted to the colours of the sunrise and a cool morning breeze brushed over his pelt he had the sudden idea to go hunting for something unique. Closing his eyes he took a deep breath for confidence, it really was strange wanting the company of someone out of his family afterall, and turned to face Denika once more. A soft smile upon his face, "I was wondering if you would like to join me for breakfast? Maybe afterwards we can go look for some flowers and such to take back to my sisters?" And once the words had left his lips he waited.

She nodded, she had done much the same, and she found that the morning was just as enjoyable as the night she had spent frolicking in the fields. Fireflies and butterflies, she loved them both. "I agree! How can anyone possibly choose between either!" she cried, gesturing around. "There's too much beauty in the world, no matter what time of day it is."
His invitation caught her a bit by surprise, she hadn't really been expecting him to ask such a thing, but she smiled and agreed. "Of course! That sounds lovely." At the mention of his sisters, she seemed even more intriqued. "You have sisters? Oh, tell me what they're like. I haven't seen my sister in so long. I miss her." She almost looked sad for just a moment, but it quickly passed and her smile came back. "I bet they're really pretty! They'd have to be if they look anything like you."

"Indeed." Was all he said about their previous topic before his attention was turned fully towards his family.
He loved his family dearly and he was sure it showed upon his face, of the three of them he was considered the oldest due to popping from his basket about ten minutes before his siblings. "They are called Nienna and Lilybane. A pair of trouble makers if I ever saw them, and this..." he shook his head so that his curls bounced and a single petal fell from the roses that had been threaded into it. "...is all their doing. I know I know..." he said with a soft sigh, "I look girly, but it makes them happy." He laughed, actually laughed as he looked Denika. "You see.... they believe that if I make an effort to look nice... well...." He looked away, and rolled his eyes in an effort to make it seem as if he didn't care, and hopefully avert her eyes away from the soft rose blush that had begun to cover his cheeks once more. "...that it will help me find a mate one day. But yeah.... they are pretty."
Coughing softly, with no idea why he had divulged so much about himself or his family. He usually considered such an act a threat to them -as if it would somehow place them all in danger, something he never wanted to do. He was a protector and as such he would happily die protecting those he loved. "So.... do you have siblings?" He would have added 'if you do I am sure they are as beautiful as you' but his courage and his voice for speaking such words failed him. Instead he patiently watched and waited, he had noted for a moment that she had seemed sad at the mention of his sisters, but he hoped that maybe, just maybe, talking about he own will bring a smile to her face. Sometimes remembering the good side of someone helped you live with them or their memory.

As he talked about his sisters, she couldn't hide her smile. She listened without interruption, only laughing when he told her that his appearance was due to his sisters' handiwork. She didn't laugh because she thought it was funny, she laughed because she thought it was cute. His curls and the roses suited him very well, and she couldn't imagine him without them. She didn't think he looked girly in the slightest. She'd describe him as dashing.
And she told him so. "I don't think you look girly in the slightest! I think it suits you, very much. Your sisters have good taste, and its very sweet of you to humour them so, Shalar. They sound wonderful." She smiled sweetly, if albeit a bit bittersweet. Her voice went soft as she answered his next question. "I do have a sister. I haven't seen her in a very long time though. I miss her. Her smile could light up the world..."

"Ah...." he blushed at her words, he really didn't know what to do around those of the opposite sex, after all he didn't really consider his sisters or mother a part of them, they where just.... well them.
"I am so sorry about you sister," He wanted to offer to help her look, to shield her from the pain she was feeling but he suspected that some pains could never be removed, and that she didn't know where to start looking. Or maybe, she already knew the fate of her sister. He tightened his heart at the mere thought of his own sisters going a stray, leaving and never returning. He knew he would look and probably never find them, he knew he would wonder about them every time he had a quite moment. And for that alone he did not envy this mare. Though he had to say one thing about Denika, she also had a smile that would light up the world.
In an effort to change the topic and hopefully see her warming smile once more he reminded her of his previous offer, "So.... breakfast. What would you prefer? There is a good patch of naturally ground carrots near by, a orchid of apple trees and maybe even a few berry bushes? Ladies choice." After all it was the only gentlemanly thing to do to allow her to decide. Shalar would eat anything, though he had to admit he had a soft spot for carrots.

"Thank you," she murmured, eyes downcast for a moment or two. She missed her sister more than anything, but she had no idea where she had gone. She'd only been young when they'd gotten separated, too young to go and look for her. When she'd gotten older, she hadn't know where to start looking. Sighing softly, she shook her head to dispel the thoughts for now, and looked back up at him, the smile inching back onto her face.
"Carrots and apples sound wonderful to me. Lead the way!"
