The Rider

Character Name: D’ru
Age: 30
Sexual Orientation: Homosexual
Craft/Rank: Dragonrider/Wingrider, Ancientcraft/Searcher; former Harper/Apprentice
History: D’ru was born as Daru, seventh child to a very fertile, but aging couple in Lemos. The youngest by ten years, Daru’s birth parents didn’t have the energy or resources to care for a newborn, so they reluctantly sent him to live with his Uncle Darrit who dwelled in Benden Hold. Uncle Darrit had a good heart, and took good care of Daru, but from an early age Daru could tell that there was something a bit odd about his caretaker. Darrit was a shoe cobbler, and outside the brief interactions with customers he rarely socialized. In fact, many of the inhabitants of Benden Hold seemed to shun Darrit, despite his skills in his craft.

Lacking playmates, young Daru had to find creative ways to amuse himself. In the rare cases that they’d manage to get their hands on ink and parchment, most children would make childish doodles. Daru, on the other hand, tried to imitate what writing he could find, finding the writing to be an intriguing mystery. When Darrit caught him he didn’t scold him, but instead sat him down and taught him what words and letters he knew. This, along with exploring the lands surrounding Benden Hold, occupied much of Daru’s childhood.

One day a visiting Harper had come to make use of Darrit’s services when he noticed Daru writing out an inventory list in the corner. He convinced Daru to become a Harper, tantalizing him with the chance to become a scribe. Daru left for Harper Hall, but was there for no more then two years when, at age 12, a search rider asked him to be a Candidate. Daru was interested in seeing what Weyr life was like, and didn’t have many friends among his fellow students, so he agreed.

Life in the Weyr was both better and worse then life in Harper Hall. He had less privacy, and was busier, but he found more uses for his talents. The staff in the Lower Cavens hardly cared that he wasn’t an actual scribe so long as he could keep an accurate inventory. He grew accustomed to his new position, and towards the end had forgotten about the possibility of becoming a dragonrider, right until he did.

Being a dragonrider was… well, different. Others looked upon D’ru the dragonrider with some measure of respect, even when his partner was still a young, bottomless pit. He was busy, very busy, but he had the novel experience of having a constant friend and companion. Once they were able to fly, Daru found pleasure in the added feeling of freedom. Of course, there is always too much of a good thing. With his newfound freedom, D’ru resumed his old, childhood pastime of exploring, but with a new goal: D’ru was looking for bits of the old technology left behind from AIVAS. Towards the end of his time living with his uncle he had realized that the reason so many people shunned Darrit was because he was an Ancientcraft Tinkerer. D’ru figured that when he had the time, he and his partner could search for new intriguing bits, and save them to be delivered to Darrit whenever chance allowed.

Description: If D’ru actually took care of himself he might look decent, but as it is it’s unlikely he’d be considered attractive. D’ru is tall, standing at 6’5”, and is gaunt. Gaunt, as used to refer to him, isn’t some fancy or incorrect synonym for lithe. No, he is literally underweight for his height and it shows. He has knobby knees, elbows and knuckles. He has a long, skinny neck, thin face, sharp chin, and prominent cheekbones. He has a large, hooked nose and eyebrows that are dangerously close to forming the Unibrow of Doom. His shoulder-length, dark brown hair, which he typically wears in a low ponytail, is straight and prone to frizz. Hooded, light hazel combined with his pale skin complete his odd appearance.

Personality: What happened, a flitt decided to try its claws at writing? Wait, that’s supposed to be your handwriting? No, no, no, that’s terrible! Get out of the way already, and hope that D’ru can read your flitt-scratch. Why didn’t you just get him in the first place? Shards…

When it comes to things that D’ru is good at or has some natural talent in, he is very impatient with people that are not as good as he. He simply can’t fathom why you can’t do it if he can do it; obviously you’re a dimglow. You’re lucky if you can get him to explain things once to you, much less multiple times. He was never particularly good at singing or playing any instruments – passable for a Harper, but not good – but proved to have a natural affinity for reading, writing, and research.

Thankfully, outside his areas of expertise D’ru is a more reasonable person, if not an especially likable one. He is very smart with books, but dumb with people. It’s difficult for him to empathize with others and on the rare chance that he notices body language he usually misinterprets it. When he has to make decisions he relies on logic and reason, not his heart, and as a result he may come off as aloof or callous. He can’t think fast on his feet, especially not in social situations, so he’s terrible at witty banter and flirting. As a matter of fact, D’ru tends to avoid large crowds of people whenever possible.

D’ru does have has redeeming qualities. He is honest, and although he doesn’t understand women he tries to be well mannered around them. He’s a very hard worker, so much so that he has been known to forget to eat or sleep in favor of completing a task. He can be an excellent secret keeper, but only if he understands why it should remain secret. Although he may not think fast on his feet and gets flustered from time to time, he never truly panics, meaning that he can handle highly stressful situations better then most. He’s good at problem solving thanks to his love of logic. As a dragonrider he is obedient and quick to follow orders. His only ambition in concerns to being a dragonrider is to be a good dragonrider; he doesn’t need or want a leadership position to be content.

Other: D'ru fits into the social scene better after Impressing then before, but that's not to say that he truly fits or blends in. He's liberally-minded, as exemplified by his choice to pursue Ancientcraft. That, combined with his vaguely favorable opinion of Atypicals, sets him apart from many inhabitants of Benden Weyr.

The Dragon

Name: Sinth
Colour: Blue
Personality: Sinth is a highly intelligent, highly inquisitive dragon who has some problems with patience. He picks things up rather quickly – usually within a few tries – but gets frustrated in waiting on and trying to explain the concept to others. He doesn’t seem to understand everybody has ways of understanding and learning and that not everyone has the same approach as he does. It’s happened often enough that he’s known for saying ‘Isn’t it obvious’ when his frustration peaks. It’s not that he’s trying to be sarcastic and hard to handle – he’s honestly trying to help you but there’s a disconnect he just doesn’t understand. He’s also a rather empathetic dragon, sensitive to the emotions of others so he can often tell the dragon, or person (he’s not above conversing with a human), is getting frustrated and it just leads back into his trouble with patience. Even so, he’s good at giving D’ru social clues, albeit from a more observational point of view then an emotional one.

This blue is also rather honest – but it’s the sort of factual honesty rather then a desire to be honourable. If asked a question, he’ll answer truthfully because that answer is the fact of the matter, not because he honestly feels what happened should be known. He’s pleasant enough otherwise, lacking that sarcasm obviously intelligent individuals sometimes reflexively carry, and is normally bright eyed and energetic. He’s rather neutral and private in that sense – preferring the company of His to anyone else – and does his best to complete D’ru. Nothing is more important to Sinth then the health and happiness of His. To that end, he’s like D’ru in that he’s hard to ruffle outside of knowledge-sharing situations, he’ll pester the rider to sleep or eat if he feels the other is lacking either, and he finds His’ pursuit of Ancientcraft bizarre but nonetheless most intriguing. Here are complex designs and concepts that truly takes the pair time to understand.

When it comes to Flights, he’s quirky in that he likes the sassy, ‘bad girls’. The more prone to verbal fencing they are, the more interested he’s in them. Of course, that’s on the ground. In the air, during a Flight however, Sinth tends chase only those that he feels his rider is interested in. Most of the time he’s right, but there’s occasional time when personal preference takes precedence and he’ll chase a ‘bad girl’. Variety if the spice of life, after all!
