Just because some Pads failed to return properly hardly meant anything at all. They just didn't know how to look. He knew. Anwar knew what he was looking for, and with his little brother along it wouldn't be long before he Dreamed of her again, and could lead Anwar to his fallen star...

...of course, he should like to have a bit more experience with females before he got there. The strange dark girl he'd met had worked out in the end, but only with a great deal of awkward fumbling...and he was fairly certain he'd only gotten away with his experiment because she pitied him. He had gotten kicked around a bit by that odd pride lion...she'd really come out of nowhere, how Rhaen lived near such a dangerous place...

Well, he supposed he was lucky she'd gone along when she had, there was no way he would've left his little brother near a place like that! He could've been hurt! ...which only mattered because Anwar didn't want him damaged, of course. Obadias was key to his plans. That didn't mean Anwar wasn't willing to slip off alone into the twilight for parts of his plots he didn't wish his sibling to be privy too, he just wasn't going to leave his brother by himself near a pride like that.

His limp all but gone now, Anwar made his way through the slowly darkening territory, his steps light and stealthy from a lifetime of habit. He wanted to see if his luck would be better tonight...he had a better idea now and he wanted to try again...just to test it...

Experience and age had taught Rana, who was no longer very young and also not very old, many things about life. She knew how to hunt, and how to fish. She knew which areas of the rogue lands were safest to sleep. She had met many faces, been told many stories, and lived several of her own.

In the first chapter were her mother and father, from whom she had learned this particular lifestyle. Like them, she had stayed a rogue, even though her sweet disposition was suited better to the life of a pride. Like them, she had not settled anywhere because she was incapable of choosing a permanent home.

In the second chapter there was Kyp, a handsome leopard whom she had loved very much. In her youth and ignorance, Rana had lost that first litter of babies to stress. And then, sick with grief and loss, she had nearly paid for that mistake with her own life.

This was when Nazih, and Rashidi had come into her life. Together, the cub and the lion had helped her to realize her self worth. Nazih was a man now, with a family of his own, and Rana was very proud of him. As for Rashidi— Rana didn’t know where he had gotten to, but she hoped that he was well.

And then, the latest turn of the page, had turned Rana into a mother. They were all beautiful, good children; almost adults, and she was preparing to let go of them, as she had been forced to let go of everything in her life. She was understandably very sad, but also resigned in her sadness.

It was the way of life. Rana understood this.

She was resting in a patch of tall grass when the sun started its farewell. Suddenly, Rana stood up a little straighter; narrowed her eyes, and raked them across the lands. There was an unfamiliar, male scent on the air.

"Whose there?" she called. Her voice was not threatening.

Dark green ears swiviled at the sound of a voice, instinct bringing the young male still and low at the sound. A lifetime of sneaking and skulking about had trained the cub to hide first, sort things out later. And motion only served to attract attention. Freezing, even if he was only mostly hidden by the tall grass, was a more effective means of vanishing than flattening himself on his belly. Moving drew the eye after all.

He needn't have worried though. The voice was female, not frightened but clearly she was wary to have noticed him, though the wind was not in his favor. Wise of her, in lands like these. At least he was well away from that pride, though he'd a hard time of it explaining how he'd gotten so knocked around to his brother. Making Obadias think any less of him...he detested the very idea.

"Just me," Anwar called back brightly, still not moving, letting the dark stripy pattern of his coat help him to stay invisible in the fading sun. His eyes drifted over the landscape, trying to pinpoint the voice. If he'd a scent this would be easier but, as it was... ah, there. A pale marking, a fluff of fur and the outline of an eye... but if that was enough to give her away, his pale yellow mane would reveal his presence to her.

Better to let her find him openly then, rather than give her any leave to suspect. Allowing the limp to become slightly more pronounced, which could only be advantageous to him regardless of whether she was hostile or friendly, he approached her, carefully pausing when he was still several lengths away, his head tipped quizzically, a smile warming his dark features.

"Oh, there you are! Good evening, miss," he greeted cheerfully, "My name is Anwar. If I may, whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?" Playful, friendly, open, and with some silver-touched words. It had worked well enough with the dark stranger, and he'd polished his act ever so carefully from that experience. Now was the time to see if it would work better, or if he needed more practice still. He refused to make a mistake and lose his precious star...

When the male did not respond immediately, Rana stood up a little bit straighter. Life as a rogue had taught her to be cautious, and she was wary now as she waited for him to respond to her call. A warm breeze ruffled the fur on her back. Her ears were pressed back against her head, and her eyes were narrowed still; searching for him amongst the grass.

Rana exhaled with relief when he answered her and her head swivelled in the direction of his voice. That adolescent mane was, indeed, visible to her, but she could not tell his age just yet. She shifted comfortably where she rested, tested the ground with her claws, and waited for him to approach her.

“Good evening, young sir,” she returned his greeting with a cordial nod, and a pleasant smile played across her pretty face. “I am called Rana.”

This male, she could tell, was not much older than her own children. She warmed to him immediately, green eyes lingering over the way that he limped, and made a soft sound in the back of her throat.

“Are you hurt?”

It pained her to be reminded of what her own babies, freshly out on their own, might be subjected to without her protection or guidance.

He caught the noise, had been waiting for it, intent on using it to help him determine where to go from here. It was her impulsive, instinctive reaction that told him what he needed to know. Pity or sympathy were very differnet from disgust or agression. Time to play his part...

"It's lovely to meet you, Rana," he smiled warmly, pausing in the middle of another limping step towards her. "Hurt? Oh, no, I...I'll be fine. Just a bit battered is all." He glanced away, lowering his ears awkwardly as though he wasn't sure how to play it down and didn't want her to know he was more uncomfortable than he claimed. Of course, his actions were carefully calculated to convince her that he was...it was an entertaining game to be played.

"I wound up too close to someone's territory, but, really, I'll be fine. And it was some distance from here, so you've naught to worry about," Anwar added, his voice tinged with concerned assurance, as though her well-being was far more important than his limping about. "Unless you're traveling?" he asked with a good bit of worry. "Because, if you are, I should mark out somehow so you don't get too close, I'd hate to think you got hurt..."

A bit battered. This young man said that he was ‘just a bit battered.’ Rana thought that it was best not to be battered at all, and she frowned tellingly at the way he brushed off his injuries.

“You should be more careful,” she scolded him softly, and took a careful step forwards, so as to get a better look at him. Her movements were slow and gentle, because she did not want to startle him, and another soft sigh slipped passed her lips.

“It is very kind of you to be so concerned for me,” the smile on Rana’s lips was twisted with wry amusement. She was the adult, but he was the one taking charge; reassuring her with a seemingly compassionate sort of confidence that he was the one that would do the protecting. It felt nice.

How strange.

He seemed a great deal older than his appearance suggested.

“I have lived in the rogue lands all my life,” she informed him, and thought about moving closer, in order to get a better look at his wound, but knew better than that. He was a stranger, no matter how kind he seemed, and she was tentative about trusting him. Though, his youth made it easier.

“Travelling is all that I’ve ever known.”

She was suited to life in a pride, but accustomed to the rogue lands.

Anwar didn't move much as she approached him, just ducked his head almost sheepishly when she told him to be more careful, though it was followed by a friendly lift in his ears when she thanked him for being concerned.

"Aw, well...you seem awfully nice, it would be a shame if anything happened to you. Some people just jump to conclusions. And I'll be more careful, I've not been beyond my pride's borders before, to be honest, so it's taken some getting used to," the young lion admitted with a shrug. "But I'm a quick study," Anwar added with a playful grin. "So I'll be fine, you've no cause to worry over me."

And...now where did he go from here? He wanted to manipulate the conversation in a specific direction, but wasn't sure how to go about it. It was a difficult thing to do as he didn't know Rana well at all. Oh, sure, he had a few snippits of her underlying personality that she'd let slip while she was talking to him. Her reaction to his limp, her body language as she approached and spoke with him...it was something alright, but not enough for him to feel comfortable working with. This was the same problem he'd had with Rhaen. Getting to a point...and then floundering.

"Always traveling though? Doesn't it get lonesome?" he asked, deciding to feel around a bit more before attempting to make any kind of adjustment to the direction of conversation.

Rana was awfully nice— sometimes, too nice. His compliments made her smile, and she inclined her head with interest at the mention of his home lands. She had met many rogues, but it was the people who came from prides that she was most fascinated by. A dozen questions exploded in her head, and they battled with each other for the right to be asked. But she could not decide, so she did not say anything about that right away. She simply watched him, and the expression on her face was absolutely curious.

“It does get lonesome,” she told him honestly, and grieved for the children that had grown up and gone away, “Sometimes, there is good company. My children also make me very happy. They are about your age, I think. They’ve all started their own lives.”

It would please her immensely, to have another family to look after, but she did not tell him that.

“Where are you from? What is it like?”

Children? She already had children? Self-control kept him from looking around to see if he could spot any little cubs. He was glad he hadn't though, when she continued. If they were his age, he'd have spotted them if they were around. Which meant they weren't, which further promised that this lioness was lonesome. If he'd been looking for a girl to sweep back to his pride, she'd have made a prime candidate with just the bits of information he now had on her. But she wasn't the one. She wasn't his fallen star.

But that didn't mean he couldn't use her all the same.

"Oh, my pride is like...a giant family," Anwar beamed, "I've lots of brothers and sisters, and I'm one of the eldest so sometimes I look after the littler ones." Mostly just Obadias, who was only a small bit littler than he was. But, details, who needed them? He certainly didn't have to share. "True there are some sour grapes in the lot, but overall it's a very pleasant place to be. Not many are solely looking out for themselves, we look after each other too." Or spy on one another. But it wasn't a lie! Nywele was the one who saved the Sultan's son from drowning, though he didn't even know which cub it had been at the time. All the Pads patrolled the borders to keep the lands safe, and all of his mothers had raised him though he knew Ukoo was the only one who shared his blood.

A giant family. It was the best definition. "Sometimes it seems like there's too many people though," Anwar continued, his voice brightening as though merely talking about it made his spirits soar. That was a general reaction to speaking of home and happiness, it would look odd if he didn't perk up. "I mean, it is like having dozens of little brothers and sisters sometimes, and one mother is enough, but five keeping an eye on you..." he shrugged his shoulders briefly. "Quiet is nice sometimes, but I do miss them though."

Such a life! Rana listened attentively to his talk of family and home, and her heart thrust so powerfully against her ribcage that she thought he must be able to hear it. It sounded a bit like a dream, because he painted it that way, and she aspired suddenly to follow him there.

But she was too shy to make such a request, and hesitant about leaving without telling her children where she had gone. Rana wanted to be somewhere they could reach her, if they ever needed her assistance, and so she would probably remain in the rogue lands— surrounded forever by the familiarity of the grass, and her favourite boulder. It was a hard life, but she had learned to be strong.

“You are very lucky to have grown up with so many people around you,” Rana sounded a little bit breathless, green eyes shining with the details (or lack thereof) of the things that he had told her. “It seems to have done you well. You look very strong, and healthy enough.”

Except for that limp. The poor thing.

“I would miss it to, if I were you.”

Anwar ducked his head when she complimented his pride through him. Strong? Well, he was glad to appear so, though he himself knew better. Fighting was not his strong point. It had only taken one lioness to prove this to him beyond all doubt. Tactics, on the other hand... Now there was something he had skill in.

"I do miss it," he agreed, knowing he repeated himself and choosing to do so regardless. "But I can't go back just yet." He wasn't sure if he planned to elaborate on that or not. Give him a bit of time to decide how to phrase it. But, oh, if only this one were the star he'd seen fall so long ago! How easy it would be to bring her along with him now! She was...so very vulnerable, now that he knew her weakpoints...this wouldn't be as hard as he thought.

"So...have you...eaten yet today?" Anwar asked almost shyly, "Because, I mean, it is easier to hunt with two. If you'd like to that is." And there were other things that took two as well. It wouldn't be too difficult to lead her further and further in the directions he wanted, family seemed to be tremendously important to her.

No, this wouldn't be too hard at all.

He couldn’t go back? Rana wondered why, but was not rude enough to press the issue without feeling guilty. If Anwar wanted to tell her, he would tell her. Hers was an inquisitive, curious expression and she bit her lip to keep quiet. It was possible that he had left for personal reasons. She had met many pride lions turned rogue who did. Whatever it was that kept him from his home, was none of her business. Unless he decided to make it her business.

“I have eaten,” Rana was always honest, but her voice was kindly. This was by no means a dismissal. “I am hungry now, though, and would love to hunt with you.”

Plus, she wasn’t about to make him hunt on his own with that injury. He would have difficulties catching anything with a limp like that.

Company was lovely. This male, although young, was good company. She did not have an inkling as to things that he planned for her, but would be willing and eager enough when the time came.

Anwar let his ears flick back briefly when she said she'd already eaten, allowing a mild dismay to brush across his features though he let it go quickly enough. A new tactic then? What else should he attempt... He was saved from formulating a new plan of approach when she assured him that she could eat again. Hunting was more productive than sitting and talking. It was hunting that had helped him lure Rhaen in. And Rana was already all but wrapped around his paw, following his words of family the way a dying lion follows the scent of water in a desert.

"Great! I think I saw some new tracks over in this direction, I'm sure between us it won't be hard at all." His role was an eager young adult now, hoping to show off to someone he cared to impress, or perhaps merely wished to get along with well. Turning, with frequent glances over his shoulder, he led the way to the trail he'd picked up, his mind already through with the hunting scenarios and plotting how to catch a different creature entirely.

He did not forget to limp.
