Barely into his adulthood but already a strapping figure for an average-sized wolf, Peregrine had taken leave of his family's den to venture out into the world at large. The solitude was a bit grating for a wolf who had always had someone near-by, but he was learning to deal with it since he had always been one to know when to lean on others and when to make it by himself. Overall, he would be ready to return home soon, but he'd only been out several weeks and that just didn't seem long enough. His sisters were old enough that they didn't need his protection all the time, so he decided he would give it another few weeks. He had barely run into another wolf, and wasn't expecting to now. If he was, he would smell them unless they were downwind.
The thought immediately made him turn sharp green eyes downwind, searching for movement. Nothing was there, so he continued on, relaxing again. He was so far out of Agua Azul, or any pack land for that matter, that the only wolves out here were messengers between packs or the occasional lone, none of whom talked for very long.
His feet drifted towards the sound of water, and the small stream he came across gave him a moment to pause and take a drink. His ears lazily searched for sound, but he was unconcerned enough that he kept his guard mostly lowered.

A full-body tackle seemed perfect on her menu of what to do with this stranger. Shannah grinned mischeviously and crept up on the new male, feeling a bit starved for contact after the recent breakup of her home pack. The very-young adult female sprang towards Peregrine's side, laughing, checking herself just a tiny little bit at the last moment to avoid seriously injuring him. I want to play, not kill him, she told herself in that moment.

The sudden movement startled the young male, and he immediately whirled to face the attack, his feet stumbling back a few steps as he bared his teeth. He regarded the new female with confusion as he realized she was making no move to actually hurt him after her sudden, initial dash, and she was actually laughing. He stopped baring his teeth, but still considered her as if he wasn't sure what to make of her. He couldn't decide if the laughter helped ease or confirmed the idea that she could be a crazy lone.
"I'm sorry. Can I help you?" A smile came to his face. Maybe he could ease the tension of the situation a bit, if she was insane. He perked his ears up also, studying her. She looked like she was around his age. It was hard to tell much more about a wolf than that. "Did I stumble into a game?"

Shannah grinned at him, crouching in a play bow. "Heh-heh. You're it." She tried to dash off but miscalculated where she was and ended up tripping over - into? - the stream, coming up all wet and laughing hysterically at her own idiocy. She stood carefully up and after after a good shake, she soon had ahold of herself. "Hey. Sorry to scare you like that," she said, her mood finally allowing a memory of his expression to break through.

Peregrine just continued to stare at her. She was a crazy lone. He'd finally found one. It hit him several minutes later that he was being rude and he quickly met her eyes and smiled slightly, determined to be polite to the first wolf he had seen in a while, even if she wasn't exactly what he had been hoping for. At least she wasn't aggressive.
"I was startled, rather than scared, so there's no harm done." He studied her sodden form while he spoke, his attention allowing him to deem her 'not dangerous.' Staying a little bit longer wouldn't hurt. "I'm Peregrine."

"Nice to meet you. I'm Shannah." Another quick shake and she succeeded in removing most of the water - but also getting it all over everything else. She didn't really notice. "I like your name. Always thought those birds were awesome." She toyed with the idea of leaving- after all, she might be in his territory? -but she just really didn't want to. "So..? Whatcha doin' out here?" she asked, by way of conversation.

Peri flinched slightly as water pelted him, but couldn't help an amused kind of smile at the odd wolf. "Thank you."
Her appearance certainly gave lie to her personality, that was for sure. Judging from her bold face markings, he would have supposed such a wolf to be serious, a warrior of solemnity. He really needed to learn not to judge wolves by their appearance.
"I'm just traveling a bit before heading home," he confessed. He bent his head to take another drink, but kept an eye on her in his peripheral vision. No sense in taking risks. "But we're pretty far out for a pack, as far as I know. What are you doing out here? Aren't you concerned for your safety?" Males had to worry about fights, but females had a great deal more to consider when they were out alone.

"Eh, I haven't much choice in the matter," she said, verbally shrugging it off. "It just so happens that I'm in need of a new home. Not much luck yet, but I'm not worried. It'll come soon enough." She was young yet, and still a bit naive to the ways of roving males, so safety didn't really cross her mind aside from where she was going to get her next meal. (sorry, I gotta go, but unless you think this is long enough to go on I'll fill it in more later).

"Oh." Peri's first thought was of Reign of Terror, but he pushed it aside. Whether it had been them or something else that had torn her home from her, there was little he could do as a single wolf. If he had his own pack, he would have offered her a place, but with Agua so uncertain these days, he didn't even bother to offer her a chance to visit his home. Besides, for all he knew she was lying, although her earlier appearance made that seem unlikely.
"I wish you the best of luck with that." He looked her over again. Her appearance gave lie to her personality; she looked more fierce and serious than she actually was. "If you didn't have a specific way you were going, maybe you'd head off with me? It's safer to travel in pairs." The push behind that was less an interest in company-- though he wouldn't turn that aside either-- and more a concern for a lone female's well-being. Peri's personality simply couldn't square away the idea of leaving a female alone if he could help protect her even for so much as a day. It was unlikely she'd run into anyone dangerous around here, but it was still an option he didn't like thinking about.

"Aw, you'd do that?" Shannah's face lit up and she scratched the ground once in a gesture of excitement. "Then I won't be alone any more." She obviously liked the idea...and for some unknown reason, she was beginning to very much like this male. "Where are we going? Anywhere particular?" She didn't know if he had a home, either.

"Like I said, I'm eventually heading back to my family, but right now I'm just walking in the general direction. It doesn't matter when I get there."
And later might be better.
Peregrine turned away from the stream and headed back into the forest, looking back once or twice to make sure she was going to follow him. "I've been away from home for a while, on purpose, so a few extra days won't be a problem."

"A few extra days?" She was puzzled. "I'm not sure what you mean by that." She caught up with her new friend without much effort, bouncing a little bit and trying to resist the urge to tackle him again.

(It's really hard to respond to posts that short. Haha, can you try to make them a little longer?)
"I mean that I don't mind staying away from home for a few days more since I've already been out for so long." He smiled at her as he continued forward, his back straight but his steps slow and leisurely. "An extra night or two not spent getting home as quickly as possible isn't going to bother me. I'm sorry. I was trying to assure you it was fine, not confuse you."
Peregrine cared for his family, but he wasn't very close to them. It would be nice to see them again, but it wasn't a driving urge. The only thing he really missed was the sense of belonging to a group. Lone life just wasn't suitable for him, but journeys he could enjoy. This might be the last long journey for a while, though. He'd had his fill of being out in the world.

"Does that mean I'm not coming home with you, though?" Shannah pressed, still a bit confused. "Being homeless is no fun at all." She couldn't know about the state of his pack, and in the back of her mind she knew that, but anything had to be better than this, right? She was absolutely sick of being alone. She wished someone had paired up with her when the pack disbanded, but....nobody had. Not knowing why made it worse. If that was the answer this male had, well then, she would at least try to find out her missing 'why'.

Peregrine looked at her uncomfortably for a moment, then shook his head. "It would be better if you didn't. For one, we just met. Not that you don't seem nice, but I can't know if you're acting or not." He didn't think she was, but it was a valid concern. "And Agua Azul is also a bit... unstable right now. I don't know what I'll find out when I go back, and I'd rather not drag you into it as well."
There was so much more to it than that, but that was all he could really say. The pack... it was leaning towards being a mess when he left. If he walked back in and found them on the brink of civil war-- what with what he had heard about Piper and Wazaam's issues-- he wouldn't be surprised. He wasn't about to allow some stranger to walk into that kind of trap. There was also Reign of Terror... No. That was something that was best left out unless it became necessary.
"It's probably better if you looked for a different pack." He fell silent, looking thoughtful. Well, if she was looking for a pack to go to, he could probably make some suggestions, couldn't he? Akiiki was still safe, for the moment. Not that Agua was on friendly terms with them. What other packs were still mostly free of the Reign's influence? YMCA Pack was always willing to take in lones, especially those who were lacking in luck. Shannah's situation sounded to him like it was right up their alley. Either would be a good fit.
