The lioness lay stretched out on a flat rock, the sunlight delightfully warm against her pale fur. Utterly relaxed, Keena's gaze was across the long and swaying grasses that surrounded her, watching the clouds drift across the sky through the sparce spindly trees of the svannah. Occasionally her eyes would drop to the crevice of the rock, where three teeny tiny bundles of fluff were curled up on and under each other.
Her kittens.
They were worn out from playing, games she herself had gingerly joined in. So small, she was always wary of possibly hurting one of the little hares but there was no way she could ever say no to those sweet little faces when they asked if 'mommy' would play too.
The lioness purred softly watching them. With Star almost grown, it was nice to have more little ones about. And they were hers, whether anyone believed it or not. They might need more attentive watching than your average cub, being about snack-sized to most, but she loved them dearly all the same.
That didn't mean she didn't occasionally let her first daughter watch them while she went off on a small ramble, but Star was with Dysi today, and Keena was content in the warmth of the sun.

He mostly wasn't aware of it, and by the time he realized he was scowling at someone nearby they had already gone off. Just a bit slow on the uptake most of the time, he never seemed to be able to say hi to anyway.
By now he was fairly used to being alone. But being used to it did not mean he didn't feel the weight of loneliness.
He saw something laying on a rock nearby, with movement around it. Okay. New plan. Maybe if he approached someone they wouldn't run off before he could say hi. Determined, but now feeling very shy and nervous, he walked closer to see it was a female lion, with... rabbits?
Scowling out of anxiety, he cleared his throat, standing tall as he looked at her, claws digging into the earth. He opened his mouth, revealing long fangs, and said, without a smile, "my name is Imekoza."
Inside, he was kicking himself for not saying hello first, though that wasn't the only mistake he was making. It was just the only one he was aware of.

Keena glanced over at the flicker of motion in the corner of her eye. A lion? Her head cocked slightly to one side as she watched the pink maned male move towards her. Was something wrong? He certainly didn't seem happy. Her tail flicked briefly against the rock as he approached, she was sure he'd seen her kittens by now, was that why he was upset? She knew one or two people that didn't understand why she would befriend food, though she didn't understand why her personal views could actually be offensive to them. It was just her opinions after all.
"I'm Keena," she replied, her expression still friendly though she hated to admit he was making her a bit nervous. She'd never worried about people's reactions before she'd had kittens...or, er, adopted them. They were so fragile and tiny! "And the sleepy little things are Jari, Cari, and Chai," the lioness added, naming them to make sure he knew that they were accounted for. Now that he knew they weren't food, no mistakes would be made that would harm her little babies.
Right?

Imekoza watched her, his expression the same as from the start, though he was trying so hard to look calm and even friendly. It just wasn't working. Maybe he didn't really know what that was supposed to look like, let alone how to replicate it.
He had to take more notes. See how other people made happy faces, and just practice practice practice.
"Keena," he repeated, looking at her, then at the little bunnies. They were very cute. He looked like he was scowling thoughtfully at them, though he had no intention of harming them or anything of the sort. His stomach grumbled inappropriately and his ears instantly fell back, as if he anticipated her yelling at him for it.
"Those are cute names..." he said quietly. He dared to pad a bit closer, lowering his face so he could look at the hares. He had never seen baby ones before. They were much smaller than he thought. "How do you keep from losing them."

She had some slightly mixed feelings about this. He hadn’t done anything wrong, but she couldn’t help but be a little bit nervous about him being so close to her kittens. It wasn’t his fault. It was because of the red lion. She’d never worried so much before the red lion attacked her family. Her own ears lowered slightly back, betraying her nerves, when he leaned towards the little ones.
"I have to keep a close eye on them," Keena told him when he asked how she kept from losing them. "Jari, the eldest, he gives me trouble sometimes. But they're my babies, and I love them all dearly, so it's worth the effort to look after them." Maybe that came out a little more pointedly than she'd intended. But she didn't mean anything to upset him. She was just... nervous. Her tail flicked lightly, and her golden eyes never left Imekoza's face.
He seemed nice enough...kind of. But then, so had that lion she'd met that one night, the one who'd tried to coax her into cannibalism. Mal...something. The lioness shuddered. It was scary, having a family to protect and no idea how to protect them...

Imekoza noticed her ears going back and his own echoed hers. He paused, his expression still not changing, though his eyes looked soft, nervous. Very nervous. He lowered himself to the ground, submissive, his tail still behind him as he now settled to watch the kittens from a distance, not wanting to upset her or them by getting too close.
At least he could be cute.
"They sound like... a lot of work..." he said, tilting his head on his paws. He might have smiled, just watching them, thinking them cuter by the second. It seemed her ease with them lulled him, and he was picking up on her feelings of love to them. He wondered what that was like, having something to love like that.
He glanced up at her, big pink mane fluffed around his face, chin on his paws.
