This comic and the ensuing debate brought up what I think is an interesting question. Much has been made of Barbie and her misleading figure over the years, but what about similar "role models" for boys? I submit for your consideration this question: "Barbie or Superman, which is a more unrealistic role model for children?" My personal argument is that Superman is worse, but I'd love to hear more opinions on the matter. If you're interested, here is my reasoning (quoted from my comment on the comic): The thing about Superman that's always bugged me is they make him out to be a perfect person because he's big and strong and handsome and tall, while the brilliant but unattractive Lex Luthor is evil. In fact, most of Superman's enemies seem to be genius inventors or scientists. They started a pattern of associating looks and athleticism with being "good" and intelligence and creativity with being "bad" that still persists today in a great portion of male culture. Barbie sets unrealistic standards for what girls "should" be, but she doesn't actively tell you that being smart or creative or different makes you an evil person. Superman does, though, by demonstrating not only what boys "should" be but also what they "shouldn't" be.

More destructive is the extensive use of photoshop for improving the look of celebrities in the photos.
And the old-times praising of unhealthy skinny looks in fashion models.
That is what washes the brain of kid-girls.

I think if your kid/you look up to such false role models to begin with you need to be disciplined better. Kids should be taught what is right and what is wrong, they way things should be and the way they shouldn't, what is false and what is true. There is nothing wrong with Superman or Barbie, they are there for pretend, so kids can live a short fantasy in which they are living a dream everyone dreams, to be perfect. Thats all it should be thought of is a fantasy, if you/your child believes its real/is the way things are supposed to be, then you really need to have a talk with them. Thats what parents are for, to parent, to teach. Don't go blaming story book characters for lack of parenting, sure there are kids that will believe those things even if you teach them its not true, but thats just because there are just some people who are stupid, theres no changing that, they would have failed anyways and found some other false character to fall for if not Superman or Barbie.

Hmm, in retrospect, I'm glad I added the 3rd option.

LOL
Generally speaking, at least as for Barbie, if you look at what kind of clothes she was sold in - I would say this rather teaches girls that women can be successful professionally too.
As for Superman... He's just another Hulk Hogan.

That I will. You'll see, too. One day the muscular, handsome, 70 year old me will be on the news, and you'll go "Woah! I knew that guy!" xp
