Ask was writing in his journal when he heard the door bell ring. He closed the book and placed it in the back of a drawer then jogged down the stairs to see who it was. Shiny was in the back yard tending the garden gnomes. Apparently they had to be dusted at least once a week.
He pulled open the door to see Aunt Sun and a new little girl standing there. "Hi Aunt Sun." He stepped back from the door to let them in. "Mom's out back tending the garden."

"This will just take a minute." is what Sun had said to Nadia as they were pulling into Shiny's driveway. As far as she knew as she was standing there at the door holding her Mother's hand, it was a true fact. Apparently Aunt Shiny had left something in their house last time she stopped by and it was on the way home from running some errands to drop it off. Nadia had never met Aunt Shiny or her "cousin" Ask for that matter, but she had heard all about them from her siblings and mother. They sounded....acceptable but the jury was still out on that one.
Nadia peered curiously at Ask as he opened the door, giving him a careful smile. "Hi there Ask! Sun gave him a broad smile and nodded as Ask told her where Shiny was. "By the way, this is Nadia. She's new to the family. Nadia, this is Ask who I've told you about." Nadia nodded to her mom with a "happy" smile before giving one to Ask. "Well Ask I'm going to go give this to your Mom, you don't mind entertaining Nadia for a minute do you?" She gave a little pet to Nadia's hair as she spoke to Ask.

"No, I don't mind. Mom's just through that door." He told Sun. Turning to Nadia he studied her a moment then offered a smile. "Do you want something to drink? They'll be a lot longer then a minute." He sounded like he knew it for a fact.

"Thanks Ask, I promise I won't be too long." And with that Sun was on her way down the hall to see Shiny. Nadia studied Ask back as he studied her. He was still acceptable, so far anyway. "I'd like juice please." When she finally spoke it was polite, well mannered, and well spoken for someone so young. She was pleased with herself that it had come out so well. She gave a little smile and then continued tilting her head slightly. "How do you know they're going to be longer then that? Mom didn't seem like she was lying."

"Come on into the kitchen so I can get your juice." He said leading the way. "And I know they'll be longer then a minute because I know Mom, and I know Aunt Sun. They may mean for it to be a minute, but they'll be chattering about the gnomes and then other stuff for a while." He poured her a glass of juice and handed it to her. "So what do you like to do?"

Nadia followed as he spoke and then took the juice from him as it was handed to her. "Thank you." She said as she took it with a smile before giving it a sip. "Well, I like music and dancing. Also I like things that smell nice. What about you?" She sipped her drink again and then looked at him sideways raising her eyebrow slightly the way she had seen some adults do when they thought something sounded odd. "And what is a gnome?"

"I like hiking and doing stuff outdoors but music is good but I don't know how to dance." He got a glass of water for himself. "A gnome... well the mythical gnomes watch over gardens and make shoes? I don't remember. But the gnomes Mom's dealing with are little statues of old men with pointy hats that 'watch over the garden'. I don't know if they do or not."

Ask was continuing to sound normal and acceptable to Nadia. He liked to do normal boy things, not like her stupid brother Kei. "I'm not a big fan of the outdoors. It's too dirty." She made a little face. "But I don't mind Edmund's garden. I like how it smells out there, and the flowers are nice to look at too." she added as an afterthought.
Nadia continued to look puzzled over the gnome thing. "Gnomes sound....interesting..." she thought they sounded stupid, stupid and weird. " I don't think we have any around the garden that I've noticed."

"They probably don't exist. But those are the myths about them. I like Edmund's garden too. Mostly." He led her back into the living room to sit down and wait for Sun and Shiny to be finished yacking each other's ears off. "It's a shame you don't like the outdoors much."

Well, mythical or not, they still sounded weird and stupid to Nadia. Like all that fairytale stuff that Willow liked Sun to read to her. Nadia figured it wasn't true, so what was the point in hearing about it. She puzzled slightly about the only liking Edmund's garden mostly. "What don't you like about Edmund's garden?" She gave a little laugh about it being a shame she didn't like the outdoors much. "Why is it a shame? I'm not really missing anything..."

"I don't like his crop plants. They rub me the wrong way for some reason." Ask answered then took a sip of his water, "And the great outdoors is really neat. There's all sorts of fun things to do out there and to find, like deer and crows and different kinds of trees and rocks. Though I could do without snakes." He wrinkled his nose in disgust.

Ok, so maybe Ask wasn't totally normal. Not if "crop plants rubbed him the wrong way". That had to be one of the stranger things she'd heard. She gave a little frown as she thought about that before looking back to Ask to listen to him talk about the things he thought was neat about the outdoors. She supposed those kind of things were alright, if you were a boy anyway. It sounded like something Willow might like too, but Willow was of course on her list of people she thought were weird.
"You don't like snakes?" She gave another little head tilt. "I think they look cool. I want to go see one at the zoo. Me and Gavin and Willow and Kei were watching an animal video and there were some. They move like smoke." Nadia liked watching smoke from Sun's new incense burner. She found it fascinating, especially since Sun had told her that an incense burner was the item she'd received as a child.

"No, I really don't like snakes. I like smoke better then I like snakes." Ask said. "I've been to the zoo, there were lots of really cool animals there. I liked the birds and the giant cats. Though the hyenas were pretty awesome too."

Nadia smiled a bit. Yes this is what normal kids talked about. Animals at the zoo and what they liked and didn't like. They didn't make weird noises.
"I liked the snakes, the elephants, and the tigers. Also I like smoke a lot. Did you know my object was an incense burner?" Nadia tilted her head at him. "What was yours?" She tried to guess what it was, but she wasn't really sure. Nothing quite gave it away.

Ask grumbled about snakes a moment more. "I was given a baseball bat." He told her with a somewhat sheepish smile. No one would guess he was given such a sports focused item. The sportiest thing he ever did was go hiking. And that was more of a hobby.
"An incense burner is very fitting for you, I think." And it's true, Nadia was almost mysterious. She seemed too knowledgeable, too together for someone so young, and that added to her race and coloring made him think of incense.
