Demeter's appearance had become increasingly groomed, no longer the shabby young adult who cared more for learning to hunt and playing games. Well...she still enjoyed those things but they were not the only thing in her life. She was taking care of herself, her fur silky from cleaning, not clumped or wild.
The brown and blue lioness sat in the spot she'd designated for one of her secret rendezvous; she was hoping to convince her secret friend to meet her mother..which in the past had forced her friend to turn cold and cut their visit short. She couldn't figure out why he felt so fiercely that they shouldn't meet. She saw him as completely perfect, handsome, assertive, playful, and yes just a tad socially awkward like she was. Why wouldn't he want to meet her mom?
She sat impatiently, resisting the urge to bob her head like she sometimes saw Uncle Kubwa do. This was going to be the day she finally got her answer.
The area was one that was out in the open and well traveled. She'd picked it on purpose, perhaps someone would see her with him and she'd have someone to talk to about it..the secret was starting to grate on her..and as much as she tried the subject never seeed to come up with Anya.

Without any cubs to distract them, Enzi and Kafara had become much better at keeping up with the goings-on in the family. It seemed possible the whole family would be much more capably nosy now that only Hamamu and Mkate were around to demand attention, and that was only two cubs for many, many older lions. Because of all this spare attention.. and his desire to enact revenge on his sister, Enzi had noticed changes in her behavior. Particularly that she was much neater, cleaner and secretive. Or she seemed more secretive, wandering off like she did. Enzi had tried to convince Kafara to go talk to her but it wasn't going to happen, and he didn't want to bring it up to anybody else so he had followed her himself. He wasn't very good at hiding, he was far too brightly colored for that.. but he still tried. He decided it was very lucky that she seemed so distracted, but it was hard to tell if that was really a good thing or not.
After a while of watching her sit alone and anxious looking, he decided to go on out and confront her. Casually. Hopefully. So he stood himself upright again, no longer trying to hide himself.. and he walked up, rounding his path a bit so he would enter her line of vision before he got too close to her. Last thing he needed was to scare her.

Demeter exhaled slowly letting the tension that was boiling up inside of her out as she did. He wasn't necessarily late, she'd asked that he come around midday and it was still that time. She inhaled and then exhaled again counting to ten.
1..2...3...Why in the world is Enzi here?!
She looked down at her paws hoping that he hadn't seen her and that she could melt into her surroundings, unfortunately it seemed that he was looking right at her and couldn't possibly have missed her.
"Hello Enzi," she called trying to keep any emotion out of her voice.

"Hey, Demeter," he greeted her, hoping he sounded casual- though he was sure he sounded just as suspicious as he was.. but he could have been over-analyzing. But he didn't have time to dwell on that.
"What are you doing out here all alone?" he asked, glancing around- hoping it was more curious than suspicious this time, too, "I suppose it's a nice day for a walk.."
Except she was sitting. He was walking, though.

She glared at him trying to tell if he was being serious, she told herself that she was in a common area where anyone was bound to walk by..she counted on someone seeing them, but her brother?
She looked passed him and tried to look inconspicuous as she looked for her friend.
"Nice day for a walk..I suppose," She reiterated what he had said, "I was just feeling like walking, maybe I'll run into a friend."

"Well, you've run into me now," he said brightly, grinning-- but it didn't last. He knew she wouldn't be expecting to run into him, she knew exactly where to find him more than half the time- and that was where to wait for him if he wasn't there the other half of the time.
"Unless you mean someone specific," he said thoughtfully, though not very good at hiding his intention of prying. He glanced around again, wondering.

A genuine smile spread across her face she didn't want Enzi to think she wasn't interested in speaking to him, she loved him but her nerves were shot from wondering and worrying. She couldn't help but glance around him.
"So I have," she murmured and then decided it was best to come clean, she was in need of talking to someone and she might as well tell someone who cared for her.
"I was sort of expecting a friend to show up..but I don't think he will. I was hoping he'd come home to meet Mom." She felt like a small piece of what was holding her back lift.
"We've been meeting a lot lately, I think Mom would like him."

Enzi stopped pretending not to be suspicious the moment he heard the word 'he'. There was no point pretending now, she was talking about it.. and one of his theories had proven correct. You didn't just HAVE a friend of the opposite sex.. usually. And if you were hoping to introduce him to your mother, it probably was a good sign it wasn't just a friend. His eyes were narrowed and he was giving Demeter an appraising look.. and then he reminded himself how annoyed he had been with everybody when they tried to poke and prod and hint at him about Kafara.. but Kafara was never a secret.
"You want him to meet mom?" he repeated, trying to put on a more casual face but still very suspicious seeming, "Who's your friend? Is this why you've been acting so strange?"

"I haven't been acting strange!" She said indignantly a haughty cough rising up in her throat. Perhaps she had been sneaking around a little more than usual, but she didn't think her behavior was strange.
"Mja is very nice," Demeter clammed up, what could she say? How could she explain her immense interest in him without sounding strange? "He's not from the Pride, I was going to ask him today if he'd join...if he'd stay."
So there it was it was out.

"Have so!"
He couldn't help himself and had to argue childishly back, but she was being so ridiculous! He perked up a bit when she actually said his name, and suggested that today was the day he would be staying with the pride.
"You've been cleaning yourself up and sneaking away to hang out with someone who hasn't wanted to meet mom and you have to ask him to stay?" he asked, looking now more confused and concerned than suspicious or angry.

She resisted the required 'have not' that she nearly uttered.
"I don't know..you make it sound so bad! He's independent, a traveler like Anju and Kiki. I would like him to stay, that would be ideal, but I wouldn't want to force him to...I just," she was getting angry, Enzi was unraveling her perfect..ill thought out plans.
"I haven't been cleaning up just for him, I thought it was time I didn't look like such a mess," she muttered.
"I swear that he really is kind, and not at all what I thought outside males were supposed to act like," she thought of her biological mother and grandmother's experiences with men. She felt like he was treating her like a teenager and he was the much older brother.
"Do you think this is wrong? To want someone to stay," look-ee-here Demeter does have a vulnerable side.

"No, of course not," Enzi said after a long pause, letting Demeter get out everything she wanted to say. He wasn't suspicious of her behavior anymore, just of this strange male. Surely Demeter was smarter than Lisi and Biski, at least she had seen this male more than once by the sounds of it.. still, he didn't like it.
"OK, well, where is he?" he said, looking around.

Demeter let out the breath she wasn't aware she'd been holding. "Where? he was supposed to meet me here earlier, I've been waiting for awhile." She wrinkled her face and thought for a moment that she might cry, tears welled in the corner of her eyes.
"I probably shouldn't have pushed the issue about staying, I've asked him to meet everyone before but he was wary, or wouldn't talk about it. Muh-maybe he knew that I was going to ask today."
She glanced around, anywhere but at Enzi looking for Mja. "He'll probably show." She didn't sound so certain.
"It's silly for me to be so worried," she added, she didn't want to seem desperate, but she had been thinking of the future whenever he came to mind.

As soon as Demeter looked about ready to start crying, Enzi was suddenly very anxious again. He'd be suspicious of anybody with his sisters, just as Kutunza had been suspicious of him.. but this was a strange who didn't want to meet family and seemed to be standing her up right now.. he could be especially suspicious of this. If she was so easily ready to cry, too, it was far more fishy than just anything else. It meant she had some doubts despite her insistence. If this stranger left any room for doubts, this wasn't going to end well. Enzi felt the overwhelming need to go and get their mother.
"If- if you say so," he said, not sure what to do now he had the answers and things didn't look so hopeful.

"I do say so," she glanced at him out of the corner of her eye, "maybe he's just nervous about me bringing up something important." Oh, she really did sound like a teenage drama queen, she was getting too old for this, her family has had enough long drawn out issues anyway.
"It will be okay, don't worry Enzi," Demeter sighed, "Maybe if you went on home he would show?" The lioness didn't think she was going to be able to shake her brother anytime soon.
