Eron Hold.
It was as good a place as any to start.
As they appeared from between, Xan was biting her lip. The brown rider vanished totally, and apparently the black too. They had to find him. How had she managed to get caught up in this? The situation spun in her head as fast as the white and orange spun in Opeth's eyes. "Talk to Iweth," Xan instructed her lifemate, "see how they're doing." It was possible to yell between dragons, but at speed it was exhausting and pretty impractical. If they landed they could speak in person, but for now it was easier like this.
"Right," Opeth grumbled; he didn't want to be here... but what choice was there? Benden threatened. They had to find out what was going on. "What do you see," he asked of his fellow dragon, "and what do you and yours think? I think we should look around from up here for a while, see if we can see activity of the humans, and of course for the black himself."

Opeth and his want to know what we think? I wish we had spoken to Brakiath. She would know all the Search Riders. Now we have to play catch up. This last part was sent so that everyone could hear the message. Iweith was still very upset but pleased that they would get to the bottom of what was going on. He wanted to get back at that Benden Brown. Angling so that they would be visible to Eron's Heights, Iweith bugled their approach.
V'tur was not pleased with the way things had gone with G'an. But at least a plan had been put together and they would follow through with it. With a double clutch on the Sands, it was true that there should be plenty of candidates so that the little ones could Impress. And a late minute Search was not out of the question. But Iweith had a point, why hadn't G'an or Moroth known who the rider was? He hated feeling suspicious. I agree. Tell them that we should land, ask if they have seen a Black Rider on Search around here. If he is not here, maybe he was and we can find out where he went to...

Well, at least it seemed they were on the right tracks; a black rider had been here, and she supposed they could only assume it was the one they were after... The only way to find out was to find the rider and dragon, and it would be best to do it quickly; the longer they spent here the more people were crowding about, she couldn't blame them for that - their sudden appearance, and their hunt for a fellow rider had to be great gossip material - but it was a total pain in the arse.
"I'm going to mooch around the outskirts," Xan had muttered to V'tur as the crowds pressed closer, "maybe there's some old buildings or something they could be hiding in..."
Hiding. Why had she assumed they were hiding? She hadn't even noticed she'd said that until she'd walked away.
"Because they have vanished from our Weyr after what happened with the brown rider," Opeth said, shooting a glare at a gaggle of curious children who gawped at him from a doorway. "Something is not right," the blue went on, "why would they just go?... Mine, could they have something to hide?"
s**t. Well that was something she didn't want to consider. It was the brown rider's fault, she was sure it had been the Benden man to start it, but it didn't look good on the Trine native to just up and vanish afterwords...
Hu.
She had been so caught up in this new, worrying line of thought that she almost missed the tracks leading down to the shore. "Looks like this is the only lead we're going to get," she said to Opeth, climbing back up onto his back and strapping herself in. "Who knows how old they are... What's further over there?"
"Cliffs and caves," Opeth shared his sharp vision with his rider briefly as he began to lope along the trail of footprints. "Good place to hide..."
"...Good reason to hide?"
"We shall have to see."
Biting her lip, Xan took a firm grip of the riding harness and squinted into the distance. She didn't like the feel of this at all. "Get hold of Iweth, Opeth, tell him what we've found."
"Iweth. We have found tracks leading to the shore. We do not know how old they are, but we are following them. How do you and your fare?"

V'tur had been acting as an authority figure speaking directly to the Lord Holder. The black, no one had caught his name what a surprise, had come and gone again. After some tense words, the brown rider left and began to inspect the Hold grounds. Everyone seemed to have seen the black rider but he was definitely no longer there. Frowning, V'tur was not very approachable right now. And to make matter worse, with two dragons in Eron and two clutches at Trine, everyone and their brother who was of Searchable age seemed to be "coming across" the brown rider and annoying Iweith who had taken to the Heights to escape them all.
"Dragon rider! Your companion left to head out of the Hold," a random person caught up to him and pointed away from Eron. He was about sixteen, seventeen turns. Another hoping to be helpful and Searched but Iweith was not that type of dragon.
Just then, Opeth bespoke to Iweith who bespoke to his rider. Curiouser and curiouser.
Opeth and his have found tracks near the cliffs. They wish to know how we fare. Iweith rumbled.
Tell them we are swamped with people hoping to be Searched or search a family member. Like flies on rotted meat. And everyone has seen this rider but no one knows where he has gone. V'tur scowled and turned away from the "helper". He headed towards the heights to get back on Iweith. Ask them if they want our assistance.

Ha. She remembered being like that when a dragon arrived at her Hold. She'd never actually expected to be chosen... But that was a different lifetime, and now was not the time to reminisce.
"You were not right," Opeth commented, "not whole, not Mine... Well, do we want them to come?"
"Hummm..." Xan frowned thoughtfully, and eventually shrugged. "Either way. If they might find somebody who knows something maybe they should stay, if not then they're welcome to join us to get away from the crowds; I can't imagine we'd actually need them..." It wasn't like the black and his rider were going to leap out and attack them for the egg's sake! She was letting her imagination run wild, and letting Opeth's tension to get to her. "Either way," she went on, "they're welcome, but we can handle it. Tracks might not even lead to anything."
"Mmm... Iweth. It is up to you and yours. We don't need you, so if you might find out something useful stay in the hold. If not, Mine says you may join us to escape the buzzing insects." Personally he was just fine with the brown staying away, annoying beast that he was, but in the end the fool was one of his wing, and he didn't want him to suffer nasty dirty hands trying to touch him unless it was really necessary.

V'tur by now was up at the heights, leaning against Iweith trying to gather his thoughts in place. If the Lord Holder didn't have information then what made him think that anyone else would? However, as the ranking rider, V'tur could still hold some sway with maybe any Traders or Harpers passing through. Or even a Runner. Those three groups always seemed to know half of Pern's business and what they didn't know, they could find out.
Xan and Opeth were also smaller than V'tur and Iweith. Which means that they might be more likely to spot any clues that the bigger pair couldn't see. Tell Opeth that we are staying. We shall try to find out if any of the traveling folk might know anything. If we can not find anything within the next two candles, we should move on to the next hold.
Iweith rumbled but relayed the message. He was not happy but at least he wasn't upset anymore.
Sighing, V'tur turned back to see if there were any Traders passing through.

As Xan and Opeth move to investigate the caves, the flicker of lights in one indicates a presence. Who, or what, it might be is unknown, but the cave is large enough for a green, or better yet, a black, to crouch in if they so chose. The rocky shoreline means there are no footprints but the light is indeed promising.
Just then, a man steps out of the cave, stretching and turning his face to the sun. His clothing and knots indicate he is a Blackrider.
During V'tur and Iweith's search, a young girl approaches them and smiles up at the Brownrider, bobbing back and forth. She's nervous but obviously hoping to catch his attention, "Mister... Mister? You looking for a dragon like yours? 'Cept he's all dark and black? My brother knows some of that, I think." She tilted her head to one side, smiling, "He's a Trader!"

Was that him? Xan squinted down at the figure - Opeth had taken to the air to travel more swiftly and easily - and tried to decide. "Land, Opeth."
For once the blue didn't snip or gripe; he just angled his wings down to bring himself into a gentle swoop. As he approached the ground, he backwinged in order to slow himself and touched down softly on the rocky ground.
"Hey!" Xan called to the rider who had just emerged and waved with one hand as she freed herself from the riding harness with the other. Once she had released the straps she hopped to the ground and moved towards the other rider. "What y' doing all the way out here?" she quizzed in friendly tones.

V'tur. A little one approaches. Iweith drew himself together so as not to startle the little girl who seemed to be dancing in place. She was a cute thing and Iweith would have loved to play with her except she had something important to say.
She's nervous but obviously hoping to catch his attention, "Mister... Mister? You looking for a dragon like yours? 'Cept he's all dark and black? My brother knows some of that, I think." She tilted her head to one side, smiling, "He's a Trader!"
V'tur kneeled down, ignoring the popping sound coming from his knee and gave the girl a smile. How lucky was this! Surely a Trader, whose word could be trusted, would have all the answers. It was as if Pern itself had helped out. Keeping his hands relaxed, he looked at her with great interest. "I am, little one. You can call me V'tur. And I would love to speak with your brother, if he is willing to meet with me. Perhaps, we can trade services?"
He waited breathlessly for her answer.
