The day was cool. The hot sun had not yet penetrated the leaves of the trees overhead that covered the forest and the swamp in darkness. The water and the ground were just cool enough to be comfortable. The sounds of animals running through the swamp could be heard echoing all through the area. None of this meant anything to a creature of solitude, of loneliness.
Deadly Nightshade was watching a few caterpillars eat leaves off one of the low branches on a tree. A cool breeze shifted through the air, causing the trees to whisper. The caterpillars did not fall, as she had worried they would. Other than the sounds of their tiny munching, and Nightshade's breathing, there was nothing in the close vicinity. How could silence be so deafening as it was now? Would a sudden noise be even louder, given the silence? She would not know until it happened.
Glancing around, she thought she heard something coming near, but seeing nothing, dubbed it to be her imagination and went back to watching the caterpillars. Being so alone, little things like this were what entertained you and kept you occupied. This was the only life Nightshade knew. Sometimes she wondered if it would change.

How boring, the empty day. Heavy Sleep stretched and stomped to shake himself awake. He had nothing to do. He had wanted to make his perfumed water, but it wasn't hot enough to steep the blossoms properly in his rocky puddles. His coat still smelled sweetly; it had only been a short while since his last dousing, but for Sleep, no amount of bathing would ever be enough.
Instead, he wandered around idly, searching for even sweeter blossoms than the ones he used normally. His favourite was a small yellow flower with a white eye. When he used those, his coat gave off a scent reminiscent of his namesake. It wasn't strong on every kimeti, and even on those with a wonderful sense of smell it only made them, perhaps, feel a little dreamy or drowsy.
He wandered, for what felt like a very long time, trying to side-step the worst of the mud. The swamp really wasn't a good place for something which liked to stay clean. Heavy Sleep turned around a tree, and saw a Doe. Her coat was largely dark, as his was, but unlike her, his glowing band seemed to cast starlight around him. It made him painfully visible, weaving through the trees, walking towards the stranger doe.
"Well hello; up to no good, by any chance?" Heavy Sleep addressed her as he approached, clearing his throat. He made a face which could only be meant as a grin, but came across slightly aggressive.

Nearly jumping out of her skin, Nightshade raised her head and turned slowly to see a very magnificently colored buck in front of her. His moonlit streak glowed and....what was that? His fur smelled wonderful. Taking a step closer, Nightshade smiled, trying to put the obviously tensed buck at ease. "I'm behaving myself, what about you?" Being around others so long had made her able to talk to other without looking stupid, but that didn't mean she wouldn't put her guard down.
The caterpillar she'd been watching absentmindedly swooped onto her back, crawling around near her shoulders. She could feel it tickling her, but she didn't want to move too quickly and have it fall. Reaching around, she scooped the little thing on her nose and set it back on the tree before turning back to the buck in front of her.

Sleep smiled in response to Nightshade's smile, but again the smile came off a little too mischievious. He rolled his shoulders and dragged one of his hooves across the ground, tilting his head to survey the doe. "Ah, well-behaved? Pity." Then a long pause, and finally, "I can't seem to get up to trouble, so I suppose I'm behaving as well. Unless you'd like to start an argument with me?..." Sleep sounded strangely hopeful. He sounded like it was actually something he might enjoy, Nightshade causing him trouble. Then again, maybe he was on another of his thrill-seeking kicks.
"She-who-walks-with-caterpillars?" Sleep grinned again, the cold light from his eyes flickering in amusement. It was a kind gesture, perhaps, but Sleep thought it a little curious. It was just a caterpillar, after all. Not even the lovely stage.

"Well, if neither is misbehaving, what would getting into trouble do for us?" Nightshade asked, slowly circling the buck, smiling. Upon returning to her previous spot, she glanced at the caterpillar and made sure it was alright. The buck's words made her laugh. "I suppose so. You must give life a chance to become beautiful if it is not so right away. And the name is Deadly Nightshade. Yours?" She wouldn't admit it, but she was curious about this buck. Why was he so interested in what she was doing? And how did he get his fur to smell so good? Nightshade did as much to keep herself clean and that was about it. But his fur smelled like flowers. The yellow ones with the white eye...

"I'd like to be up to no good, and I'd like to get in trouble. Why not?" Clearly, something wasn't computing between the two of them. Heavy Sleep loved trouble, so the idea of being in trouble, even for something he wasn't doing, made him excited. This doe seemed to think trouble was something to stay out of. Heavy Sleep shook his head, confused.
He didn't know what to do while she circled him. It was really not normal for a kimeti to walk around Sleep that way. She almost seemed to be speaking in riddles, or addressing someone he couldn't hear. "Life? Beautiful? I'd much rather it become terrible beyond what you could imagine. I want to feel alive. Caterpillars," he paused, nodding his head and huffing, "Just don't do it for me, sweetheart." Sleep pulled back, positioning himself so that he stood in front of a tree, making it difficult to walk around him again. "I'm named after Heavy Sleep," he said. "Cursed, or blessed, without waking." Sleep scuffed the ground with his hoof, carving his glyph: two waving lines above closed eyes. Only four marks in the soil, it was effortless.
"Deadly nightshade, you said?" Sleep seemed to be thinking something over, "Do you think you could hurt me?" He walked over to Deadly Nightshade and this time it was him that circled around her, his tail flicking back and forth against his legs.

Nightshade smiled and stopped, letting Heavy walk around her this time. With an evil glint in her eye, she responded, "I probably couldn't hurt you, being as small as I am. But if you went around the patch where I was born, you'd probably die. That is, if you eat anything in sight." Smiling again, she turned to face him where he was. "Maybe getting into trouble could be something to liven up my day, now that I think about it," she said, looking inquisitive.

"What a pitiful death that would be," Sleep said, huffing and looking away. He stared off into the distance, as if he could see something beyond the horizon, something he wanted to reach. He looked back at Nightshade.
"Yes, getting into trouble has its perks. What else can get the blood boiling quite like doing something you're not supposed to?" Sleep added, amused, hoping to tip the inquisitive doe in the right direction.

Nightshade giggled. Perhaps he was right. "So what do you propose we do?"

Sleep was pleased to see that Nightshade had tipped in a favourable direction. What was better than a doe who could be swayed so easily? Sleep snickered internally; the list was long, he enjoyed a lot of things, especially cleanliness and making trouble. Sleep whipped his glowing silver tail, with its black tuft, back and forth across his legs, scheming.
"There are all kinds of things we could do. We could startle other kimeti. We could catcall, pick fights, make snares, dye water sources harmlessly..." Sleep was feeling violent, at that moment. What he'd love more than anything else was to start a fight and walk away. Anything to make himself feel threatened, if it was even possible. He had known earlier that perhaps messing with an elder was a bad idea, and for a second, he thought that maybe he could feel fear from that encounter.. It was a harmless apprehension. Nettle was not threatening, at least not physically, compared to Sleep's young, strong muscle.

Nightshade grinned devilishly. "You lead, I'll follow." She couldn't really think of anything that she particularly wanted to do, so following Sleep would probably be the best thing.
