Personally, I like buying my own crisp new books with that "new-book smell" you get from its covers. I also love watching my collection build and creep across my floor until I find more shelving space. Libraries are cool too, but sometimes the books can be old and outdated and covered in that plasticky stuff. I guess I just love having a book I can just call my own! 3nodding

I like to know that the chances of anyone touching the book with oggie hands are less on a new book. And some times the books from the library are so musty that they trigger my asthma and alergies. I had to stop reading a series halfway through last year because I couldn't find a new or used copy of book five. and the only copy the library had was so nasty that my hubby was sneezing also halfway into the the first chapter when I started reading before going to bed. yuck! xp
Also, when I find a book I love, I become very possessive of it and don't like to return it to the library. it is irrational, I know.

I prefer to buy. Yeah, it's the smell. Yeah, it's the possessive feeling I get over books.
But mostly it's the irrational anger I get when I see that a book I borrowed has some corners folded down. I HATE IT when people do that to mark their place.
For the record, I use a bookmark or I remember the page number.

I prefer to buy as quite often library books have graffiti or are outdated.

I prefer to read a library copy. If I like it then I'll go out and buy my own. Manga on the other hand I just go and buy.

I almost always buy. If I check out books, its from my school library only because a limited amount of people have had access to them and they therefore don't have that slimy feeling that some public library books have. That being said, I have made a few memorable mistakes when it comes to buying books that turned out to be total crap, which makes me wish I were a bit more open-minded about checking stuff out from a regular public library.

I prefer to buy books because I often go back and read them at least once more, sometimes several more times. This does mean I spend a lot of time in book stores reading the first chapter or so of whatever I'm going to buy. That way I know that at least the beginning isn't terrible.

I prefer buying my own books, for the same reasons as others have already said - clean, new book smell and feeling, and if you love it, you can re-read it whenever you want. I don't like the way that library books get so shabby, with turned-down pages (ugh gonk ) and sometimes people have even written in the margins eek - so, new books are better! It's disappointing when you don't like something after buying it, but you can always give it to a charity shop - someone, somewhere will love it!

Buying is easier for me, since I usually accumulate fees whenever I check something out of a library! xd But libraries are also notably cheaper, and now that I know the Duey Decimel System, easier to navigate. 3nodding
However, working in a library has taught me a few things. If I ever grow up and have kids, I am not borowing board books from the library. Those things have got to be the most germ ridden objects on the planet. gonk

Now, I like to buy books I know I will enjoy over and over again...If only I've known it would be a waste to buy about 50 Boxcar Children books. [I was in that phase for a while]

I rent it from the library and then I buy it if I like it. Which is more often then not. I also love going to the bookstore and buying the first book I see that appeals to me. I'll spend forever in a bookstore making a huge list of books I need to get money for though.
