The disappearing sun caused the sky to darkened to a purple color. The tide had finally begun to rise and Mai couldn't help but smile to herself. She was perched on the cliff, the waves crashing in the distance causing a light spray against her face. Refreshing. Just like the sea itself. She inhaled deeply of the cool salty air and sighed contently. It was the one place she felt at peace.
Some things just can't be avoided.
It was then that she took a deep concentrated breath and headed inland. She might have loved the sea, but a woman needed to eat and her favorite was any kind of bitter berry. The taste was usually a representation of herself, most of the time. Though she could be sweet when the time called for it, or it suited her wants she preferred her own company more than the company of others.
Males, of all species, usually thought with one head. And it definitely wasn't the one on their shoulders. She couldn't stand the fact that all the males she met seemed to have the one thing in mind. Whether it was just compliments on her looks or right out flirting with her, she knew they were nothing of substance. Females on the other hand, at least the ones she had met in the past were nothing to take seriously. They fawned over these useless males and took pride in only family and their males. Really, there's more to life.
But she supposed that's why she used males for that one reason and one reason only. To give her the best possible children she could have. What other purpose could the inferior sex serve?

It was the time of day that the stallion believed was at its most peaceful; the sun was setting in the west. The last rays of the bright orange ball of flame lit up the sky, changing the sky’s colors to blues and purples. The aroma of salt filled the air; waves were heard crashing on the shore far below. It was a soothing sound, one that would lull any one to sleep as the day came to an end.
Háidēs looked down over the cliff, watching with his intense chocolate brown eyes as the bluish green ocean waves crashed against the steep sides of the cliff. The power behind the waves always amazed the stallion, for they had the power to carve and smooth the rocks that they touch, along with the power to take victims down to the bottom of the sea, never to let them go.
Too many mares where like the ocean below, they appear to be calm and collected until something disturbs that peace. But the mare that Háidēs has come in contact with, all react in the same way. They are not cool and collected; they are disgusted and spurn the black winged stallion. It was the reaction that he had to grow up with; he was constantly watched with eyes filled with hatred.
‘Who needs mares? All they will do is turn your life inside out and spit you out when they are done with you. They will do nothing but cause you pain.’ His thoughts whenever they revolved around mares always sounded the same.
The God continued on his way, only to stop short when he came in sight of a mare standing on the cliff face. This was just what he needed… a mare.

Mai turned away from the spray of the sea. It was refreshing, but she needed to keep her mind clear on the task ahead of her. She always planned ahead, it was the way she was, and always would be. Things being planned out just made life easier, simpler. Just the way she liked it. Her sister often said she her mind was alot like a males, simple and straight to the point. But, of course, she scowled at her. She would never compare herself to them.
Her eyes fluttered at first as she spotted a dark figure in the distance. Larger than most she'd seen, winged, and what looked like a rob or cape on him. Hmmm.. Perhaps a new and interesting conquest or someone else to annoyingly fawn over her. Yay! She only hoped it was the former.
Slowly, hooves patting softly against the slick rocks. Pink and Blue tipped wings balancing her as she made her way closer to him, to more flattened land.
Her blue eyes searched him, interest gleaming in her eyes. "Warrior." were the words that left her mouth.

It was coming closer; usually those who resembled it avoided him. Háidēs could feel his body starting to stiffen as the mare made her way toward him. Now that she was closer to him, the God could see that the scarf she wore around her neck represented the ocean that at the moment buffeted the side of the cliff, sending sea spray in various directions. As she walked, the stallion could hear the soft clicking of the sea shell necklace around her pale pink neck. His eyes were drawn to the gold strands woven into her tail, which also contained shells of a pale pinkish purple. ‘Mare’s do the strangest things to their hair,’ he thought to himself.
Talking to other breathing creatures (especially mares) was not his strong suit; he preferred to spend time with stones and narcissus flowers, but now, Háidēs would not be able to ponder the properties of stones because of the pale colored mare approaching him.
Manners; the God had them, but at this moment in time, he did not want to use them. If the mare wanted to talk to him, she would start up the conversation. Háidēs had discovered that whenever he started up a conversation with a mare, it always ended badly.

The male was still stood unmoving. How odd. Had he seen her? It looked as if he was staring straight at her. Mai released a sigh of relief. How refreshing it was to not have someone cheering to share space with.
A smile curved her lips as she stopped a mere couple of inches from him. "Warrior... How surprising to see you." She looked up at the quickly darkening sky above them, which would soon be nightfall. "Are you well?" Hopefully. He seemed like the perfect candidate for this evenings entertainment.

Personal space seemed not to matter to the mare who resembled the ocean; Háidēs let out a sigh, forcing himself to be polite, the dark winged stallion answered the pale colored mare, “Likewise. Well enough,” the next words came strained out of his mouth, “Nymph,” for that is what she reminded the God of, a water spirit, “Are you well this evening?”
Small talk, something that sounded so simple had turned into an arduous task for the stallion. Practice was all that it took, but then again, one had to have the drive to want to improve one’s conversational skills. Háidēs lacked that drive; he enjoyed his ineptness.

Her pearl like wings twitched at her side, anxiously. Why was this stallion not warming up to her? Her smile dipped for a slight moment as she thought on it. Perhaps he was gay? Couldn't be. Though her internal voice told her he was nothing of the sort, what was the problem? Mai had never had a problem luring males before.
The way his voice strained with obvious disinterest. Which, weirdly, irritated her. Was she that boring? "I suppose so. Though I could be better. It seems this handsome Male I was trying to get to know, doesn't want to be bothered." At least he knew her for what she was. Her smile came back with a vengeance, brightening her pale pink cheeks. Perhaps he was just wary of being around others. But why would a male like him have a reason to be? "You don't need to be so tense around me.. If you don't want to talk.. your presence is fine with me." It seemed like some that might soften him, or at least get him to calm slightly in her presence.

Háidēs’ ears twitched at the nymph’s words and tone, she was irritated with him. Seconds passed before the meaning of the mare’s words hit him, ‘she thinks I am handsome? No… I must have heard her wrong or she is just being polite.’ Háidēs was able to convince himself that it was a combination of the two. He ignored her words, since no comeback had come to mind and it just was not worth it.
The god watched the mare as her continence changed from the slight frown she bore when she became irritated with him, to a full on smile. Háidēs shook his head, mares, just one big puzzle that will never be solved.
“Tense, I’m not tense,” his words came out in a gruff voice; he was trying to lie to himself and to the nymph, it was not working. He took in a deep breath of the salty air, trying to calm down and relax. Soon his breathing matched the tempo of the sea as it hit against the cliff face below. It helped, if only a little; his posture seemed relaxed, but his mind was on high alert, his chocolate eyes not leaving the mare.

Mai watched as he considered her words, which as far as she could tell, confused him. But why? Did he simply not understand her, or did he not believe her? Figures, it had to be that he didn't believe her. Smart. Though in a way it saddened her. She wouldn't be winning this stallion over.
Her eyes were still watching him as he took a breath and some of that tension that seemed permanently attached to his shoulders, faded away. Her smile shifted to that of a serene, genuine one, one that seemed to fit her better and brightened her features the way the others couldn't. Even he didn't want her, he might be a worthy male to have in her corner one day, if need be, she decided. "See now. Doesn't that feel better?" she asked. "Now, did you wanna take a little walk around the shore? It's kinda nice around this time. You don't need too, but it might calm you down a bit more."
What the hell was she doing?! Come walk with me? Oh god..
She swung around, careful not to let her hair blow into his face. Taking a couple short steps before turning back to him. "You know, I don't think I asked your name..."

Háidēs blinked his chocolate colored eyes; did she just ask him if he wanted to take a walk on the beach? He must not have heard her right; the stallion replayed the memory in his mind eye. Yes, he had heard her right. Suspicions rose, why would a mare want to walk with him? It is not like he has a pleasant personality that makes others instantly warm to him; there had to be a catch, the stallion thought to himself, but at the moment there appeared to be none. Resigned he accepted the mares offer with a curt nod; a walk on the beach would do him some good. He would treat her how he treats the spirits in his home, with respect, until that respect is lost.
Remembering his manners (it had been a while since he used them last), he bowed to the ocean nymph standing before him, “Nymph, will you lead the way?”
Háidēs’ head jerked up, she was inquiring about his name; so she did not recognize him for who he was. He thought that most of the nymphs had heard the false acquisitions that the goddesses had passed; perhaps she does not listen to rumor or it has not yet reached her? The god thought to himself.
His wings opened a fraction from the folded position on his back, “I am known as Háidēs,” his voice was filled with confidence and boomed, power was in the name. He introduced himself, and now it was her turn, “Nymph, what are you called?”

Mai simply nodded. Waiting for him to recite his name. Haides... Definitely new, but it also sounded fitting. It seemed like a noble name of some sort. "I'm sprite, and my name is Mai." she said with a genuine smile, turning to lead the way around the rocky shoreline.
In this place, she usually tried her best to distance herself from others, only interacting with others when it was a necessity. But lately, it seemed, that she was the one that sought others. Perhaps she was getting lonely... No! her mind fought. She'd never go soft. Never.
She jumped, opening her wings only a moment to catch the wind and set her down gently on a nearby rock formation that lead inland. Shells gently knocking against each other in a gentle melody that only she could hear. "So, where is it you come from anyway? It seems to me like your far away from home."

Háidēs gave his head a slight bow, “It is a… pleasure to make your acquaintance Mai.” And then the mare did something that surprised the stallion, she smiled at him, and it was genuine as well; he was right, she had not heard of the rumors or if she did, she did not pay them any heed.
Black wings filled with gusts of sea air as he followed the mare down to the sandy area below, she seemed so at ease on the rocks that were coated in salt and algae. A sprit, yes, that fit the winged mare before him; this was her domain.
Chocolate brown eyes looked up at the darkening sky, home…, “I come from a land far from here, a country across the ocean, a place known as Cumae.” The God missed his home, but this new strange land was his home now.
