『 THE Story

A small fox had once, centuries ago, had helped lost humans find their way through a dangerous forest, and the legend tells Buddha had granted this animal a great gift. The fox had become a god and had continued to protect the humans of the forest's neighbouring village. Over a period of time, these humans built a path around the forest, allowing only those who have offerings for their god to enter.

Every ten years, there is a festival held in honour of the fox spirit that dwells in the forest shrine at the base of a mountain nearby the local village. Each decade, prayers, chants, gifts, and offerings are held at the outskirts of the shrine during the rainy season. On the last day of the celebration, families come to offer their most beautiful children to the spirit, in hopes of a sunny rainfall to wed their offspring to the deity and bring their future generations infinite luck and fortune. But if the chosen child is later denied, the fox spirit will curse the family and will banish the young man or woman whom was offered into death, leaving their spirit wandering in the living world. The fox spirit has grown tired of these punishments and awful, spoiled humans, so for many decades, nearly a century, he has not chosen a single bride. However, at the newest ceremony, through all the many, nearly a hundred, women, and a handful of men, his gaze is captivated by a beautiful being. A young man, he later finds out, and what a beautiful one at that. And what a day it is; The sun is out while it rains. The deity chooses this man to be his new bride in hopes to capture this human's heart.

This is based off old Japan, so modernity is not allowed.
Also, in folklore, when it rains while sunny it it said that a Fox Spirit is getting married.

ρersonɑʟιтy⋮⋮

I am a silent listener. I am patient and calm, but when I get upset, its more than just any human emotion. Although I may show a serious exterior, I do like my share of jokes and informalities. I enjoy conversation, but mostly I listen. I try to keep my emotions hidden from the humans. The smallest things can amuse me, but the smallest things can also annoy or anger me greatly. I enjoy the peaceful nights with stars glistening in the skies. I don't like humans very much, they pray too much to the gods, begging for things or blaming us for things. But I don't mind a single visitor every decade or so. Sleeping is among one of my favourite pass times, but it doesn't mean that I don't work hard to get what I desire. If I want something bad enough, I will get it, no matter what it it, a whatever the cost. I loved to be entertained, but I also grow bored very easily. Cool and cold water is refreshing, especially to bathe in. I'm also very curious. if something perks my interest I would like to know everything about it, even if I were a cat.

...It is a Blessing in Disguise...

вιoɢrɑρнy⋮⋮

I was once just a fox, an average animal hunting through the woods. Though, I had saved stupid humans from getting lost in the woods and after so long, was blessed by Buddha and given the powers of a god. I now, to this day, am worshipped as a god for keeping demons away and guiding lost humans. The humans had then built me a shrine, at which I currently reside. I am not a guardian of the forest, but of the humans who wander into it. Over the centuries I had grown tails. I have seven tails now. Over these years, these humans have then set a festival to celebrate me every decade. The offerings and gifts are nice, but I cherish genuine conversation and connection more than such material things. But a good shiny pipe or new glistening jewellery are nice too...

ρersonɑʟιтy⋮⋮

Kaito is very quiet and calm person. Many people in his family compares Kaito to still water, though he very much disagrees with them for many reasons. One reason being is that he loves to talk and speak to things. However, being the oldest in his family, he is thought of as the honorable figure that his younger brothers must look up to. When he has the time alone, Kaito loves to speak with any animal that comes his way, particularly butterflies. He longs to be himself, for freedom within his family, but never expresses it to anyone besides the animals. Kaito keeps all of his comments to himself and bottles in his anger. He fears destruction with words so he remains silent and only speaks when addressed to.

...Weight of authority is heavy....

вιoɢrɑρнy⋮⋮

Kaito is the eldest son of three, therefore, it puts all of the family's duties on him. Because he does not speak, he is never has company nor friends over, but is constantly praised because of his silence. Currently, he has been nursing his sick mother, but there does not seem to be much hope for her. He fears that she will die, and is trying to do anything that he can for her.

Water calmly flowed through the ponds and down the small waterfalls surrounding the area. It was quite peaceful, this sacred place. The dim cave beside the water held Shinto ropes that were dangling from the top. Inside laid the fox spirit, glistening pure white, sleeping soundly. His vibrant crystal blue eyes slowly opened, awakening from its slumber.

The deity yawned loudly, showing all of its glistening fangs. Moss and grass had grown everywhere and even began to grow along its many tails. Brushing off the soft patches of foliage, he slowly stood up on his back paws, leaning on the cool stone of the shrine. Peeking outside with keen sight, through all the trees and brush, he saw the many people of the nearby village gathering. His festival was ready to begin.

A new bride! He looked forward to seeing them, the beautiful maidens. If not a bride, then a new soul to keep him company. The fox took a silver ribbon from his haori, tying up his white mane. A few pearls clicked against each other; decorations that he had placed in his long hair. He sat quiet for a moment, watching all the brides gather through the corner of his sharp eyes. So beautiful, but he already sensed some were horrible beings. He did not want that in anyone. Gingitsune's blue eyes became very dark, turning the beautiful sky into a dark grey, cloud baring one. His body became transparent before becoming mist and exiting the sacred shrine.

The spirit weaved through the air, its body taking shape of a very large transparent fox as it reached the ground. Blue eyes gleamed upon each bride and spectator, seeing how small they all were in comparison. His pointed ears twitched at the sound of the humans cheering at him. The furry dog-like face cocked to the side as its red-painted muzzle opened.
"Humans, all of you... I am sure you know the legend well. If I am to choose a bride and love her, your family is to be blessed and have good fortune as long as I live. If my bride is not to my liking, I will banish her, and curse the family who has offered her to me in a life of misery and despair." His voice echoed, as if coming from all directions. It was like silk, however still demanding. He held no hatred or anger in his voice.
"And now, whom is to be my bride...? Step fourth, show me your faces. Tell me your names. If I say nothing to you, you are to leave. If you make a fuss, I will kill you." Gingitsune felt fairly bored, seeing no one to his interest immediately. He laid himself down, crossing his front paws. The tips of his tails swayed lazily in all but unison. He listened carefully to their voices, hearing their arrogance, vanity, pride. Even fear, reluctance, even despair. He would not take this. He growled deeply at a small group, not opening his mouth.

Yes, these brides were beautiful, but only on the outside. They were either too frightened of him or too proud. He would not have a wife who would be afraid to stay with her husband. Nor would he have a wife who would be demanding or bratty. But they showed their respect. Every last one of them. It almost sickened Gin how they were all the same. Each having porcelain white faces, as if to match the beauty of the maiko, let alone geisha. Painted lips and eyes, decorative yukata...
These women knew nothing of beauty. Some voices were too shrill, it almost hurt the fox's ears. Other's were too quiet. So quiet he had to strain himself to hear. They were sent off without word.

One at a time, families seemed to push their daughters to the fox. One by one, he denied them, some without having hearing their names. The fox licked its red-tipped paw before something, or rather someone, had finally caught his eyes. His ears perked and his tails stopped swaying. One in particular finally seemed to stand out. But...
Tilting his head, Gingitsune let his eyes carefully examine her from afar. He anticipated seeing the woman up close. The air about her was different than the others. Was his eyes deceiving him in his age, already? This woman was a bit more masculine but still beautiful. No, she smells like a human male...

Soft pitter patter of tabi dressed feet on the wood flooring was the first sound distinguished in the all but silent Kawahashi household. The sound of Mother's bitter hacking could be heard from the servants quarters, waking everyone in the household yet again. Yet, loud as her coughs were, Mother only called for one child: Her eldest son, Kaito, who had been taking her health as his first priority. He had awoke even before the strained coughing had begun to fetch water and wake the second child Hyosuke to aid him.

"Go and fetch my newest yukata, and wake the rest of the household as I take Momma her tea," Hyosuke, being the obedient boy that he was, went on without audible complaints about his duties. Silently, Kaito slipped himself inside his mother's room with tea and a breakfast. He was only able ever to cook rice in the late hour, but today was special and he had given her miso soup with a side dish of tsukemono pickles. There were grunts of disapproval from Mother, but, as Kaito sat watching her eat, the humphs merely died down to coughs and loud slurping and chewing.

Mother was not an old woman, but her health was as if she could be ninety. She had been married at a young age, making her only twelve years older than Kaito. Although she was young, she was given the leisure life of a Lord's first wife and smoked and drank. Sometimes Kaito would overhear the servants say that it was because she tried to laugh amongst the men that she was cursed with an old man's sickness. Kaito, however, never listened and only watch the wrinkled thirty yeard old woman as he tended to her.

"Momma," Kaito started softly, keeping his hands clenched tightly on his knees. His mother only made another grunting sound, "I am going to give myself to fox spirit, and ask for him to make you better," As a response, Momma threw what was left of her luke warm soup on her son's face, looking disgusted and frightened. Kaito only blinked what liquid had been caught in his eyes away and continued, "I have been told by many young woman in the street - servants, geishas, - that I am a beautiful man. There once was also a time that a man told me I was beautiful. If I am as claimed to be, then perhaps the fox spirit will take me and, if I beg and give my body to him, he may cure you."

"Kaito," Hyosuke's pubescent voice had broken through the paper screen that was the door to the room, "Brother, we can see the sun in the sky, and most of the village has left already." Kaito raised his eyes to his mother before nodding off and dismissing himself. Because of the occassion, he had decided that he would bathe and be clean for the fox spirit; though, preparing himself was done at an achingly slow pace. He was doing this for his mother and not for himself. Kaito had no desire whatsoever to be the bride of the fox spirit.

The yukata that donned Kaito's toned body was made of the softest cotton and colored with dye to be a radiant, shining blue. It was of one color and one shade, but fitting for the boy of eighteen. Fresh, clean tabi replaced the ones he had previously worn, and his raven black hair combed and neatly placed. He did not wake his younger sisters or brother to say goodbye, and left with Hyosuke by his side.

The cave to the fox spirit was not far, but the boys still had to move at a fast pace. Kaito was giving his brother instruction on how to take care of the family, how to set and boil tea for Momma, what time to wake up, etc. Hyosuke was only half-listening and, instead, gave reasons why Kaito wouldn't be picked by the fox spirit and why he should go back. "This is for Momma," Kaito said as he pushed himself forward through the crowd, "If it is the only way, then I will sacrifice everything to keep her alive. Even if it means giving my whole to the spirit." Hyosuke opened his mouth to protest, but his elder brother turned his back to him, closing the subject.

The gingitsune had stopped paying attention to the girls who introduced themselves to him one at a time. He only dismissed them, wanting to see the face of the human who has piqued his interest. Using his front paws, he scooted himself a little closer, his snout reaching past the other women who were next to sniff the one he suspected as a man. A striking blue colour, he was wearing, not like the burning reds and oranges many others wore, or the dull greys and whites the arrogant ones wore, thinking they'd become his bride then and there. He nudged the human with his snout before pulling back.
"Come here, tell me your name." He ordered. Jealous and angry faces of women were all around; some were relieved and perhaps disappointed in the slightest.
The fox ignored them, laying his head down as his icy blue eyes fixated on the human. His tails then began to sway together, back and forth, slowly across the ground.

So, this beautiful being really was male? A man, just as beautiful than these women? Surely, this was the answer as to why no woman was suitable for him. Delicate figure and beautiful face. This was his choice. This creature would be his new found bride. And even if he later decides to kill him, Gin was sure he could at least make could company, even dead.

"What a lovely face..." The fox complimented, a sly smile gracing his muzzle. "Your eyes are beautiful, they have magnificent colour in certain light." He stated gently. "You, a young man among these brides, are far greater than I have ever laid my eyes on. If you were a woman you may be just as beautiful as any of them... But being a young man, this beauty comes rare and so you are more dazzling than these women could ever accomplish. You are to be my newest bride."
Gin put care into choosing his words. Each word was true. To see a man with such beauty is greater than the natural beauty of a woman. "You are to come with me, back into the sacred lands."

Locking eyes with the fox spirit made Kaito want to cringe, kneel, and beg for meeting his gaze, but he stood his ground and lifted his chin ever so slightly. He swallowed hard, turning his head to the side as he was sniffed and called forth. Absolute fear had began to dwell inside of Kaito the longer he stood in front of the spirit, and he was sure that it was obvious in his face and body language.

"My name is Kawahashi Kaito," He stated. His fingers were locked with Hyosuke's, and as he stepped forward, they slid out of his brother's hands. They were brief moments, but in those moments, his fingers stung with heartache. He was longing for home again. "Though you have found me to be pleasing, I will not accompany you unless you grant me one wish. If my wish is not granted, then I will kill myself here and now." Several gasps came from around as he reached into the sleeve of his yukata and pulled out a sheathed dagger and held it to his neck.

"Kaito!" Hyosuke called him, but he did not turn or move the blade. Kaito was glared back at Gingistune with determination in his eyes, trying not to falter or look the least bit doubtful in himself and in his words. More cries from Hyosuke came from behind him as he knelt on his knees in front of Gingitsune.

"I am serious in my words and will take my life here," Kaito swallowed again. His voice had become dry and he felt microscopic compared to the large entity, and, for a second, he shuddered.

The fox eyed the man seriously, a deep growl escaping his throat. The fox bared his fangs before sitting up; his blue eyes forming pupils in the shape of slits. "Foolish..." He called, but he closed his mouth and his eyes became clear once more. "I have limits, little one... Would it be wise to anger a god, doom your village, and die all at the same time, after centuries of my protection to everyone here? How bold of you." Gin's ears pulled back as his paw wiped his face. Amusement shone in his face as his tails curled around his legs. "I will grant this wish, along with fortune and luck... When I am pleased with you, Kawahashi Kaito. If not, I will kill you myself, anyway." Gingitsune would have shrugged casually if it were not for his demon form. This man was entertaining, defiant even. Was this a sense of pride, as well? Something the others had too little or too much of...

"If you drop your blade now, I won't take it from you. And you,"
he turned to look at the human who called to Kaito. "Keep quiet, young one." Gin demanded, keeping a sensible kindness in his tone. Turing his gaze back to the Kaito, Gingitsune tilted his head. What could be so important to this human that he would take his own life? Or was he one of those creatures who wanted nothing more but wealth? The thought of that made the fox spirit growl shortly. "Now... Are you to be my bride, or will I have to kill you myself and go on with the others?" He stated coldly. He did not blink as he stared at the human clad in blue, daring him to try. A game, this was, to him. But the fox told no lies.

Kaito remained silent as the entity spoke to him. His act was foolish, he would admit it outloud to anyone, but he would not have his mother die to leave his younger brothers and sisters alone. That was the last thing that Kaito would want for his family. As Hyosuke was told to remain quiet, Kaito dropped his gaze to the floor and stood, dropping the dagger to the ground with a clang. It took all of his will not to throw any other beautiful woman in the crowd at the spirit and yell for him to take her, but that was something that would make the human look weak. He wouldn't have that.

"I will be your bride, then," The words came out of Kaito's mouth were distasteful and full of doubt, but he somehow managed to sound somewhat hopeful. "I give my body to you, and hope that you are satisfied with me." He bowed as deeply as he could, eyes to the floor. Kaito was not sure what the fox would do with him in that state; nor, was he sure if the spirit had any other forms besides that of a fox, but he assumed there was if he longed for a bride. What was in store for him, the boy would not know and he would have to only hope that it was something tolerable. Perhaps he should have picked up the dagger and kept it with him in case he had wanted to end his life early; though, that thought was selfish to the boy. He'd have to bear his new title until he died.

Kaito stood in his bowing position, waiting for Gingitsune to order him to move or pardon the citizens of their leave. Closing his eyes, he gave one final goodbye to his mother and siblings, and prayed that Buddha would give his brother the wisdom and strength to carry the family on his shoulders.

Satisfied with the outcome, Gingitsune smiled inwardly and nudged the young man with his snout. "Good boy..." He said, using his tails to pull the small being close to him, like a precious possession. "I am sure you will enjoy it. It is a peaceful place, the most extraordinary the human world has to offer." The fox gently leaned over the human, using his paw to carefully scoop him up, holding him very carefully. Without another word, his blue eyes closed as his body became thick mist. A bubble formed around the young man's body, protecting him. An extension of the mist grasped the bubble in which Kaito was imprisoned, weaving through the air as it headed towards the shrine in the forest. The skies lightened, showing the sun once more, as the fox disappeared with Kaito. Droplets of water started to fall from the skies until it then began to rain.

The deity floated slowly as it came to its home, gently hovering down onto the waters. The mist set down the young male, letting the bubble pop soundlessly.
Gingitsune took physical shape again, but this time in a smaller size. he was still slightly taller than the other male, but not as large as he had been before. He had a human shape now, with pale skin and silvery hair. Around his eyes and on his lips was faint red, as well as his finger tips. His tails loosely swayed and his feet for red-tipped paws. His kimono was a silvery grey, his obi white to contrast, and his haori was grey that faded to black. The only colour about him seemed to be a bright blue pattern that matched his eyes on a single shoulder. The thick and lush moss was soft under his back paws.
He looked to his soon-to-be bride with gentle blue eyes, softly touching his face with two long and sharp red nails. "Come. My home is just over there." Gin stated gingerly as he guided Kaito with his hand.
The cave of the shrine was not far from where they were. Willows, cherry and peach trees, as well as maples and firs were all about. Flowers of all kinds were in full bloom. Gin reached out and took a peach blossom, gently placing it in his Kaito's hair.
"Do you like it here...?" He asked quietly, smiling like the fox he was, his white ears twitching in the slight breeze.

Being swept up by the large paws and tail made Kaito squirm on the inside. Although the fur and touch to him was soft and gentle, he was still afraid of the over-sized fox, especially being so close. He tried not to make a squealing sound as he was swept up in the bubble and taken to a damp cave. The inside of the cam was dim and damp, instantly setting Kaito's hopes plummeting. Was this where he was to be living? He turned his attention back to the spirit and found a man had taken his place. A beautiful man. Kaito averted his gaze as Gingitsune carressed his face, his face growing a hot pink. Compared to the newly formed man in front of him, he was but a lowly commoner in looks and in stature.

Silently, Kaito followed after Gingitsune, afraid that he would be punished or killed if he were to speak out. He was pulled into a clearing that seemed to be over abundant in fruits and and flowers. Unable to hold in his awe, Kaito let out an amazed gasp; his hands went up to cvoer his mouth as he stared at the everything. Never before had he seen so many beautiful things in his life. And all at once. He was surprised he had fainted.

"It's lovely," Was his simple answer to the entity, "I feel that I cannot express what I feel now with words." Kaito's features molded into one of happiness and contentment rather than bleek and tense. A small smile happened upon his face as he stared upon all of the nature, hands reaching up to brush against the peach blossom that rested in his hair. "It truly is beautiful." He sighed out once more.

Gingitsune

Gingitsune was glad to hear Kaito's voice in such a happy light. An arm slowly wrapped itself around the boy's waist, gently pulling him along. His tails dangled, seemingly lifeless then, but had started tapping lightly at Kaito's ankles playfully as he walked forward. Gin silently continued forward, holding Kaito gently beside him along the soft and dewy grass. A coming closer to the shrine itself, a few paper lanterns hung from trees, evenly spaced apart. The entry way was a fleet of steps with stone lamps on either side. The steps were covered in mosses and vines, as were the old stone lamps. Looking up to their destination, Gingitsune sighed. "Why must humans exaggerate something so simple?" He asked aloud, pulling away from Kaito as he stepped ahead, ascending the stairway. "This has been here for such a long time; before your great ancestors' time and beyond, I would believe. They built this for me. Though I am flattered, I prefer the wilderness." Gin shared this short story as he stepped up, peeking over his shoulder to steal a glance from Kaito.

A large building had come into the fox spirit's view, with angled roofs and stone decorations all about it. The shrine entrance gate was a fiery red colour and stood out against all the green. "This is where you and I will stay together," Gin informed as he stopped along the path and stepped to the side.
Exploration would be a good idea, he thought. He would be able to show his new bride the wonderful things in this forest. The plants and animals that reside in this place would surely be an interest to this human, right? Gin decided he would show him later. Tilting his head to the human, he smiled. "Are you hungry? There is plenty of fruit if you want me to get you any. Fish as well." He offered, his icy eyes watching Kaito curiously as his tails twitched.

Kaito made a small gasping noise when he had felt the tails twitching at his ankles. He did not mind the arm around his waist; in fact, he felt close to safe in the other male's arms even though he was the cause of Kaito's fear. The rest of the way, Kaito kept his eyes to floor, only looking up to be certain that he wouldn't be running into anything or stumping his foot. The entity went up to mutter something about the shrine and this was when Kaito took to shuddering away all of his fears, doubts, and regrets. He would have to step into his life with the spirit with hope and strength. Being the eldest son, a bride of the fox spirit, and his own somehwat stubborn self, he would not appear weak or fragile in front of the the other.

As the sealer for his silent pact with himself, Kaito let out a soft breath and went along with Gingitsune. The land they were to live on was beautiful, matching the rest of what he had seen, but Kaito couldn't stop wondering how many other beautiful women have been here, how many of them have died, and how many of them still stayed. Kaito lifted a soft gaze up at Gin, keeping his head tilted at angle to the ground. "I would like some breakfast," He said as soft as his gaze, "I had to put that aside when I awoke." His fingers played with the fabric of his clothes, hinting he was becoming nervous.

There was a brief moment when Kaito wanted to explain why and go on about his sick mother to try and earn pity from the spirit, but he quickly tossed that notion aside. He would not gain pity and he would not beg. Fingers curling into his fabric, Kaito looked back down. If he had decided no pity, then what would he use as leverage to gain affection from the fox?

Gingitsune

Gingitsune nodded quietly and reached out his hand, taking Kaito's arm gently to lure him into the temple. "I will get you something, then." He said, releasing the young man's arm and opening the doors to the temple. Few things decorated the inside of the temple. Different rooms with basic items; tables, mats, and other things of the sort. The silence inside is what bothered Gin the most; without the company of someone until every ten years, the place was quite lonely. Another reason he preferred the nature. The singing birds and other creatures of the forest provided nice enough company.

"I'm sorry, it is very bland. I almost never come here except for occasions as this. I will advice you, only once, however. Do not, under any circumstances enter the black room. It is sealed tightly for a reason." He warned, crossing his arms before walking past Kaito, back outside. "You may come with me, or stay here. I will be back." The fox said, quickly striding outside and back down the steps without another word. He did not look back to see if the human was following him. Gin followed the path of flowering trees, looking around to find any that had bared fruit already. He picked a few ripened fruit of various sorts, collecting them in his arms. He turned to head back, but something caught his eye. A magnificent flower of deep red hue with mixed white. Gin smiled and picked that as well, hiding it in the fruit that he had picked before returning to the shrine temple.

"This fruit is one other gods have given me after my blessing from long ago," He said, smiling sincerely as he took a red sphere, bearing darker red seeds on the outside. It was about the size of an orange, in comparison. "It's very sweet and has no pit or core to worry about. Try it?" He offered, taking the soft and partly fuzzy fruit and holding it to Kaito.

Kaito was lead into the household. He was almost surprised to see that there was not much that decorated the interior. What he was expecting was something close to fur rugs, masks, and usual wonders that only emperors could afford, but here there were simple mats and tables. He was given the option of following or staying, and he decided to stay. While waiting for the spirit to return, Kaito took a seat upon the floor and let only one tear pass from his eye. Was it the two of them alone? Would he have no other company with him?

There was noise in the room once again and Kaito turned to see that Gin had returned with fruit. Kaito's stomach made a lurching motion within him and he clasped his hands over his abdomen, trying to still the growl of hunger. He was offered the fruit and tried his best not to eat it greedily. To his best ability, he ate with small bites, enjoying and savoring the sweet fruit. Licking his lips, he looked up at Gin when he had finished, a grateful look crossing his face. "Thank you," He said, bowing his head, "It was very sweet and satisfying."

Kaito made to wipe his mouth with his sleeve, but found it rude to do so in front of the other so he merely rolled his lips in and licked them clean to the best of his ability. He looked about him, mainly staring at the walls. "May I ask why there aren't treasures decorating your walls?" He turned back to the entity, features becoming relaxed as he sat.
