It's not obvious to many people what Gaga is about. Can't really blame them. Her art is quite difficult to decipher and non-fans might not be aware of it because they don't know enough about her aims and intentions.
I think it's also because mindless, shallow, manufactured pop music has been force fed to us for years so much so that we have become de-sensitized to the entire genre. We start to believe that everything in the charts is 'just' pop music, which means it has no lyrical or artistic merit. Indeed, you don't even have to think when you hear it.
With this mindset, hearing Gaga brings about the same reaction. We aren't encouraged to look deeper at lyrics any more, at least not in the pop scene.
Anyone who makes fun of Gaga's obscure lyrics: just stop and wonder why they are obscure. Perhaps they mean more than they're letting on.
This girl eats, sleeps and breathes music: it's part of her and she never stops writing songs, no matter where she is. It's rare to find an artist who devotes themselves to their work so completely. She's trying to change the world with her music in more ways than one: both in shaking up the charts and how we think of pop music, but also to make a difference to people's lives, like when she donated all her funds from her New York shows to the Haiti fund and selling her own brand of MAC lipstick where all fund go towards AIDS victims. She's the greatest thing to happen to pop music since the millennium.

perhaps people don't understand her because gaga may have parts to her she doesn't understand as well, just like everyone else. we all have parts of ourselves we need to learn about and discover on our own through time. this doesn't mean she doesn't know who she is at all. she knows that she is an artist, performer, musician, and much more. Gaga has a strong, smart mind. she knows what she is doing.
music is her way of expressing her feelings. unfortuantely, people/musicians these days may start to write music for all the wrong intentions. fame and money. (this is why sometimes music IS shallow... we can't just imagine every thing as good when there ARE bad aspects to thos world) and guess what? Gaga DOES love fame as well, but her motives aren't shallow. while others do it for themselves/money, she devotes her art to her fans and for causes she strongly believes in (gay).
for people to criticize her music just by listening to a single song ARE being shallow themselves when they could have simply just state "it's not my taste" instead of bashing/insulting her. same goes for gaga fans as well...
maybe people are just too lazy/Busy to search for deeper meanings :/... i mean, America's reading comprehension level has been DECREASING for a longgg time now. how could analyzing poetic lyrics be any easier? i think people of America need to..... slow down a bit to enjoy the more detailed parts of life that would not be seen through all this chaos. my side of society focuses much too much on colleges, money, social statuses, etc... to enjoy the whole beauty of things. lady gaga shows us we can do both. she knows how to use pop culture AND art to teach us to move FORWARD in a more progressive way.
i think i got off track a bit...... but maybe i was just trying to say was that people should take their time to see the reason behind gaga's music to experience the beauty in her work

Something can be hard to understand when you've chosen to study it for 1/10th of the time that it deserves to be studied.
The club beats of Gaga's music implies to the majority of Americans that it is just a dance song. Hell, I didn't really start looking deeper into her lyrics until she started explaining them in interviews. How did I get to interviews? I had to be proactive and actually search it up on YouTube. All the haters don't go that extra step to find out more about Gaga.
Sigh, I don't know. It's also hard to understand someone/something when logic is clouded by negative emotions. Some people say they don't know why they don't like Gaga, they just have to change radio stations when they start hearing her beats.
Oh well. I'm interested in seeing what other people have to post on this topic.

I've also thought about this, and she is fairly difficult to decipher, but she really wouldn't be that great of an artist if she had the meaning of all her works out in the open. Lady Gaga wants her fans to keep their minds active by thinking for themselves, and of course you can't really think if the real answer is sitting right in front of you. It completely defeats the purpose of what she's trying to do, so obscurity is by far the best way to do so.
On the other hand, this sounds a tad paranoid but Gaga could pull a fast one. Not to say she's the kind of person who would do something so underhanded, but think about it: write catchy pop music for the dumbasses of society, and to reel in the intellectuals you weave in some in-depth, meaningful artistic value to what you're doing. I doubt she would do anything like that but when you consider it, it's a brilliant way to cash in on the intellectual extremes that society's demographics has in store. confused

This third album will confirm it for me but I guess it is just paranoia.

I've been told it's going to be released New Year's Eve or so.

OMG look what i can do with my bubbles! i never knew!
ok so on a more serious note.....
i kinda just noticed this but.... i think studying her music is more about studying her unconscious thoughts. like, she would write with a certain intention, but like ANY artists/ writers/ musicians out there, there is a part in the masterpeices that are to be analyzed differently. Gaga may have a part/story in her unconscious thoughts that "slips" as she is writing her music. if we/SHE is able to analyze some parts of this puzzle CORRECTLY*, i believe we/she would be able to discover her "truer" self.... something i picked up in english class rofl tell me if it makes any sense the way i said it
*too many times there were cases of "over analyzing" or "making stuff up"

It's not a bad method at all to grab people from both ends of the intellect spectrum, but I'm pretty sure it was her primary weapon in the beginning. Now I'm assuming she'll spend much more time on her lyrics from the get-go of writing a song. I don't know about you guys, but Telephone, Pokerface, Just Dance, and some others aren't all that deep to me. I love them to death, but I can just pull a Britney, Ke$ha, or Xtina song and turn it into something it isn't either: extensively profound. EDIT: Oh, and for the third album .. I've heard two of the songs that are going to be on there so far. "You and I" and "Changing Skies". I posted "Changing Skies" in the Music subforum.

I posted "Changing Skies" in the Music subforum. i agree with Telephone and Just Dance but as i said in my last post, i think ALL of her music could be analyzed to a certain degree just because music= expression. now that i think about it, even those music which are motivated only by money and fame could have a "deeper" meaning in them as well when it comes to learning about the artist. I mean, we can question, "why is this artist so in need of money? is there a bad history to this?" and so on....... or i'm just thinking too hard now godddd too tired for this. all i can say now is that some pop music have much more deeper meanings.... but it doesnt mean that songs like "telephone" In my case dont have ANY substance in them. this reminds me of english class again when I actually asked the teacher if people could be over analyzing a material ..... she said YES but then brought up some "subconscious thoughts" ideas. i dont know what to believe sometiems. gaga's gaga.... and gaga's good. that's all i know for sure.
