With all of this talk of the Lieberman "Killswitch" Bill and the encroachment on privacy by intelligence services in recent years, both abroad and domestically, I feel that we have a right to privacy and so does StartPage.

http://www.startpage.com/

This search engine claims to not record your IP or any other personal information. If you want to be really private you can use the encrypted version.

https://www.startpage.com/

They have a proxy service that will allow you to visit any page anonymously (over an encrypted connection if you use the second link).

I thought this might be interesting and useful to everyone here.

EDIT: April16th 2012

Everyone should look into using Tor the onion network.
I use it for everything now, except I can't watch videos on it -_-

...what exactly is a company like Google going to do with your search results? We've already seen that Google is anti-censorship (they withdrew from China after they kept forcing Google to censor their results)

The worst that can happen will be that we get targeted advertising (OH NO!!)

Or something happens akin to what AOL did that ended up putting private user data on the web for everyone to see...

If they collect the data there's the risk of that data being stolen and exploited.

Thank you for these.

@sciamancer: One of the google bigwigs has already pretty much said be careful what you do online, because they will give up sensitive information if they need to.

I don't know if this belongs here but I don't know where else it would go and don't want to make it its own thread.

Putting up your IP address, your browser, your operating system, your search interests, etc. is throwing out all the pieces that a nefarious individual would need to compromise your computer, if they were so inclined.

It may not be your real name and your SSN, but it could quickly lead to that.

You know that encrypting your IP address is a felony, right?

I'd like a citation for that but it's irrelevant considering you're not encrypting your IP address.

You're using Secure Socket Layer encryption (built into most browsers and typically used whenever you sign into your email) and you're using a proxy. Your actual IP address is never touched. Your ISP just can't peep in on what your doing (SSL) and the proxy makes it so that the recipient of your traffic doesn't know its true source. This essentially keeps you anonymous.

Interesting. My mom actually has this as her home page. She heard of it through this one radio program Coast To Coast AM I think.

I use Google Chrome, though, so obviously I'm not too worried about what google "spies" on me usually.
I mean, what are they going to do about me searching up something like, "Shiva" or "Kumquat" in it's search to go to wikipedia?

I also like having my websearch history on my google account to look back on over the years.

I might start to use this for my torrenting though. That's about the only thing I'm a 'lil paranoid about.

true but other sites sometimes look back in your history and such, and google chrome, while it works excellently, seems untrustworthy, having your account hooked up to your browser... it basically means google has possibly our every password and login, and such. :[

I suggest using firefox for your torrenting wink

Linux is possibly the most secure OS, but you should have a tecchie whom you trust to help teach you how to be secure.

As a side note, check out portableapps.com...
Not all computers are able to boot via disk or flash drive, so you wont be able to use ubuntu all the time. sad
