The intensifying heat of summer hard worn Candy out, resting on a cool patch of grass at the waterside Candy had made herself comfortable. It was uncommon for her to wonder away from her mate since meeting him. She was his muse, he was her artistic wonder. The two now expecting parents. Her legs ached somewhat from carrying around the extra weight. The cool air that came off the water not to far from her was soothing though. In an almost dazed state of mind she stared blankly out at the water, completely at peace with herself, lost in the beauty of the evening sun.

The sun was setting. It had been hot lately below the waves, hotter above, too, but at least the air was more sensible when the sun set. Being born in the North, he was not overfond of summer. Sighing, but still determined to see the world above the waves, he swam upward, his finned head the color of an iceberg lit by the Aurora Borealis shattering the surface of the water into thousands of sparkling, liquid diamonds lit by embers of the burning sun.

He looked around for any landers, and soon spotted a colorful one. As he swam over, his head partially submerged, like the predator he was when he wasn't around something that could be nastier than him or fascinated him, he noticed her belly. It was distended, not just like she'd eaten too much. This went beyond that. And it fascinated him in some bizarre sense.

"Excuse me, but I em vondering vhy your stomach iz like zat?" he asked in his most polite terms, the Northern accent coming out in full force partially by accident.

She gave a small start when she saw his head rise from the water, her ears perking up high. She didn't know what it was but her eyes remained locked on it. They followed it to the shore where her eyes widened when it spoke, "Oh dear the heat must really be getting to me.. The fish are talking." She stared at the water wide eyed, having never seen anything like him before.

Despite understanding what he said it took her a moment to decide if she should respond to the "talking fish" or not. Her head slowly tilted to the side, her eyes moving to look down at her belly. "My stomach.. Well... My artist did it to me." She made a slight face knowing that answer would do no good to answer the question at hand, "I'm expecting children. I'm going to be a mother."

This got Gahz'rilla's head out of the water. "I em not a feesh, I em a Mer," he responded with a touch of indignation. He cocked his head at her explanation of her stomach. "There are cheeldren in your stomach?" he asked with a touch of incredulity and confusion. "How vill zey leave your stomach?"

The idea of carrying one's unborn offspring in one's stomach was confusing and worrying, and every idea that crossed his mind as to how the little ones could be born filled him with terror for the poor, lovely lander. Gahzi, it should be mentioned, had had no siblings and had never been the sociable or curious sort where mothers and pregnant females of any species were involved.

"A.. Mer? Is that like a fish?" Candy's face was one of confusion, she'd never seen one of his kind before, his appearance was completely new to her and she sat for a moment wondering what he looked like under the water and how he could live in the water without drowning. 'Of course he can live underwater and not drown! Fish don't drown!' she thought to herself.

"In my stomach.. I don't think they're quite in my stomach." She nudged her round baby bump of a belly, a smile on her face, "I think there is a special place in there that makes them right at home until they're ready to come see the world." She was excited, the whole idea of motherhood was probably as new to her as it was to Gahzi. "I'm quite excited to get to meet them though! I talk to them sometimes.. It sounds kinda silly but, maybe they can hear me right? And.. Their father paints them some of the most beautiful pictures." Her mate was an artist of sort, a flutter with a taste for leaving his mark and Candy was his muse.

"Eet ees not exactly like a feesh. A mer ees a Soquili who leeves in ze sea and cannot go on land. Mers haf fins and tails like feesh, but we breathe ze same air as landers and care for our leettle ones like ze landers," he explained, a little surprised she knew nothing of mers. Well, admittedly, there were not a few lander stories about the fierce hydra mers, but maybe there were hardly any stories about mers here. Strange, but possible.

He cocked his head, his turquoise eyes fixated on her tummy. Having an extra organ in one's body for offspring sounded odd, but it did make sense. All the other organs had a use, right? So it only made sense that they have a new organ to carry children in. His only noticeable response was a slow nod in response to the comment about the extra organ, and a rare smile in response to talking to the children. "Ze cheeldren are alive in zere, are zey not? So, zey can hear you. Zey must be able to." The comment about the children's father didn't entirely interest him, generally because he didn't even hear of many artists in the North, but there had been some famous and gifted ones.

"A mer, a mer, a mer..." She repeated it to herself in a subtle whisper before trying to look over what she could see of him and imagine what the rest of him looked like based on the description she was given about a mer. They were quite interesting details as far as she was concerned really. "Mer are really quite interesting in.... design, I must say."

She turned her attention back to her belly and gave it another soft nudge, "Yep, they're as alive as you and me in there. I have to make sure that I eat enough and rest enough so that they stay well." She flicked her ears at the commented about them being able to hear her, she always figured they could, she talked to them quite often hoping they could anyways. "I'm sure they can hear me, I always tell them how much I love them after all. They seem quite happy when I do! It's like a warm and fuzzy feeling."

Gahz'rilla tilted his head. A warm and fuzzy feeling? He definitely didn't know what that was, having never experienced it himself. Maybe that was part of parenthood? A thought that would take experimentation. Some other time. As for the eating more...well, she was feeding herself and her children, right? Perfectly reasonable. As for the sleeping....

"I em sorry, but why do you haf to sleep more?" he finally asked, a touch confused. "I em sure eet makes sense to mothers, but I em afraid eet does not make sense to me," he admitted with a touch of embarrassment and guilt.

"Why must I sleep more? Well.. Rest is good for you body. And, my mate prefers if I don't get stressed over things so a nice nap here and there works wonders to keep me relaxed. I've heard before that stress can hurt the young ones. I'd rather not risk that." She's smiled at him, she shared his feeling of confusion on the subject, she was a first time mother and hadn't expected to be so this soon. She herself was learning as she went along, being told and taught things by others.

"All and all though, through curiosity and the unknown, I am very excited to meet them," She looked at the mer and smiled, her head held high in a motherly pride.
