His mother had performed the rite yesterday, withstanding the sea so that they might join the pride. For Ur, this was an entirely novel idea. Ever since he could remember, he and his mother had wandered alone, eeking out a life in the danger of the roguelands. Despite his youth, he was highly aware of the sober advantages of now belonging to a group of lions with an established territory. His mum's relief as she'd emerged from the ocean had been as evident as the water cascading from her coat.
So now Ur wa free to roam safely from the watchful gaze of his mother. Wary but in awe of the chance, he began a slow exploration. He'd seen the beach already, with the restless sea reachign hungry, beckoning fingers up onto the sand. Instead, he now turned to the jungle growing so tall and green nearby. It amazed him how green everything was here. Even the sea was green sometimes!
Under the spotty canopy of trees of all sizes, the air was cool and sweet. It lacked the fierce or sultry heat he'd felt everywhere else they'd travelled. Involuntarily he gave a great sigh of something approaching contentment. With increasing interest, he looked about himself as he padded deeper into the jungle. This place had a way of making him feel small, but not in a weak or vulnerable way. The ocean was vast, the jungle contained massive trees, the cliffs towered high above his head, and the beach seemed to stretch on forever in either direction. Here in the jungle, he found vines as thick as his spread paw. The space between the roots of some of the trees was plenty large enough for a full grown male to bed down for the night in comfort. There were leaves on some low lying plants that were nearly as big as he!
Intrigued and eager to explore more, he scrambled up one arching, massive root, claws digging into the tough bark. It felt good to sink his claws into the wood, and he paused a moment to mock-attack the root, growling and hopping about, smacking the bark with his claws extended. His purpose of getting up higher to look around was completely forgotten in his spontaneous moment of play and pretending.

Returning from a night on patrol the very large black and white lions feet dragged tiredly. A wide yawn stretched his maw as he padded under the trees canopy, his tail flicking tiredly. Poseidon was a monster to look at, with the blood of a firekin and pridelanders running through his veins he had always been a formidable looking creature ever since he dropped in to adulthood. Of course that impression was always something others thought from a distance, close up, he couldn't have been friendlier. "'Nother day gone Amphitrite." He sighs continuing on his huge jet black bulk occasionally invisible in the shadows though he quickly reappeared again with a shimmer of white fur. "Lets get home to bed then Posey!" She sings, her voice light and airy as she flits around her friends head. "Hey, theres someone up ahead." She click her beak and lands on Poseidon's head, a small enough bird that his mane almost covers her body.Blinking golden eyes he looks ahead at the young male, yawning once again before managing a greeting "Ahoy there matey, what brings you out in to the jungly fronds this day hmm?" He smiles. Despite his giant size, Poseidon was probably the friendliest creature you'd ever meet. "Can I be helpin' ya laddy? Yer aint lost are ya?"

At the jolly deep voice the juve looked up to see the approaching male. His first gut instinct was to crouch defensively, drawing breath to yowl for his mother. In the roguelands that'd have been the only way to assure his own safety and survival. Too often, his mother taught him, males killed any cubs they came across that weren't their own. And this lion was a monster! Even on his arched root, Ur nearly had to look up to meet his eyes. For several heartbeats he cringed, jaws gaping as he realized his mother wasn't in hearing distance. What had he done by wandering so far??!
But then the stranger's words sank in, and he was reminded of the pleasant reality. He wasn't alone, but was in the pride's territory. Thus, any here were friends and pridal members. Which tended to make him look rather foolish, crouching away from a friendly lion. Self-conciously he shut his jaws and straightened slowly, giving the older male an apologetic look.
"No thank you sir," he said distinctly, the words carefully phrased and enunciated like his mother had sternly taught him before her rites. He paused for a moment, glanced back over his shoulder the way he'd come, then laughed aloud. "And I'm not lost! How could I get lost in a small place like this?" For as big as everything seemed, his mother and he had covered so much ground and passed through so much territory, the very idea of getting lost in the pride's lands was ludicrous. A sudden widening of his eyes showed he'd spoken too quicly and had forgotten his manners. "Sir," he tacked on the end of it belatedly, looking guilty.

Syr The giant of a lion chuckled. he remembered being young and adventurous. of course his father and brother had encouraged him to come out to the borders with them and because of that he had always known he would be a guard, but looking at this little juvenile, well he couldn't help but smile. he had never been so small. he did recognise the youngster as one of the new additions to the pride though so he lay down slowly, wrapping his tail around his ankles and giving the youngster an appreciative smile. "It's a very big place when you are so small." he smiles a friendly smile, though his teeth did not flash between his lips "I'm Poseidon, though most just call me Po. I'm a border patrol guard." He smiles gently considering what he was going to say next. "Yar lady I be recognising' ya. You be common' in with the new party hmm? Does your ma know you have wondered so far form the Pomithi? You know, they aint safe lands they be dangerous fer youngsters." He lifts a paw and brushes a tuft of his thick curly mane from his eyes. "Do you wanna walk a spell with me lad? You really shouldn't be out alone, even in the jungle. Your ma has told you to keep clear of tha sea hasn't she?" He asks, he felt like he sounded like his father, telling a cub what to do, but he had a great respect for the lands he lived in. Tale Ur coudn't help it. The more the older lion talked, the higher his indignantion rose. Why, he was right between the river and the beach where they had been told many dens were! And it wasn't as if he'd do something stupid and wander off into something that would hurt him! He bristled visibly. "I am not a cub!" he protested. This older lion seemed intent on treating him like one. "Of course my mum knows that I am exploring! You don't think I'm stupid enough to go off on my own after all she's done to protect me, do you?" His little jaw jutted out aggressively and his tail was nearly stiff with righteous outrage. "Our den is that direction towards the river," he turned his head to indicate, "and the beach is thataway," again a nose pointed, "and that is the direction I won't go because the roguelands are that way!" He glared down from his perch at the reclining adult. "I also am not such a cub that I'd blunder into the living, moving water either," he concluded stubbornly, his outrage simmering down to resentment. he flexed his small claws into the root's bark. All thought about his mother's lessons on respect and politeness to pridal lions was momentarily forgotten. He did not at all want to do anywhere with this elder lion if he was going to insist on treating him like a baby! Syr The large black and white lion smiled as he listened to the young male speak and more to the point bristle. Poor young creature, he hadn't meant to upset the juvenile. His smile stretched his maw and he laughed "Settle ya self laddy, I ain't chastising' ya." he chuckles. "I was just asking if ya knew, yanno thar be all sorts stories about these ere waters. Yanno sea monsters and tha like and I seen a few eels that could eat someone my size never mind yours, I just be a looking' out for ya lad." He winks a golden eye and stretches out his dark paws. "C'mon lad, Ah'll walk your back, your don't wanna be in tha jungle during' this time 'o day, baboons are a common'." He states stretching out his extra large frame, he yawns a bit and stands waiting for the young male. "Ya thinking' o becoming a guard when ya older lad? T'aint no better job than guardian' tha borders."

Uncharacteristically stubborn and willful, at first Ur merely glared at the big male. He distinctly felt mollycoddled, and he didn't like it. He'd come too far to be treated like... like a cub! But sense prevailed, and he had to admit to himself that he did not know the dangers of the area just yet. They'd never travelled near the sea before, so didn't know its denizens at all, nor what lurked on the shoreline. His brows drew close as he puzzled. "What's an eel?" he asked, jumping down from his perch to follow the large lion.
He at least knew what babboons were, though he hadn't seen one himself. There were all sorts of monkey-kin around, so he had a hard time worrying over one kind more than another. Most were smaller than him, and generally were easily scared away. However, he had heard babboons could be quite fierce, so he gave in to the older lion's superior knowledge.
He drew up next to the big, mostly black male and gazed up at him, mulling over the odd way he spoke. Sometimes Ur had to really think about it to work out what he'd said. Finally he nodded. "I think so. What is it like, being a guard?" He still felt ruffled about being treated like such a baby, but he might as well make the best of the situation presented him. If this was a guard, he could give firsthand knowledge of the experience of the job.
