Damon had hit a rare spot of luck lately.
Ever since he had been nudged by his counselor to play a bit of basketball with the other Sovereign Heights boys, it had seemed as though one of them had mentioned him to their basketball coach. The next day, Damon Amary had been summoned into a teacher's office, looking peculiarly bewildered and wondering if he was being framed by someone else's actions; as far as he could remember, he hadn't gotten into any fights lately. He was asked to join the team, and it was after a while when he hesitantly agreed, although he was still wary.
He always seemed to be pretty wary. Even when his teammates talked to him, he would regard them with a cold stare before replying. It wasn't exactly easy to warm up when he constantly reminded himself of why he had been sent to Hillworth. Every day, Damon would wonder if the coach would ask him to stay back after practice and tell him that he knew, and that he would never play basketball again.
This practice wasn't it, however. After coach had announced that practice was over and told them to hit the showers, Damon watched the coach's retreating back until he left the gym. When he emerged from the showers, most of the boys had left and the gym was empty, save for a stray ball forgotten to be kept. Damon sighed and picked it up, intending to return it to the storeroom.
He passed by the hoops, then paused, glancing back up at the looming platform above him. It wouldn't hurt to shoot a few hoops. It was simple, and didn't require much thinking, and Damon was so focused on this that he wouldn't have noticed anyone coming in, or that if anyone was still in the bleachers watching.

Olivia was a patient one. She had a very good idea about how practice ran, as it was simple enough to ask questions here and there with classmates. She waited patiently as some of the other baksetballers left, ignoring them as they had glanced with questioning eyes. She had a little square-shaped bundle, carefully chosen blue fabric wrapped around it as a surprise. The smell of cookies couldn't be hidden, though, and she only hoped that none of them would come back asking for one. They were for only one person, and he should be alone now...
She peeked into the gym, daring a look. She saw his back turned to her, but couldn't resist pulling back. The butterflies were fluttering in her stomach now. There was no going back, she had to do this. She had failed to a couple times before, and Livy wasn't the type to completely give up. Just give her a little breathing room.
"Okay, you can do this!" She clung onto the sides of the bundle as if it would save her life, and she slipped into the gym. Livy made a beeline for the bleachers, and planted herself on them, her uniform rustling softly as she made herself comfortable. She set the Pyrex tray down, lightly muffled by the fabric surrounding it. She had to watch, just for a minute. It seemed to make the moment that much more dreamy.

It was a process of throwing the ball, the ball going through the hoop, him running after it and getting it, then repeating the same actions over and over again. It was somewhat calming to Damon, like how running was. Come to think of it, that brought up another problem. After leaving Meadowview, Damon had switched from basketball to running track and had always gone on this path, even when he got into Sovereign Heights.
Being on the basketball team meant quitting track. He was told to go for what he wanted, but a part of Damon was still unsure.
Thinking about this made him momentarily distracted, and the basketball bounced off the backboard instead of going through the hoop. Damon shook his head, snapping himself out of it, and turned to get the ball...
And was momentarily surprised to see a brown-haired girl sitting in the bleachers. Damon fixed her with a peculiar stare as he approached her, scooping the ball up into his hands. He had seen her in the hallways before, and maybe they had shared a class or two together? "Uh... you waiting for someone? Cause, the rest all left."

Oh! Oh no, oh no. She hadn't actually thought about how it was going to go when they first started talking. She had always imagined his reaction to her gift, but not how she would go abour presenting it to him. She felt herself gasp, her hands flying up to her mouth. "O-oh," she stumbled, her words jumbled in her mind. "No, I wasn't waiting for any of them...." Her hands settled in her lap, fingers fidgeting with the bottom corner of her jacket.
"I was actually waiting for you, but I didn't want to interrupt you. You seemed quite content just shooting baskets. I'm sorry Damon, I should have asked before sitting here."
Her hands went to the bundle next to her. "I was just...um...wondering if you'd like some cookies I made." Oooh, this wasn't going right at all. She should have planned this better, but hopefully not all was lost. Livy wouldn't let all of this go to waste.

Not waiting for any of them? Damon looked puzzled; it didn't seem to cross his mind that she was waiting for him. He might be pretty good at sports, but he was rather slow regarding girls. Damon had always thought they wouldn't be interested in someone like him who had come out of Hillworth.
Then she said she had been waiting for him and he was even more bewildered than before. "Oh." He muttered, eyes flickering between the basketball in his hands and the girl. "You don't have to apologize."
It was a terribly awkward situation, and it took Damon a while to take a deep breath and answer her. "Uh... sure. I could... use a rest anyway." He went up to the bleachers where she was and before he sat, mopped the sweat off his brow with the towel around his neck. "It's... Olivia, right?" Her hairstyle was pretty unforgettable.

Awkward wasn't really the word Olivia would use to describe the situation. More like terrifying, or horrible, or...
She felt a little petrified when he walked towards her. Like, omg this is actually happening so don't stop now! She fumbled a bit, feeling nervous and pressured with him so close. Really, she should stop acting so childish, but as this was really the first time she had acted so bravely in offering something to someone she liked outside of a classroom setting, Livy was just grateful that the plate hadn't been dropped yet.
"Yes," she replied with a nervous laugh, her cheeks flushing slightly at the knowledge that he knew her name. Better than feeling like a complete stranger. She shifted to her side, pulling the platter from its hiding place. They were merely chocolate chip cookies, with a few sugar ones in between. She didn't expect him to take them all, but she hoped that he'd at least try one.

He smiled, glad and relieved that he had gotten the name right. It certainly would be awkward if he hadn't; girls were sensitive about these things, right? Plus, Delphine would probably laugh at him if she had somehow managed to find out. Well... It just wasn't very polite. "They uh... look good." He remarked, shifting the topic and his thoughts towards the cookies. Why had she offered them to him though? Perhaps she had been offering them to everyone else too? That sounded logical to him, since Olivia seemed like a really nice girl.
And Damon couldn't very well turn down a nice girl, because if not, he would have to deal with tears, right? Or really, he found it hard to turn down girls, like in the case of his sister. Even if he did, Delphine complained and most of the time, still managed to get him to let her have her way. He reached over and took a chocolate chip cookie, munching. It took a while before Olivia got a reaction; after he swallowed down a bite and turned to her, a genuine grin spreading on his face. "These are really good! I mean, man, I don't know how to bake or how some ingredients work together and stuff, but it tastes really nice."

She waited patiently with just a small smile on her face. She felt enough pressure on herself, from herself, that she didn't want to put the pressure on him to claim that he liked them. She knew she wasn't a terrible baker, but she wasn't amazing. Yet. She hadn't quite figured out that 'knack' that some seemed to have naturally.
Olivia brightened up at how he really did seem to like them, though. She let go of a breath that she didn't realize she had held in. "Oooh, good!" Livy fidgeted with her fingers in her lap. She was starting to relax, but she wasn't quite good at sitting still. "I was practicing, and well...just wanted to offer a few to you." And hopefully that wouldn't sound too creepy. "Thank you Damon...for liking them," she added on quietly.

Damon shrugged, taking another bite to finish the cookie he was holding. "Well, I don't really cook. My mom would probably think that I was trying to burn down the kitchen even if I tried." Then again, his mother observed everything he did with such a critical eye. The other day, he had caught her staring at him furiously and it took him a few minutes to realize that it was because of his feet propped up on the table.
"Thanks for offering them to me." It was still a mystery to him why she had, but his mind agreed that it was probably that she needed testers. If it had been Delphine offering these, people would probably run away in fear. "Delphine should totally learn how to bake though." He muttered, his gaze darting towards Olivia as he realized that he had spoken that out loud. "Uh, I mean, my sister." Damon clarified with an awkward grin. "She goes to Crystal. A bit of a handful to keep up with, really."

Livy couldn't help herself. She laughed for a moment before remembering just who she was sitting next to. Eee!
"I think I remember her," she finally said after calming herself down. "I graduated from there before coming here. She's ah..." Livy tried to think of a good word, but nothing was really coming. "Well, she certainly sticks out in my mind." Hopefully Damon wouldn't be too upset, if he was going to be at all.
"Do you um...want to take the rest of them home? I live alone, so I don't think I would be able to eat all of them."

"Delphine leaves quite an impression, yeah." Damon said dryly. He knew the personality his sister had, of course, and in some ways, she resembled him, being quite... forceful. For a girl, he highly disapproved of it, but at least she had enough brains to keep herself from being suspended from Crystal Academy. "I keep telling her to make more friends, but she just scowls at me. Perhaps someone like you would make a good influence on her, but her choice in friends are rather... well..." He shrugged, grimacing slightly. Really, he wasn't sure if he wanted to introduce Olivia to Delphine in case his sister decided to do something mean to scare her off.
"Uh... sure, wait. You live alone? A girl like you? Isn't... that dangerous?" He crossed his arms, looking absolutely dumbfounded. Girls should never live alone, although he suspected that Delphine would love to move out after graduating from Crystal with the express intention of giving him a heart attack.

Olivia smiled. "Well, sometimes you don't know who a good friend is until you try." She had gone though a couple of those, but that was just part of growing up. Part of her thought that that was the most important part of school. Finding friends.
She was a bit curious about what he meant about being a good influence on Delphine, if only because she wondered if she could be one. If...so many ifs. She was going to offer attempting something until he seemed to have caught on to what she had said earlier.
She felt her heart race, as it had startled her. Was it really that uncommon? She didn't think so, but with Damon's reaction, maybe it was. "Yes, in an apartment complex," she clarified, her words a little weaker than they were just a moment ago. "I-I've been thinking about getting a dog or something, but I'm not really all that great with animals yet." She fiddled with the button on her jacket.

He was silent, contemplating her words. It was true, wasn't it? Delphine never really tried, never really bothered. And he himself? Hah, he didn't really have much friends either, although there were some who did stick by him even though he was going through his first year in Hillworth. But there were also many who put a distance in between them and himself, and neither he or them tried to close it.
"Dogs aren't bad." Damon replied, an image of Belle curled up at his feet popping into his mind. "I just got one recently; a goldendoodle, and she's really friendly. Maybe I could bring her to see you one day? I mean, animals are just kind of like people... you just have to show them concern to gain their trust." Of course, there were some dogs that were too trusting, and thankfully, as outgoing as Belle seemed to be, there were some people she would growl at. Like Gregory Acker, the boy who had cheated and gotten him into Hillworth. He took a deep breath, clearing the slight anger that rose in him at the thought. "If you do want to get a dog, perhaps you could ask me along. To help. Or something."

Livy felt her body warm, and tingle all over. It was nerves, and excitement, and surprise, and just...so much stuff! She gave herself a moment to catch her breath before speaking. No use in losing herself now!
"I'd love that!" She hadn't really expected anything like that. "Um, I mean, it would really give me some great first hand experience." She smiled, fiddling with the pyrex pan that still held the remaining cookies. She felt a little embarassed that she had pushed them on him, but...so much had happened in just a short amount of time. It made her grateful that for once she pushed herself to do something.
"Um, maybe we'll start with meeting your dog? So I can see if I'm...really ready for that kind of commitment." Not that meeting a dog once would decided that, but it would be a lot of help to hear from someone who was raising a dog!
"Well, I don't want you to forget your cookies," she added on awkwardly. "Should I wait for you if you, um, need to change?"

"Good." He said casually, with a half grin. "Belle likes company." It would be nice for her to get some affection from someone nice, because unfortunately, Delphine wasn't really that fond of the dog. Dogs got bored too, didn't they? Even if he did take her out for daily walks, sometimes, he neglected her while aggravating himself over undone homework. And there was practice now...
His mother had pointed out to him that it was hard to try to be responsible for a pet. He made a mental note to tell Olivia to think very seriously whether she could take care of one... although he was doing pretty okay despite having Belle shoved onto him, wasn't he?
"It's okay." Damon assured, hefting up his bag onto his shoulders. He had hit the showers before meeting her, after all. "Do you need me to walk you back?"
