It was an average early summer day when an odd pair arrived via river to the the Lake. An elegant mersoquilli looked around a tired smile on her face while her companion, a feisty otter peaked above the surface of the tranquil waters. Cade Milotic was content to drift along with slight strokes of her faned tail. It was all so familiar and yet a bit different. She'd take a look around later for now it had been a long journey and she wanted to rest. There were some nice spots on the bottom of the lake where the plants grew thickly making them the perfect spots to hide out and rest. She was sure she'd find one, though the seathi population seemed to have grown. "Perhaps I'll be able to really get to know some of them this time," she said turning to look at her otter friend.

Travis, the otter, was thrilled to be back at the Lake. Though he enjoyed the traveling and spending time in the ocean, he really thought of the Lake as home. Deep down he thought Cade felt the same. but the unusual soquili always seemed to be searching for something and thus they eventually would drift back down river to the sea again. It certainly kept life interesting. After his quick look around he dove back down to Cade. She was drifted deeper, probably wanting a rest. When she turned to speak to him, he was confused wonder what "them" she was referring to, then it came to him. "Oh you mean the seathi? Most of them seem awfully shy. But time will tell. After all who wouldn't want to get to know you Cade?"

Cade laughed, "Thanks Travis," she replied grinning at his tease. The mare did have occassional bouts of vanity. "I'm for a nice nap after the journey. I'm sure you want to take a look around and get reaquainted with the place?"

"Of course," the otter replied. "Have a good rest and I can tell you all about it when you wake." Travis stuck around long enough to see Cade settled before swimming back to the surface. He settled onto his back and groomed his thick fur all the time looking around the lakeshore. "Hmm what to do first," he mumbled to himself. A ripple in to surface as a fish snatched a bug brought a gleam to his eye. "Yes I think some fishing is in order!" he said happily and dove down to begin some fish chasing. With all the noise he was making chasing was all he would be doing for some time.

Amitola yawned, waking up as the sun shined down through the hole in her cave's ceiling. She was blinded a little by things glittering on the walls around her, but she knew her way around her childhood home well enough to get out of the inner cave without running into anything.

As she made her way to the entrance, she gave herself a look in her sea-glass mirror. Grimacing, she shook her head, trying to get her neck fin to stand up straight. When it insisted on staying bent in the middle, she sighed and left it. There was no one around to see it, anyway. The lake was incredibly empty these days, with her family gone. Ami decided that, once again, lurking the day away would just have to do.

Hovering in the corner by her cave's opening, she watched when the huge water creature and its furred friend swam in. Her eyes widened to what seemed like an impossible size, and her neck fin decided it was time to stand straight up. That... that was a monstrous seathi. And its tail was all wrong. She shrank further into the shadows, breathing shallowly.

The creature settled on the bottom of the lake, and seemed to go to sleep. Amitola watched it for a while, forgetting completely about the furred... thing.

When it didn't move for a while, Ami swam slowly closer. Nearly halfway there... And then the furry thing swam right next to her, chasing a fish. She emitted a squeak and hid behind a stand of lakeweed. Don't notice me, don't notice me, don't notice me... Her parents might have raised her to be adaptable, but she'd never seen either of these things before.

Travis was all set to enjoy a game of fish chase when he heard something much like a startled squeak. What could possibly make that noise? In the swift way of otters to change direction he twisted about in time to see a flash of impossibly bright color before it disappeared among some lakeweed. With slight flips of his webbed feet he slowly approached the spot. "Hello?" he called out curiously. "I know you're not a fish, never seen a lake fish so bright."

It never entered his mind that the situation might be dangerous, approaching some unknown creature within hours of returning to a changed territory. After all the creature had squeaked when startled... maybe it was just shy...

He continued to talk, not certain if the creature would or could reply. "My name's Travis. I just got back from the ocean. I like it here, have you been here long?" The otter knew he was babbling but he tried to keep it gently coaxing and reasuring though his body shivered with pent up excitement, and the growing need to surface for air.

Ami hid in the weeds, not breathing. She peeked around them, scared beyond anything she'd ever been scared of before. The thing was approaching her - she could see the light shining through its webbed paws...

She closed her eyes. Don't hurt me, don't see me, don't hurt me or see me...

It talked. And it was friendly-sounding. Her eyes flashed open and she stuck her head through the curtain of lake plants in front of her. "What are you?" she whispered fearfully. It might sound friendly, but there was always a chance... "And what is that?" she asked, jerking her head in the direction of the bigger thing. "It's huge. You're not here looking for food... are you?" Her eyes darted around, looking for an escape route should she need one.

Travis backed up in amazement as the seathi peaked out. "Oh you're a seathi! Awesome!" He restrained himself from twirling about since she seemed so nervous. He'd never had someone afraid of him before, of course in the ocean he was one of the smaller residents.

"Sorry if we scared you. I'm an otter." When he realized she was referring to Cade as "that" and "huge" he chuckled. "That is my friend Cade. She's a mersoquili. We're here because we like to travel. I do prefer the food here, fish are an easier diet than shellfish. She grazes and occassionally will take fish to add to her diet, so no worries about her either."

A slight pressure in his chest served as a warning. "If you'll excuse me a moment I need to get some air. I'd love to continue talking though. Cade has always wanted to meet a seathi, if you're interested." With a bow of his head and another murmured "excuse me," Travis returned to the surface.

I hope she doesn't swim away, Travis thought as he went through his normal breathing routine which included a bit of grooming while he floated on his back.

Ami tried not to squeak when it exclaimed. It knew what she was? Weird. She didn't no what it was - why should it know what she was? "An otter? And a mersoquili?" Amitola asked, a tiny bit excited now. She'd only heard of mers in the stories her parents had told her. "And you guys won't eat me?" she called after him as he rose to the surface.

She breathed a sigh of relief while she was gone and then let out a quiet squeal of happiness. A mersoquili! She'd always wanted to see one of those! And it was just like her parents had said - graceful and slow-looking, like it liked to relax a lot...
