We sell handmade hoagies. For three weeks we sell (biannually) door to door on set out routes, and then early on a saturday, we sit at six long tables and make fresh italian hoagies. Once we have made the sandwiches, we go and deliver them to the houses which purchased the sandwiches. Each sandwich costs four dollars a piece, and our local shoprite donates all the supplies. So essentially its a 100% profitable deal, AND the town typically makes extra donations as well. We've been doing it for decades, and the town actually looks forward to our hoagie sales.
You may or may not be able to sell hoagies, but have band students make baked goods and then sell them at town gatherings, e.g. your 4th of July parade/festivities.

I feel your pain. We were required to pay fees, but then a lawsuit from last year stopped fees (and put us in some pretty bad debt).
Here's some activities that my band and the boosters do.
* Fireworks Booth * Product sales year-round (Entertainment Books, candles, candy, etc.) * Dinner + Silent Auction * Riding around the carts at local university football games * Poker night * DCI show host * WBA competition host * Concessions for home football games * Sponsorship posters
The Jazz Band does... * LaserQuest night (SUPER fun, and rewarding! Have the BD play!) * Program sales * Jazz Festival host * CD sales (usually goes towards the next year's CD) * Coffee Sales * Gazelle electronic trade-ins * BaskinRobbins ice cream sales during spring concert
Other suggestions may be the typical car wash, bake sale stuff. Maybe sell old props or equipment that's never used (if you have any), or have a "Band Room Sale" (like a massive garage sale)? Personally, I'm collecting bottles and want to donate the recycle funds to the band. :] And I wanna get a recycle container to put in the band room and on the field, because we all know how many water bottles we go through during marching season. xD
Also, good communication is key. Even though we kinda have a variety of fundraisers, no one really ever knows about them because of terrible communication. D:

Haha my school's the same when it comes to money. You should have a drawing for pie-ing a teacher in the face! Just get some teachers that are willing to do it (especially ones that most kids hate), put cool whip over a pie plate, and charge people whatever amount you want for a ticket. Our band made a killing on it!

aww. my band only sells cheese cake, pizza, and cookies. we also have a dinner+ silent auctoin.
and the international club sold coffee, hot chocolate, and pastries.
I kind of want my band to do a contest kind of thing with the students. like an armwrestling contest or a scavenger hunt or something like that.

We have: ~Spaghetti Dinner+silent auction ~car wash ~band booth at football games ~And last year started a golf tournament.
So the band booth at football games is where the boosters sell band merchandise and other school spirit stuffs, like their infamous band parent shirts and green and gold bracelets. They also sel noisemakers and stuff like that, and water bottles.
The golf tournament was started last year, and had such a great tournout we started it again this year. We gained i think around 7K from it. A local golf course lets us come for a fairly cheap price and loans us golfcarts. i think its $25 to get in, and then buisinesses can sponsor a golf cart to advertise their business for a small fee. It racks in loads of money if you have about 35 teams of 4 and just as many sponsored golf carts.

we do pancake breakfasts which raise a good bit of money
also, if you have cici's pizza, applebee's, or chikfila in your area, you can do fundraisers there where you like walk around and refill peoples drinks/throw away their trash and you get to keep the tips and a percent of everyone's checks which is a pretty good fundraiser if you have people willing to work
car washes are usually an easy and super effective fundraiser, depending on when it's scheduled
basket/purse/whatever bingos adults really like those and they usually raise a good bit of money we use like vera bradley purses and longaberger baskets which are both pretty pricey so lots of people buy tickets
also, if your school will allow it (depending on health codes) you can do a candy sale each member gets a box of popular candy to sell (reeses, hershey, starbursts, skittles, etc) and when one box is empty you get another and another.. before my school banned candy, that was a HUGE fundraiser for our band just taking that candy box to class could get each person 5+ dollars a period every day for a few weeks
you can also sell other things like fresh fruit, candles, one year the band parents sold knives..
things like that ahaha

We did coupon books as our fundraiser. And my, it was a terrible expernience. WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD BUY A COUPON BOOK FOR ALMOST $50 WHEN THEY COULD GET ONE FOR FREE IN THE MAIL!?!?!?!
I recommend not doing coupon books, they're a waste of time. We didn't even manage to sell atleast 50, our goal.
Sorry, I'm really angry at the fact that our band director promised us plenty of fundraisers, but we only ended up with one due to his lack of interest in the sr. band.

Are there any places around that'll pay your band to do gigs or whatever? I guess that's more of a college thing, but...there are probably people who'd want a marching band to play at their restaurants, birthdays, weddings, etc.
