Resurrection Wolves Captain

The water of the Spirit River bubbled past, foaming as the sediment it had picked up along its journey was churned up by the raging eddies and currents. It emitted a dull roar which masked the squelching footprints of the wolves as they emerged out of the long grass and into the soft marshlands of the peninsula around which the river meandered. Here only the short, hardy plants could survive in the water-saturated soil, cat-tails and debris dotted the open landscape, leaving the expanse of sky uncovered entirely. The ground itself was thick and muddy, making it hard to maneuver quickly.
Here is where the second round will take place. Judging area:Res's Verdict: 1 Point for Icarus!-True growth of character into a chivalrous, honorable adult. A'cuil's posts were also very emotional, but while his held him back, Icarus' emotion propelled him onward, like a true alpha.Breaking's Verdict: Candie's Verdict: Victor: Icarus 3Final points: Winner is ICARUS!

xxxxxIcarus quietly padded to the site of meeting for the match. He breathed heavily, intensely nervous of fighting against two well-built adults ready to fight. The orange being knew he was slightly early for the battle, he had done so on purpose. Pale-blue eyes scanned his surroundings, peering at the moist mud beneath him that squelched resistant with each pad contacting the ground. Silently, he bristled as he realized the difficulty that this terrain would provide to the match. White ears flattened against his skull and a quiet whine creeped up his throat.
xxxxxThe wounds from the previous battle had healed very well due to Departed's careful cleaning and healing. Herbs and resting had done wonders for the places that had pumped out his lifeblood. A shudder coursed through his muscular frame as flashbacks of his previous match ran through his mind. The sense of defeat, the smell of blood and the harsh thud of the ground contacting his skull made his stomach tense. Thoughts of doubt and fear clawed at his insides. The young pup that had threatened his destruction a few days before was slowly claiming dominance over the adult that had sprouted and managed to crush the pup previously.
xxxxxThe empty space unnerved Icarus. Cerulean eyes flitted about the muck, searching the foliage of the nearby forest for the forms of his opponents. A low growl escaped him as he paced anxiously. Relief had flooded through him as Olek and the other judging wolves had declared him the mental victore. The match had been very close and the fact that he had been defeated did not make a strong case for him. Paranoia crawled through him. He feared bias, he feared the wolves, he definitely feared Sure-Claws. Icarus was worried about the battle and as adrenaline had not coursed through him just yet, he shivered quietly.
xxxxxThe adolescent was still unsure of his own power. He had proven his stamina in the last match, surviving much longer than he had thought possible. After much consideration upon himself, he accepted the fact of losing. The nit-picking he had done was pointless. He was both inexperienced and weaker than the wolf he had fought against. Scrunching his nose, he solidified his resolve to better his strength and gather knowledge from this battle. The fear that had him paralyzed days before was slowly ebbing away as he waited. HP: 20

Slowly she stepped out of the trees of the forest and she made her way up the mountain to the place the next battle would be held. This place... this time and place... this was the deciding battle that would shape the future of her new pack. She was willing, and she was ready. Everything in her body was eager for this fight, win or lose she would celebrate joyously for the victor.
She was completely healed from her fight with Lithium and she was ready to get some new wounds. She was excited and it showed. There was a smile on her face and joy in her heart. Nothing was holding her back anymore. She had let go of the past, she was living in the present and she looked forward to every minute of the future.
So you think that you can take me on, you must be crazy.. cuz there ain't a single thing you've done that's gonna phase me... so if you think you wanna have a go... I just wanna let you know, Get off of my back, and into my game, get out of my way, I'm wild and untamed...
The words made her grin as the song raced through her mind. It gave her a high of adrenaline and a flood of confidence that put her at ease. She reached the meeting place and saw Icarus waiting. She trotted up to him and licked his cheek. "You ready Boy? Win or lose today, you're going to do great. Good Luck." she murmured encouragingly, tail wagging.

The sound that preceded the snake-pelted wolf was a low hum, made deep in his chest and vibrating outward. The resound and ensuing chant was a battle ritual that his father had taught him, and that still served A'cuil well to this day. Rarely did he use it to focus his senses anymore, but... well. Today was a special battle. Shrumm... Shrummm... The sound rippled outward from the wolf's form, which was decidedly calmer than it had been for the last few days. His aches, pains and cuts were healing over, but had not known the touch of a medic; so they smarted still. The one in his shoulder, he would especially have to be wary of. He would probably be feeling Taki's teeth there for a full season to come.
The Sure-Claw padded out slowly, taking note of the way his paws sank into the mire. They sank, but not unbearably: the sheer width of his larger pads made walking bearable. But his trump card, the mighty leaps that had won him speed in his last match - A'cuil's ears flattened just to think of that fight - would not be available to him here. The mountain wolf believed that he'd have trouble jumping normally, much less bounding about.
His ears flicking forward, A'cuil noticed others on the battlefield. Thanks to the chattering of the wolves, he knew already who they were. On the one paw, his eyes shimmered with amusement upon seeing Fairyn - he was excited to see the way she fought. But on the other paw... A'cuil's ears stood straight up as he looked at Icarus, his expression warring between angry, and saddened. His voice was low enough to grate the mire below them when he spoke.
"Bright one, I cannot do this. The wolves mistook you."

xxxxxIcarus' shoulders and stomach clenched the moment the gray femme had entered the clearing. Once she was visible and quite happily preparing herself for the mathc, he felt a sinking feeling. A quiet yip greeted her as her moist tongue passed offer his cheek. "I think so." He said with a nervous chuckle, pale blue eyes peered at her orbs. "No hard feelings for whatever outcome, I hope." A wolfish smile of anxiety bloomed on his face as white ears flattened.
xxxxHis eyes cast down to the muck below him once more. It stained the white markings that covered him. Part of each leg was a dark brown, masking his white-tipped limbs. He shook each part lightly, hoping the restrictive mud would disappear and allow him to move. As expected, the mud did not release its grip. The shaking had only resulted in a small blob of brown dropping to the ground below with a resounding plop.
xxxxxTension grew in his small frame as the brown adult padded into the forest. Out of respect he bowed his head lightly to the older male, glimpsing the look he showed Faiyrn. As he looked up, he was shocked to see the expression of anger and sadness on his face. A low growl erupted from him as he absorbed A'cuil's voice. "Do not underestimate me, A'cuil." The growl snaked out of him with a vicious tone to it. The unapproving look he felt from those carmine eyes not only pained him, but angered him. Icarus was sick of being taken so lightly simply because of being younger. Pale-blue eyes peered at his mentor fiercely as he scrunched his nose out of distate.
xxxxxThe new-found confidence he felt from being challenged encouraged him. Icarus took a wide stance and raised his hackles. He felt the need to prove himself to the adult, to show the wolf that even though he was young, he was still strong. Cast away was the fear of challenging a Sure-Claw, no matter the stupidity behind the idea. Still, he did not charge. The adult within him advised it would be a bad idea to launch the first attack.

She noted his manner and she gave him a small smile and nuzzled his shoulder. "No hard feelings at all, no matter what." she murmured. She didn't like the feel of her paws sinking and it bugged her a bit but she made no complaint. She stood when A'cuil approached and she stepped back for a moment to let what needed to be said be said.
She sighed. She knew neither of them were going to want to do this, and truthfully, she didn't want to either. She had battled on who was younger and smaller than her already and while it did not leave a good taste in her mouth, she was glad she was the victor in that battle, if not only to go on, but to protect the other femme.
She watched Icarus grow defensive and she stepped closer once more. She could see Icarus would not make the first move, and frankly, A'cuil frightened her a little, but at the same time, the way she had been taught to fight was more defense than offense. She lifted her head, her ears stood forward, her tail brushed out and her fur stood on end. Her hackles raised and her lips pulled back into a slow, rolling growl, long and deep like the rumble of thunder.
"Good Luck A'cuil, win or lose, I have a lot of respect for you and your skills. May the best wolf win today..." the female stepped back a little and a gust of wind blew in from the river. She stood firm and her fur ruffled in the breeze. The smoke on her fur almost seemed to glow for a moment as the breeze ruffled her coat, and then the Haze took effect and she became a shimmering shadow, hard to see, but not invisible. She began to walk a slow circle around A'cuil, opposite of the side the younger was at.
She observed him, noted his injuries from previous battles and knew it would be a low blow to hit where he was hurt, but also knew that if she didn't, the match may tip in his favor. She saw the apprehension leave the younger wolf and prayed he did not get overly confident. She threw up a prayer for the weather, the river and her pack, and then she prayed for the safety of those fighting.

A'cuil stayed where he stood, tilting his head to the side at Icarus' response. Per the adolescent's temper, A'cuil did not look away from him as he began to pace. It looked like the mountain wolf's pacing was no different than a jog, assessing his opponents; but really, A'cuil was carefully testing his own maneuverability in the muck. The results displeased him. He realized that he was going to have to think outside of himself for this battle...
A'cuil looked again between Icarus and Fairyn. He was going to be to think outside of himself in more ways than one. Icarus had completely misunderstood what he had said before: he looked upon the boy as every inch a wolf. He was just not, in every inch, a grown wolf. Where he came from, it was dishonorable to pit oneself against one so young in true combat. A'cuil felt his belly twisting. Would he have time, after the fight, to redeem his honor? Would he ever be able to, if he did this?
He sighed and looked up at Icarus, one ear flicking over to Fairyn. Alas, the young who thought they knew it all. "No hard feelings," he promised the pair. And then warrior wolf stepped out of A'cuil's heart, and there was the coldest of Sure-Claw rage in his eyes. The reassuring humming stopped. "As you wish, bright one." The compassion, the grating sadness, everything that had held his voice before - all gone. "Come. Let us see your adulthood."
The warrior roared, immediately stretching his paws sideways as he launched himself at his fellow warrior first. He respected her skills as well - and so he held nothing back as he lunged for her neck.

xxxxxIcarus nodded lightly to femme beside him. It was a solid fact between the three that the outcome of this match would not hinder their relations outside. Once the pack was formed, this battle would be put behind the three and the rest. He tensed as the gray female seemed to blend into the shadows. Warmth within him sparked to ease his discomfort. Icarus knew he lacked both knowledge and experience to fight these pair, but he wouldn't be able to rest until he himself had challenged the authority. If he was to be defeated then he could be sure that the reigns of the pack would not be in doubt.
xxxxxHe peered at A'cuil as he realized the warrior's expression held more compassion and sadness than anger. Had he misunderstood? Icarus shook his head lightly. This was not a time for doubt, this was a time for focus. The drive to prove himself to the adults was pressing, it soared above all the other importances. Icarus was an adolescent slowly moving from being a younging to an adult. It wouldn't be long until he had to take a role in the pack. A spark inside his pale-blue eyes held a look of admiring at the brown wolf.
xxxxxAs the other wolves began to move, he decided it was best to begin changing his position. He took a few steps to the side, putting some distance between himself and the other wolves. To his dismay, the sucking sounds produced from the muck below him restricted his movements and distracted his ears. White-tipped ears flicked towards the pair that had begun to circle. The apprehension returned once more as he doubted his ability. Innocent eyes emerged from the focused ones for a moment as he panicked. As quickly as they had been exposed, he hid them behind narrowed ones once more.
xxxxxThe transition that A'cuil had made from almost gentle compassion to cold rage scared Icarus. He had experienced the drive of a Sure-Claw, but the orchid wolf had come at him straight on, there had been no transition. The change in his mentor's stance also worried him. However, it didn't take long for Icarus to steel his nerves and crouch low to the ground as he paced. He watched the wolf charge at Faiyrn and out of immediate response he launched an attack his own.
xxxxxHe moved through the mud and past the catails in the direction of A'cuil. Icarus felt the need to protect the femme from the warrior, he had seen part A'cuil's strength and felt that he was required to defend the gray female from the brute. Lips peeled back, he charged at the wolf, aiming for the neck with ivory fangs.

His speed was a shock to her and she didn't really realize that he had charged her until he was on top of her. She had been to curious about his shift in position and the lack of emotion to realize they were the signs that the battle was starting. So this cold viscious ferocity was what Sure-Claw warriors used in battle... She had never seen it before and it actually brought some fear to her which graced her a moment of startled clumsiness. Truthfully, when he attacked her hazy form she was rather glad, relieved almost, that he had chosen her first. Scared out of her mind for a few moment yes, but she was glad.
With her teeth bared she crouched, trying to duck, however she found herself unable to dodge or avoid his attack. She lowered her head hoping to protect her throat and at least redirect the attack to the back or side of her neck. She felt the air hit her right before he did and then she saw the flurry of orange in her peripheral and felt a sudden rush of gratitude to the younger male. Bless him, the boy was trying to protect her. Respect welled in her heart for the young male and she felt pride in his actions...
She felt a flood of adrenaline snake through her but it was not enough to get her out of A'cuil's range. He hit his mark and she swallowed the sound that threatened to escape her. She had to get her head in the game and she needed to pay more attention. She would not make the mistake again. She tried to dislodge and push him off. She scanned the area around her and tried to seek points of interest that might be of use to her, like the water or the wetter mud that would surely distract him or limit his movements.

Not all warriors did this. Not all... But A'cuil, he did.
He dug his teeth into Fairyn's neck, getting a good hold. His paws sunk deep into the soft earth under the fae's weight, giving the warrior all the more alarm to see the bright orange streak from the corner of his eye. The boy, he remembered thinking, was chivalrous, but mistaken. If Fairyn was a warrior true, she would not need his protection. Just as Taki had needed no protection.
A'cuil lowered himself as he felt Icarus approach, pushing himself and the wolf in his mouth down into the mud. The gust of air overhead told him the the launching young warrior had sailed harmlessly overhead. Letting a snarl rip from his obscured jaws, A'cuil squared his forepaws, using the suction of the mud to help him as he attempted to deadlift Fairyn, and with a twist of his neck, throw her bodily into Icarus' recovering form.

xxxxxA snarl of frustration ripped through Icarus' throat and out into the air as A'cuil skillfully thrust himself into the mud, dodging his attack. Still, Icarus realised that the way in which he had launched himself was both poor aimed and hasty. Without proper planning, all attacks on this type of terrain would be wasted. He clenched his jaw as he flew over the brown adult, soaring past the wolves below. His heart sunk for Faiyrn, who seemed caught under the wolf's heavy mass.
xxxxxHe stuck his once-white paws into the mud, trying with all his might to stop suddenly. Of course, all of his attempts were to no avail. The mud squelched as it absorbed and sent the bright orange mass skidding into the muck. Catails and other hardy plants did not slow his journey through the brown. Icarus sat up, half dazed and realizing that one entire side of his body was covered in a thick, unforgiving layer of mud. It slowed his moved and sent shivers down his spine as the thick muck slid down his legs and as moisture penetrated his fur.
xxxxxHe tried to shake off the feeling but lacked the time to do so. As soon as he had the chance to look up at his opponents, the gray female had been flung towards him. In a panic he tried to move too quickly to the side and in protest the muck sucked him back. The distance was closing very quickly. In the same second he reflexively rolled to the side, allowing the femme to land in the soft embrace of the moist ground below. The once bright orage wolf rose to his feet and growled at the wolf. Mud restricted his movement and so, he slowly walked towards the spotted wolf before him.
xxxxxAttempting to toss the femme onto him had been a cheap shot in his opinion. It angered him, the manner that A'cuil had treated Faiyrn. He knew it was stupid to protect one of his opponents, but he felt that the Sure-Claw warrior before him needed to be taken down first. His body hummed and the warmth around him rose steadily. Measured steps were taken towards the brown wolf before Icarus charged his heavy mass towards the warrior. He raised both paws in an attempt to rip at the spotted wolf's side.

Now she was irritated.
First, he pounced on her like she was a rodent! Then! He grabbed her by the neck like some puppy! He squished her into very unpleasant wet mud that made tremble as the scent brought back some unpleasant memory she didn't really recognize, probably from her puppyhood, little of which she really remembered. As if pressing her into the mud like a molding model wasn't bad enough the male had the nads to shake her around like a rag dll and then throw her like she weighed little more than a deer's leg.
She was hating every second of this fight so far as she flew through the air at the poor orange boy. She was fervently glad when he rolled away and while she was grateful for the soft place she landed in, she resented more the fact that it was again, mud. She stood and shook herself out before putting her paws on the green and crouching. She watched Icaraus attack the male and found her opinion of this match quite similar.
The larger, stronger male was the biggest threat. Survival tip said, he had to go first. She pushed off with her pack legs while flinging her front half into motion. The female was too muddy to use her own trump card, her Haze ability. She growled at the dappled male as she approached and lowering her head she aimed for his other side and made an attempt to head but him in the shoulder or rib cage area. She let loose an angry snarl and hoped against hope one of their attacks, if not both, hit.

The mud would not allow him to avoid their attacks at a bound, the warrior knew. So in avoiding one attack - he twisted swiftly to the side, leaving empty space where the fae might before have struck - he moved into the other. Icarus' strike jarred heavily into A'cuil's shoulder - though, he noted, did not tear. Their paws must have been too mud-encrusted for claws to impact!
Still, there was no mud in A'cuil's mouth. As he came near, the wolf lunged out again with those crushing jaws.
