In the distance there is a field, and beyond that field, lies a lake, from far away it almost blends in with the meadow because the tall grass growing out of it fools the casual passerby into thinking it to be more meadow. But get closer and you'll see the clear blue water beyond.

Look even closer and you'll see a small blue herla; standing in the water; her head close to it's surface; a focused look on her face. Her tail up in air; her ears flat against her head. What ever she's looking at has seriously caught her attention. Or maybe she's doing something that requires focus? Who knows. No one but the deer herself.

Snow stood in the water; up to her knees; her hair touching it's surface but just barely. She was standing so still the water had stopped rippling. But underneath it; was a whole slew of activity. She smiled to herself; a small smile. She was freezing the water. Trying her hardest to focus her body temperature. Wanting to make something pretty; and show it to her mom.

Right now; she was making her favorite thing. Roses. They were so simple; and yet so complex. They were so beautiful; and yet they could protect themselves. They were left alone; but everyone wanted one...

Sometimes Snow wished she was a Rose. She wanted people to look at her. But she wanted to be left alone. She shook her head at the contradictory statement. She was just being silly. She wanted to have her cake; and eat it too. But she knew she wasn't as pretty as her sister Chalice. And she definitely wasn't as unique as Omnitia. She was just sort of plain. She didn't have any antlers like her parent's; or her sisters'.

But that was ok. She was happy with the way she looked. Cause it meant that who ever loved her; would love her for her. She wiggled her tail at that. before realizing she'd disturbed the water that way. D8

Chanda lifted her head to the breeze, her mane fluttering around her eyes. For a while the hind had been keeping an eye over her niece, watching from a perfect distance. She was such a wonder.. The little herla, family.. Something that she wanted and needed to protect. The pale hind flicked her tail ever slightly. What would things have been like if she had never come here? What would they have been if she had never found her family? her father's battalion had been a good family. Very rough. Very harsh. Very forgiving. Very.. Loving. She had a hundred fathers and brothers, and each had consoled and raised her when her father died in the Dead City. Still, the day had came for each to go back to their family, and her family had come to an end. ...She might go back.. Try to find them again... Some day. For now, she had things that needed protecting. She had little ones that needed a battalion, and so a battalion she would be.

Snow.. She was a wonder in Chanda's eyes. A tiny little thing that she hardly knew but loved so much. The foal was her niece, and while Chanda had yet to know what a mother's love felt like, she was learning to be an Aunt. There was a fondness in the hind's face as she watched the yearling concentrate and strain. Her little attention span seemed to be pushed to the max..

Chanda would never be sure when her hooves had started moving, but soon she found herself just behind the foal. Her steps had been quiet, as she had been taught. Loud trouncing through any place called attention, more likely than not, the kind that went unwanted.

The hind folded her legs beneath her, resting just at the water's edge. She had little care for water, at least when she wore Father's armor. The chest plate and shoulder guards had never seen rust in her care, and she would be damned before they did... She watched as Snow scrutinized the water's surface, and could hardly help as a slight laugh escaped her. The little thing seemed so focused, so intent.. It would be a wonder if she ever noticed her aunt watching, even so close.

Snow had in fact; been unaware of her Aunts presence; until Chanda let out a laugh and Snow flipped out. Rearing on her back legs and twisting to see who it was; her eyes wide with surprise as she fell back into the water with a big splash.

The water froze around her in matter of a minute and she was encased in it. If Snow had been a bit more of a relaxed herla; instead of always nervous; she probably wouldn't have freaked out as much as she had; but she did and she couldn't help it. She called out in a scared tone for her aunt.

She looked up as the water swirled around her again before realizing she'd only frozen the top layer of the water; and that if she moved over a bit... she'd be out of it. Feeling a fool; she did so and stuck her soaking wet head out of the water to look at her aunt.

A small frown on her face from the embarrassment she felt in that moment.

Chanda flew to her feet as the yearling reared, a fit of panic running through her as the water froze. With a twist of the neck, she dashed away the ice, antlers crushing the layer as the terrified hind searched the waters... Only to find the yearling not but three feet away, and perfectly fine.

The hind took in a deep breath, releasing it in a slow stream. Her eyebrows arched in an apologetic tone, a slight laugh to her words. "Sorry about that Little one.. Didn't mean to scare you." ..In all truth, Chanda hardly doubted that of the two, she had been more terrified that the foal in the end. Another few steps and the herla was back to the water's edge, taking her teeth to the odd buckle that held on her father's armor. The metal piece fell heavily to the ground. The harts in the battalion had always said it would be too heavy for her. It was a man's armor, not a yearling's, not a woman's. But perhaps those hard years in the city had been far worth it, she now carried her father's armor with ease, as if it were nothing more than a shawl over her shoulders.

In an almost catlike manner, she rubbed away the water, soaking it into the heavy coat along her neck. This armor had never seen a speck of rust, and she wasn't going to be the one to change that.

All thoughts of making things into pretty ice sculptures left Snows mind as she shook out the top part of her body; getting any loose water out of her fur. She could always get the rest off later; but for now; she looked at the shiny metal armor that her aunt had taken off. When she was a fawn; she'd thought that it was a part of her body. Just as she'd thought her father didn't have any eyes becuase she'd never seen them. But now; she knew better.

She walked up to her out of the water; but still keeping a small distance. It looked like Aunty Chanda was trying to wipe it off and make it dry; she didn't want to get it wet on accident.

"Aunty Chanda~" She called curiously; almost nervously; as if she shouldn't be asking this in the first place. Since neither her mom nor her Aunt ever talked about her armor. "Why do you wear that?"

It was an innocent question. And she was curious. She'd wondered if Chalice had asked it before. She was so smart about stuff; so was Omnitia. They probably didn't need to ask. But snow... she felt like the dumb one of the group. She had to ask to learn.

Chanda paused, looking down at the armor rather than her niece. Such a simple question had such a hard answer. The hind nosed off little shines of water, reminding herself that it needed a good cleaning later... "This.. it protects me, and teaches me." She looked to the young hind, a smile in her eyes tinged by a very old sadness. "Its strength keeps me safe, and its weight makes my muscles strong and quick." Chanda gave a sigh, a motion reflecting the drawn out answer. "...It was your grandfather's." If nothing else the hind was glad. In this little way, Snow could know her grandfather.. After all, she had many stories to tell about the crazy old man..

Snow wondered how something like a peice of metal could teach her grown up Aunt anything. She wondered if it was one of those things adult talked about; that made more sense to them; then it did to a yearling or a fawn.

When she said it belonged to her granddaddy she looked up with an interested smile. "really? Does mom know that? 8D" She wriggled her tail and a few more loose drops of water flew from her pelt. She made sure not to get any more of it on her Aunts armor though...

"What was he like?" She asked a curious shine to her eyes. Mom never talked about her daddy. She always seemed kind of sad when she thought about any of her family; even Aunty Chanda. She wondered if something really bad had happened to them.

Chanda smiled. It was.. nice to see such curiosity. Her father's death had been a hard thing to bear, something difficult in all respects.. But It had been after that that the battalion had almost rallied around the foal. She would never realize it, but the yearling had been something good for those of the battalion to focus on. She had reminded them of the good that they were there to protect, and the beloved things that they had left behind. Perhaps that was why she had gained so many brothers, so many fathers.

"I don't know if your momma remembers.. But she probably does." Then the question..What was he like? Chanda closed her eyes, memory building her father back up, what he looked like, how he smelled, how he moved.. "...He was a very good hart. Very strong and very kind.." An unexpected laugh came from her, "..And he loved to tell the worst jokes.."

Snow took note of the smile on her Aunt's face; and she relaxed a bit; happy to see she hadn't gotten upset like her mom would. Mom only sort of remembered him Snow thought; sort of like he was a wisp of a memory or something. Or maybe it was just becuase her mom didn't like to talk about it... Either way. It was cool to hear about someone she was related to.

She nodded her head as she listened to the vague description of her grandfather. Mom would get sad when she thought of her father; and angry when she thought of daddy's dad... She'd always thought she was lucky; to think of her dad; and not be sad or angry with him. She loved her daddy <3

Her ears perked when she listened to her Aunt laugh; and she in turn smiled and laughed lightly too. "Is that where mom gets her bad jokes from too?"

Chanda smiled, "Probably.." The hind stood, hoisting the armor to her back with ease, and buckling the straps back in their respective places. "...I'll have to tell you some stories about him.. But for now, I think I'd like to know what you were doing in the water.." She gave a mixed half headbutt, half gentle nuzzle to the yearling's shoulder. As always, her form was cool to the touch, a pleasant change from the warmth of the day.
Just like Air conditioning...Ahhhh...Chanda had long learned to pay no attention to some of the nonsensical things her guardian mentioned.. But it was rather pleasant.

Snow had almost forgotten about what she'd been doing in the water; and when her aunt asked her what she had been doing it all came back to her in a rush and she smiled widely. "I was practicing freezing things!" She told her proudly. She moved back into the water and started staring at it again; focusing on her hoof mainly. "Here! Look!"

She started to move her hoof in the water; focusing hard on the image of a daisy. That would be easier to bring up for her aunt to see. A rose was always so fragile when she made it. When she was done freezing the water she lowered her head and stuck it into the now extremely cold water. Grabbing a hold of it with her mouth and pulling it up to show her aunt proudly. The stem held firmly in her mouth. The ice not bothering her teeth in the slightest.

"seeee?" She mumbled around the stem. Her little tail wiggling happily.

Chanda stared at the icy flower, stunned. It wasn't perfect per say, after all, the yearling was still very young.. But just the idea.. "It's beautiful Snow.. How.." The hind stopped herself, turning a smile to her niece. "That's quite a little power you've got there." She stretched her neck, touching the yearling's nose with her own. "I'm very proud of you snow."

She looked to the water, wondering exactly how her niece could have done such a thing... but this defied logic. The hind had heard of others having odd talents, but this certainly must have topped things..

Snow shrugged her shoulders even though she was very proud of herself for having been able to make a flower like that. She let it drop back into the water where it started to melt becuase that's all that would happen as soon as Snow let it go. "I dunno~ I'm just always really cold! And sometimes when I walk into water; it freezes... so I started to try and make it freeze on purpose... the first thing I ever made was a really weird lopsided ball."

She admitted shyly; pawing a circle in the water at the memory. She'd been trying to make an eye to give to Calix and it had come out all wrong.

When her aunt nosed her and told her she was proud of her she smiled an puffed up her chest subconciously. "Naaah~ It's nothin' that big." She giggled. "Omnitia and Chalice are much better then I am."

Chanda shook her head, expression turning solemn and almost sad. "Never say that again Snow." The hind's voice had turned firm as she stood, giving the yearling an almost cold stare. How could this little yearling think so little of herself? She brought light to everyone around her. She made beautiful things..

"...You.. Snow, never discount yourself. You are a beautiful young hind, smart and.. and you've got one of the best hearts I have seen in a very long time." The kind words did not come easy. Rough was a think that described Chanda. Cold was a thing that described Chanda. These words seemed so alien. The action behind them, strong and true as it was, was something so unidentifiable. "You are equal to your sisters. You have your own strength and a light that warms hearts just as much as you might chill the water." The hind stretched out her neck, and nuzzled the yearling's cheek. "...Don't ever think you aren't as good as anyone else. When you do that, you betray everyone who loves you so much.."

Snow nodded her head firmly when her aunt told her those words. That she was good and stuff. She didn't think she was smart... she thought that Omnitia and Chalice were much smarter then her. But she didn't question it. She didn't like fighting with adults... Calix didn't count.

She smiled and nuzzled against her aunt's neck and cheek too when she nuzzled her. She liked getting that kind of love from her family. It was nice.

She wondered why Calix was so opposed to it. But what ever. When she said that she betrayed those around her by not thinking she was good enough; she gave a small sound. Her eyes going slightly wide. "I won't ever think anything bad about myself ever again Aunty Chanda I promise!"
